It's sickening how the far right agenda has been so normalised that the government is pandering to them.
Since when was displaying our national flag "far right"? Ah yes, Hitler was as bad as some bloke flying the Union Flag.
It's a flag usually assosciated with racist nutjobs. Doesnt have to be, granted, but the usual way of showing national pride and unity is to use the Union Jack.
Replacing the Jack with the England flag telegraphs that unity is not the goal.
Why do Wales and Scotland get to fly their flags then? Because these were countries that England oppressed and occupied. The use of their national flags do of course have racist undertones (usually aimed at the english), but it's a way of preserving their heritage under a foreign occupier and so we grant them this clemency.
England flying their flag for the same reason does not hold the same merit, unless we're literally expressing our heritage that was taken away from us... by us. We were a worldwide occupying force for a long time. Maybe we should calm down on the pride, and instead fly the Jack that promotes more unity
Scotlandโs not fucking oppressed and occupied. Their nobility bankrupted themselves investing in the doomed Darien project, so they formed the union with England and then went out again doing colonialism properly under the banner of the East India Company and British Empire. They just hate it now because the Empire money is gone and Westminster and London has all the power, which is just the same boat everyone else is in.
LOL no. The act of Union between England and Scotland was very much consensual and the English didn't oppress the Scottish.
Wales was not a country until recent times. It was only internationally defined as such in 2011. It was always a principality of England.
Then take it back. Fly it at pride parades, palestine rallies, other protests. It's everyone's flag.
I think people generally fly both. Although I'm not living in England. But when I visited England, I rarely saw St George's cross by itself. I don't think at all, except on a Church of England church (Anglican churches in the UK tend to fly their saints flags anyway, like the Church of Ireland typically flies St Patrick's Saltire or the Union Jack)
The wars of scottish independence are pretty entrenched in cultural psyche, and Thatcher reignited tensions drastically in the 80s.
They were not allowed to express their culture until the monarchy showed support, of course there's resentment

It's not really helpful to label people as far right for displaying the national flag of their own country.

Like so much, it's about context. St George's day, England playing football, New Year's Eve in London, last night of the proms, all fairly normal places to fly flags. Sticking 17 of them round an Indian family's house or standing outside a "migrant hotel" etc, a bit threatening. It's not really difficult.

Nah that's an absolutely cringe reason. I don't like Britain first. Also, the attack was done by a Jihadist, not a self-proclaimed "patriot".
Take back the Union Jack. ๐ฌ๐ง This is the flag of the WHOLE Kingdom and of her other realms and territories. Not some bigot or fascist's flag.
Cringe reason or not it's hard to deny it's not being co-opted by far right organisations for racist reasons.
Okay, and? Racists breathe (unfortunately) should we stop breathing also? There are plenty of people who identify as Christian but are hateful bigots, does that mean I shouldn't be a Christian? If you started flying the Union Jack and St George's cross more, the racists would find something else if this was the case.
What a dumb argument re: breathing. As before context. Their breathing isn't specifically being used to target people even if it results in people being targeted. If everyone started flying flags all the time (which is frankly bizarre, there's no historical precedent for this and frankly people who go all out over a flag in England have always been seen as a bit weird) the racists would see it as vindication and support.
On VE day? That would most certainly come under special occasions, no? We're talking about day to day hanging of flags in the street.
Happens where I live quite frequently. Going back even to when my parents were younger.
Frequently like on special occasions? That's normal enough. I'm from a regular year round flag flying region. I can assure you it does not aid in cross community cohesion.
Flax is from Northern Ireland, I don't know why they feel it's so important for England to adopt their toxic flag culture.
I am too, they should be well aware of the territorial nature of flags in these here parts.
