Very excited for Cosmic. I wanted to like Gnome but it's a pain in the ass in so many ways, with weird design decisions that constantly ruin the experience. They tell you to use extensions to get basic features like a system tray, but then break extensions every update.

KDE is in a fantastic spot but I'm ready for something new.

I played something like 15 hours when EA first released before deciding to put it away

Same here, you're in for a treat. There's a lot that's been improved.

They extended security upgrades for one year only. Still, a major win!

A standardized file format isn't comparable to them changing software they own though. They can't "take back" WEBP and it's well-supported by basically everything these days. There's zero risk of a rug pull, so why wouldn't you use it when it's objectively better at compression compared to something like jpeg and gif?

Proton’s official account said the company was “alerted by a CERT that certain accounts were being misused by hackers in violation of Proton’s Terms of Service,”

Proton’s CEO later announced that the accounts were reinstated, following another post by the company that said the company does “stand with journalists,” but that it “cannot see the content of accounts and therefore cannot always know when anti-abuse measures may inadvertently affect legitimate activism.”

Sounds reasonable to me? It's not a good look but it sounds like they quickly re-instated the closed accounts. The article title is misleading.

FWIW they did nerf the final DLC boss heavily over a month after release, he's now fair and you can dodge his previously undodgeable attacks.

Boar guy is ass, I'm with you on that one. Luckily he's totally optional at least.

I really enjoyed SOTE but I'm just not a fan of how they did progression. Just finding items that increase your damage and defense was kind of boring compared to the main game where you made complex builds. It also made replaying the DLC kind of a nightmare because you have to run around collecting fragments before doing anything else.

But exploration was fun and so were the bosses IMO :)

It's been 2 hours since the game launched and I STILL can't check out. Not even steam sales had servers this busted!

I have looked into the nim GDExtension and it looks nifty. I haven't tried it yet though because it might not be totally ready, some github issues make it sound like it could be a pain to work with.

Unreal 2.5 is so old, your perception of engines is probably way outdated. Things are so much easier and more cohesive now, you'll definitely enjoy modern gamedev tools. Since you're already an experienced programmer you should be up and running with Godot in only an hour, there's a tutorial in the official documentation that you can skim. You can probably look into a Godot crash course video on youtube too for a quick overview.

Recently bought a used Switch 1 as people were getting rid of them to buy the new one, but I found out that mine came with an insane amount of drifting.

Opening it up was a pain in the ass and pretty scary, but I managed to fix it by putting a card over the metal plate on the left (to apply pressure under the joystick as many people online instructed)... And it worked!

It used to drift all the way to the left whenever I let go of the analog stick, but now it snaps firmly back to the center. Just wanted to put out a PSA that if your Joycon is drifting, it's very fixable. All you need is the right screwdriver and being very careful when lifting up each piece.

Just saw this interesting article by the Witchfire devs on creating big games with small teams. Really interesting read!

What a gorgeous demo page!

For personal reasons, I no longer feel safe working on Linux GPU drivers or the Linux graphics ecosystem. I've paused work on Apple GPU drivers indefinitely.

I can't share any more information at this time, so please don't ask for more details. Thank you.

If you think you know what happened or the context, you probably don't. Please don't make assumptions. Thank you.

I'm safe physically, but I'll be taking some time off in general to focus on my health.

Well that's sudden.
