Not much they call do about it?!

How about stopping your stupid war in the middle east?

I'm not sure I've come across a more brain dead analysis.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 44 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (5 children)

Trump can't stop it. The Iranians control the strait; only they decide when we're done. Nothing Trump can do, even surrendering and withdrawing completely from the entire middle east, can force them to let ships through if they don't want to.

I cannot overemphasize how royally and permanently Trump fucked up by disrupting the previous status quo, where Iran still thought the US had power to enforce maritime law.

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago

Yep. Iran has won this war for all intents and purposes.

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

But have you considered more tariffs?

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They have no reason to stop the ships if trump buggers off. They'll charge, but there's not a lot trump can do about that before he dies.

[–] aquovie@lemmy.cafe 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I don't think Trump has the ability to stop. His ego won't let him and his party won't force him. If the US surrenders (and that's exactly what it will be), the MAGA movement will die. Trump and Iran are like Putin and Ukraine right now.

Consequently, this is also why the Democrats absolutely can not force a surrender either: it will give MAGA a scapegoat. "We were winning but the leftist socialists made us surrender!" It doesn't matter that it doesn't make any sense, MAGA will accept that as absolute truth because they're a cult.

Trump is pathologically unable to make rational decisions, yes, and extraordinarily badly motivated.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

But why would they continue if the war ended? There would be no reason to.

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Money. We've shown them that they can charge for transit through the strait.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yes, but continuing to bomb them isn't going to change that.

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They can now charge for access to the strait.

[–] whyrat@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

The access charge would probably be less than the current cost.

Or a better way to phrase it: more oil tankers would traverse the strait if the price was known and stable, compared to the risk of attack and unknown outcome they currently face.

[–] gdog05@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You say Trump fucked up. I say Trump behaved as intended with the intended result.

[–] Yew@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You're giving him way too much credit.

[–] gdog05@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I never said this was his plan. The only plans he's personally capable of are raping, stealing and ego feeding. That's his limits. But he's capable of thinking ideas are his very readily, and following plans of others.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You think Trump intended to make the GOP as unpopular as possible just before the midterm?

[–] obviouspornalt@fedinsfw.app 5 points 1 month ago

I think he intended to hand the oil industry a vast windfall.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Yes. Forced to say victory just around the corner.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Trump can't stop Bibi, do he can't make peace with Iran. Also he can't admit defeat.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There was no shortage of people on here telling me Biden cold stop Netanyahu with one phone call, or by just stopping arming him. Admittedly that's a huge oversimplification to the point of untruth. (Israel has weapons to last a long long time and no one really respects trump beyond lip service, least of all Netanyahu.)

But he can stand down his bombing and Iran would open the strait with charges and international oil shipments would resume.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No because the Iranian governement has demanded Israel stops attacking Lebanon.

Bibi won't and Trump can't make him, so he can't make peace with Iran.

Thats the silly part, if the US hadn't partaken in the bombing they would've been fine.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Trump can just stop bombing Iran himself. He never had to join Israel's war and he doesn't have to stay in it either. Or he can continue to get his ass handed to him, humiliating the USA further.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yeah he can, unfortunately that are not the conditions on the table, so he won't end the war that way.

Who could've foretold he was very bad at diplomacy?
