450 °K = 176.85 °C = 350.33 °F

[–] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

JUST shy of book-burning temperature (according to my learnings from reading Ray Bradbury).

Apropos username. Thx. Replied to wrong comment. Oh, well...

Haha, all good

Although if you put paper in a 450F oven, it's definitely catching on fire (because swing temps).

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My oven can get up to (and past) this temp. Unfortunately the door locks so I can't get a preview of Satan's home (it only does it for pyrolytic cleaning).

People hack ovens to let them use this mode to cook pizzas

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My oven has a pizza mode 😆. Surely at 450 Celsius the pizza is just gonna come out black... I think pizza mode is more like 260 heated from underneath.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well, if you put it in for 1s at 450, will it come out black? Course not, it takes a little time. So there's a time that'll cook the surface perfectly. Turns out that, since pizza is very thin, a couple of minutes at 450 is perfect.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I never considered that a short sharp cook would be better than longer at a lower heat. I already only cook the pizzas 3-5 mins.

Hmm, maybe I will need to learn how to hack my oven.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's like cooking a steak :) you want to brown the surface but not dry out the inside

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 2 months ago

I feel like I have quite some learning to go on cooking the perfect pizza!

Thanks, fellow metric user! Freedom units shouldn't have a place in this world

[–] froh42@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I bake pizza at 400.

Celsius.

[–] nightwatch_admin@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So do I, but Kelvin. Takes me a while.

[–] VonReposti@feddit.dk 2 points 2 months ago

Great temp for some pulled pork.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Legit how you get restaurant-style blackened crust. Make the crust thin and bake for 3 minutes

[–] froh42@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I'm aming for Neapolitan style pizza, my electric pizza oven is OK, but sometimes I still wish I had a garden for a real wood-fired oven.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sure, but that requires a pizza oven.

[–] antimidas@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

Yep, the closest I can get with my own oven is 300 celsius with a pizza stone. At that point the heating elements are on pretty much constantly. It leads to a relatively good crust, but still isn't as good as a proper pizza oven. I've seen some normal electric ovens that go up to 350 here, which could be enough to make up the difference.

The oven is also clearly not meant to be used like this on the daily. Parts of the oven exterior get to around 200 degress celsius when baking multiple pizzas.

Both are arbitrary scales. People tend to prefer the one they grew up with. Yes, water boiling at 100°C is neat. No, that doesn't mean people who use Fahrenheit are wrong. Unless they're doing science, cause SI units are important (Zenon did nothing wrong)

Also, the meme is supposed to be both. Using the American (400°F preheat is normal) assumption of relevance (yes, it's a real thing) but then pulling the switcheroo and using an image corresponding to Celsius.

[–] observantTrapezium@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Both are arbitrary but only one is an international standard

[–] village604@adultswim.fan -1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Metric is good for precision, but imperial is good for quick head math. Like, I do carpentry in imperial, and 3D modeling in metric.

As far as temperature goes, Celsius is better in every range but weather. 0 to 100F goes from cold as fuck to hot as fuck.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

but imperial is good for quick head math

Both are good for quick head math. The only difference you are experiencing is your own familiarity with one over the other.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 2 months ago

I literally said I was familiar with both.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 4 points 2 months ago

I grew up with F, but now I'm all for C. It drives me crazy that the US (where I grew up) refuses to change.

[–] helpImTrappedOnline@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

The meme is clearly saying the oven is at 450°C, which is 723.15K.
