Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1039 readers
224 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

Anyone, who doesn’t tread the „destroy Israel“ party line gets banned from [email protected]

Edit: although people here hate Israel and different opinions with a passion, nobody could cite the actual rule I broke.

Context: https://lemmy.world/comment/14613536 Screenshotted context just in case:

A user claims that the killing in Palestine stopped under Biden now. I point out that biden had full-throatedly supported the genocide for over a year. A mod deletes my post and says that biden didn't "state" (keyword here) full-throated support for genocide.

I counter by saying I consider sending billions in support of genocide counts as full-throated support for genocide. I also point out that I didn't say Biden stated his support for genocide and that he didn't need to outright state it because actions speak louder than words.

I receive a temp ban for that counter and the mod adds a response where they claim the weapons were "provided for defense from Iran, full stop." which sounds to me like actual misinformation because how the hell does bombing hospitals in Gaza defend Israel from Iran? I'm not bothered by their stupid opinion, but I am bothered that they are enforcing it through moderation.

I ran into a similar moderation problem on the Political Memes community also on .world, but I didn't bother making a post here for that because that's just a dumb meme community and I was better off just blocking it, but now this is concerning a world news community and it's awful to see something like this happening in a community that's supposed to keep people aware of the news.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong and it actually is misinformation to say it's full-throated support of genocide to send billions in weapons to a country using those weapons to commit genocide. Please let me know what you think!

I don't expect this to play particularly well here, and maybe I'm just being conspiratorial, but here goes:

I banned [email protected] from [email protected] earlier today- he literally posted a matt walsh youtube link and was being otherwise transphobic in a space where that gets you banned. (link)

one of jordanlunds removed comments w/ matt walsh video:

spoiler

the reason I put down was 'trolling about neopronouns' I stand by that, it was violating instance rules and was unacceptable behavior from a moderator of another instance.

Shortly after that I got banned from [email protected] for 'trolling'. To be clear, jordanlund does not moderate [email protected], but the timing struck me as an odd coincidence.

The .world thread in question (link)

I was expressing my actual opinion/position on this, if anything the post I was replying to should be considered a rule 1 violation implying leftists are russian/under russian sway:

spoiler

The removed comments that I was banned (permanent) for were just me being earnest about my position, which you're welcome to disagree with.

I don't view protecting my rights as something worth sacrificing other people for, even if they're on the other side of the planet. You can be mad at me or hate me for that, but I'm not trolling.

People replying felt it was reasonable to call me an idiot for example, yet another example of selective moderation. on .world.

I don't have any conclusive proof that my banning Jordanlund and then getting banned are related other than the suspicious timing, I welcome clarification.

Anyway in the interest of neutrality and transparency I submit both my ban and jordanlunds for review.

Hello everyone,

This is kind of a meta discussion, so if it doesn't fit the community, let me know and I'll crosspost it somewhere else.

There has been occurrences of people making broad statements against instances, communities, mods or admins. As Lemmy's recent versions (0.19.7 I think) allow to see someone's moderation history in a click (see below), I tend to use it from time to time, especially when the person is targeting admins or not that are known to be level-headed and consistent.

If the modlog shows that this person is indeed known to be toxic or arguing in bad faith, I would then post something like "heavy modlog" with a link to the user's modlog.

It seems like this behaviour could be considered harassment by some people. On the other hand, it allows people to identify directly if that person is arguing in bad faith, the same way very new accounts get regularly called out on their account age.

What do you think?

(Note that the quoted bit I'm replying to ends after the word "...issue" and my words begin at "What a fucking...")

In roughly 30 years online, across a wide variety of communities on a wide variety of platforms, zero of them would have removed that comment as "trolling."

Except .ml, apparently.

As I'm having to decide sometimes on whether something is on-topic or not, and we can always make mistakes, I've opened a matrix channel for YPTB for meta discussions.

If you think we locked/removed your submission in honest error, please let us know there (instead of immediately creating YTPB about us being bastards! pirate captain laughing)

edit: As I'm seeing a lot of worry about the impact this will/could have on the community, please be assured we have the same mod team, and will be holding the community to the same standards. the same things that were always allowed will continue to be allowed and the same things that got things removed before will continue to get things removed before. Lemmy.world admins have agreed to allow us to run our community on our terms. It is my pleasure to announce that effective immediately, we are transferring our community to Lemmy.world! This has been a few months in the making, so my entire mod team is already on board. FAQ: Why? That's a complicated question with a long answer! The primary difference is moderatorial and ideologial differences between my team and Ada's excellent team of admins. We are on good terms with Ada and her team, and have gotten her consent to do this. In addition to this, we have had ongoing issues with federation and moderation that has caused a subpar experience for many people on other instances. How does this work? Currently, as there is not an easy way to transfer an entire community (trust me, we checked), we are locking the community as mod-only, and moving our focus to the 196 on lemmy.world. For you guys, functionally nothing has changed. What about the posts? Well, we tried to transfer them, but there was no real way to do so without absolutely destroying lemmy.world's federation. For this reason, we are simply archiving this community as mod-only. Everything is staying up, you just won't be able to post new content. Comments are still enabled, so we will continue to check our modlogs for some time after the transfer has settled. As for the posts on lemmy.world's 196, we're leaving those up too. From this point onwards, all posts made to that community are beholden to the rules you are all used to, but anything pre-existing is getting grandfathered in.

IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, PLEASE PUT THEM IN THE COMMENTS OF THIS POST, AND I'LL DO MY BEST TO ANSWER THEM. Once again, here's the link to our new apartment of awesome. (universal: [email protected])

I cannot repost what Flying Squid was posting here, because it involved highly disturbing and dangerous content, including:

Content WarningGraphic content, harassment, self-harm, and suicidal ideation, which I reported immediately.

While this behavior is shocking, it’s not completely out of left field, as members of this community and platform will already be familiar with their behavior. Flying Squid has long been regarded as one of the least productive and most problematic mods on all of Lemmy, often picking fights and abusing their mod privileges. I view this change as a positive step for Squid, .world, and Lemmy as a whole.

I actually even liked the app. Bruh.

Edited as per rules:

This is a post about the newly-viral in the west Chinese social media app Rednote.

I actually liked the app and even said as much, however the app prompts a permission for "Making and managing phone calls" as you can see in my first comment (linked below), I felt it needed to raise this as a potential concern as it's suspicious.

Original comment is at: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35733739/16034665 And https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35733739/16035177 And https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35733739/16035273

Original post is above the linked comments.

The potentially offending text is spread across several comments, the ban does not cite any specific comment.

Modlog is at: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/modlog?page=1&actionType=All&userId=7652836

Reason: Rule 1 on World News at Lemmy.ml, which goes as such:

No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia. Code of Conduct.

What's even funnier is I'm a bisexual trans woman from Russia, I'm about half of those things they are banning me for being prejudiced against, a fairly regular visitor and commented on .ml, hexbear vet (also banned unrelated to this lol), actually a pretty big fan of Mao (though he made some questionable decisions) and have had a book of his quotes by my bedside for god knows how many years by now, it's my support network when I need to feel heard in rage against various bastards like landlords.

I even liked the app and said it's probably not malware in my opinion as someone with genuine qualifications and a dayjob of making such calls. I was frankly not just being not bigoted, I was pretty charitable too for a multitude of reasons, one of which is to make the tankoids at ml more receptive to it.

However I guess unless I literally mindlessly see mandarin and go soyjak over it every time it's not simpling enough. Tankies isn't even it, it's literally weabooisn for china.

I just got banned from /c/latestagecapitalism for calling out GodlessCommie in a completely different thread. If you look at their modlog they're ban happy and spread loads of Chinese misinformation.

Please no brigading, I'm only linking for context.

Criticising the OP for being spiteful by saying "Served them right!" in the post when lack of customers resulted in menu changes, which still failed to save the restaurant is hardly "excusing carnism" or being a "fake vegan" in my opinion.

"fake vegan" isn't in the rules anywhere either? Odd really.

Failing to celebrate the closure of a (formerly) vegan restaurant due to lack of customers hardly sounds like 'carnist rhetoric' (rule 5) to me but what do I know.

#remember no flamewars that means you have to be nice to me and not say "YDI"
^(/s)

###my issues with this

  • there is no rule against political posts

  • all but two people in the comments seemed to be having fun with it

  • i didnt receive a moderator warning- my post was simply removed with a frivolous reason given

  • a shitposting community is the only place to post a shitpost like that ^(because if its posted elsewhere its just trolling or at least not funny)

i did expect the second post to be removed and agree that the ban is fair assuming its temporary

it was a text post so ill just paste it in the comments here

Dafuck? Removed for rule 3? [email protected] what the?

As far as I'm aware running and getting DNS to work on a home network is precisely everything to do with self-hosting.

I get that I'm being a bit of an opinionated asshole, and maybe my post is not overly constructive, but shit, a good rant to start a discussion should not be a reason for removal, least of all for a rule that has blatantly not been violated and that's the only actual reason I can think of why I'd been banned.

A good rant is literally the most worthwhile content imho, a good hearty debate invites viewpoints and opinions, even if the OP is unpopular. I hate the sterile, overly polite, overly PC tone enforced on some Lemmy communities.

As long as no one is literally insulting other users or spreading misinformation or being discriminatory/xenophobic based on characteristics. I wasn't even swearing. I'm so done, I'm blocking all of lemmy.world until they get their shit together.

OK peeps, I am seeing a lot of flamewars lately which go off-topic of this comm. I am also getting dozens of reports about people reporting each other for "rudeness" or "trolling". I don't want this comm to start becoming a drama haven, so I want to try and prevent people getting worked up like this.

What do you think about me starting to deploy strategic 1-day bans for people who I notice are getting into flamewars? If not, what else do you suggest to help people remain civil?

Don't just upvote/downvote. I won't take these into account, I want actual comments about this to better make a decision.
