There was a dangerous point in my bartending career...

I worked at a fancy restaurant, and they bought a super fancy (like $35k) automatic espresso machine, that ground the beans to order and everything, with a touch screen.

I accidentally discovered that, if I got a little grease on my finger before telling it to make me a double shot, after it poured one, it would think my finger was still on the button, and immediately start pouring another.

So I would make a pint of espresso each evening for espresso martini, and then a quart for myself.

Wait, how's that different from just making yourself 2 double shots?

[–] axexrx@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

A quart would be 16 2oz double shots.

Oh, shit, yeah, that's different. But I meant, how does the machine thinking you were still pressing it make a difference?

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Peobably due to the grease and the capacitive touchscreen.

No, I get that. I'm asking why was it needed for the machine to serve two espressos "by mistake". Why not just grab yourself/themselves another one?

As I understood it would make not just 2 double shots but several before you wipe off the grease, possibly making OP go "hmmmm, yes, 16 double shots, I'll drink it now" and then developing a liking for this activity

Yeah, and it was 24. (16 for me, 8 for par for the bar for cocktails which was my excuse for running so many)

So at ~2 mins a pour, were talking just under an hour of otherwise having to stand there and press a button every 2 minutes.

This way I could set the machine up, walk away and go do my prep to set up the bar come back every 20 mins or so to decent some from the quart container.

Ah, that makes sense! Thanks.

Pro tip: if that's also your reaction every time you see a coworker looking tired, saying so might not be a boon to your continued employment 🤔

[–] stevedice@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Equating "looking tired" with "has had 12 coffees and a soda that also has caffeine in it" is wild.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I meant that saying "just do cocaine" to every tired looking coworker is probably inadvisable.

Depends on the industry.

Restaurant worker: "I can't until I see my guy after work, coffee will have to do for now."

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Depends on the industry.

You're absolutely right, I didn't consider that.

Certain parts of the music industry, and politics too.

Not just music and politics, it's big into blue collar now too. Carpentry and building (non-union stuff like mansions), I know a lot of groomers (people who groom ski trails) on coke. Really any job that benefits from you working long hours. Sometimes it's worth it for the overtime, or if you own the business then finishing the contract fast may have a bonus.

Sure, but nobody said to do that, so the comment is a bit irrelevant, innit?

It was a hypothetical thought up for laughs 🤷🏻
