Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Some Highlights (courtesy of xeddit):

  • Sprinting, super jump, and double jump
  • Every character is equipped with some means of attacking from a distance, including guns.
  • Over a dozen characters for the player to choose from, each with their own identity and appearance, with unique elements to the character designs and the weapons and abilities they use
  • Hub area, where players can choose their character, customize them and enter online multiplayer, supports up to 8 players.
  • Online matches are generally last player standing, however there are certain cases where victory conditions differ. For example, players may be tasked with teaming up to take down a powerful boss enemy, or find themselves in other special circumstances.
  • The Duskbloods implements “Victory Points,” which are responsible for ultimately deciding the outcome of a match. To obtain Victory Points, direct combat is of course important, but it’s not the only way. Some players may prefer to earn points by avoiding direct combat and instead engaging in more opportunistic behavior. How you earn points is entirely up to you.
  • “Another important aspect is match variables, such as the event system. This system has the potential to alter the course of the match, such as special enemy spawns and additional objectives with accompanying bonus rewards. In the trailer, you may have noticed a giant stone face looming in the sky. This is one example of the events that can occur in a match. In this case, the appearance of this stone face affects the environment and changes match rewards, which can have an immediate impact on player motivations and objectives.”
  • “Analyzing and altering a character’s blood history and fate allows players to customize all sorts of things, from their abilities, appearance, and inner characteristics to the role they play in the world and relationships with other characters”
  • “Roles give players special responsibilities and objectives that often lead to unique interactions and relationships between players based on their corresponding roles: For example, if a player possesses the ‘Destined Rivals’ role, another player is designated as their rival, and they are tasked with finding and defeating that player. Doing so counts as achieving a personal goal, separate from the overall victory conditions. Another example is ‘Destined Companion,’ where one player is required to seek out another designated as their companion, which results in a special reward if they form a bond with one another.
  • Roles can be assigned to any character via blood customization, allowing players to enjoy role-playing in a literal sense and hopefully adding to the drama of these engagements.

  • Fromsoftware will still focus on single player games in the future
  • 10+ selectable characters with different abilities and perks. These characters would still be customizable to a certain degree
  • Main victory condition of the game session is to be the last man standing, "but this can change depending on the situation". 8 players multiplayer.
  • Sometimes the victory condition will be focused on defeating bosses
  • Game will be forgiving for people who are "not good at PvP"
  • Games session will have some random events to make cycle less repetitive

10 years ago, on March 24th of 2015, a wonderful game was released. Throughout, the decade, we have seen hunters come and go, some still here in this eternal hunt… Regardless of whether you have put your weapons down or not, join us in celebrating this huge milestone for our beloved Bloodborne! Share your favorite memories with the rest of us below.

Speaking of weapons… now is the annual Return to Yharnam event, lasting one week. Brush off that dust and join us all in jolly cooperation, the bloody hunting of hunters, or just play alongside the rest of the community for a little revival.

Happy Hunting!

Here are a couple of videos and video essays I've watched and enjoyed a lot in the past for numerous soulslikes. I can definitely recommend any of them and have sorted them by game. The length can vary a lot, so many of them are probably videos you'd wanna watch/listen to over the span of a couple of days. I've had loads of fun with them and recommend checking out the respective channels for sure.

As you might have guessed, I have a soft spot for Bloodborne and Lies of P wherein my personal standouts would be "Visceral Feminity" - a video essay that deals with Bloodborne's imagery and its parallelity to the female experience - and "How Lies of P Twists Pinocchio's Origins" - a video essay that explores the similarities between the original Pinocchio novel and Lies of P and shows how its lore and world building are translated for the game.

Do feel free to comment your favourite video essays about any of the soulslikes you can think of and are passionate about. I'll add it to the post's body so people have a nice comprehensive list to check out in the future. I'll also pin the post for a couple of weeks for visibility.

Enjoy :)

Mind you, this is my fourth playthrough, so I know my way around the game and the enemies more or less. The Black Rabbit Brotherhood fight always gave me trouble, though. It is very much comparable the Shadows of Yharnam from Bloodborne but some reason, the Shadows feel easier than both the first as well as the second Brotherhood fight.

In my previous playthroughs, I died a lot in this fight and had to summon a specter quite often to have a fighting chance. In this playthrough, I picked up the Two Dragons Sword, or whatever it's called, and just beat them on my first try (NG+), however. It was still close, and I think I had to go down to my last heal, but it was still very manageable and relatively easy. No summons, no cheeses, just straight parrying and Two Dragons Sword parrying here and there.

For some reason, that brother with the red scarf who has a one-handed scimitar gave me quite a bit of trouble, though. Usually, he was the easiest of them all.

How was your experience with them?

Edit: Shouldn't have spoken so soon - getting clapped by King of Puppets now D:
