You can help by writing to Apple CEO Tim Cook (tcook@apple.com) and letting him know that you won't buy Apple devices because of their proprietary software and DRM.

There really has to be a better call to action than this:

What a stupid, nothingburger article.

The company is considering releasing millions of old email addresses that were originally created by bots in its early years. These accounts were disabled almost immediately, but the addresses lived on. [...] The problem is that many of these addresses are extremely common.

So what? The author rambles about the horrors of getting emails from people who have accidentally written in a generic email handle. It's not a huge deal. Tons of people using other email services like Outlook and Gmail also have generic usernames, it's a user's choice on whether to get one or not. These are old bot accounts that have been disabled for almost a decade, so it's not like somebody would send emails assuming it was the old person using the handle.

Proton says it wants community feedback, which is good, but the fact that it is even considering such a reckless idea makes me question the company’s judgment.

"I'm mad that the company is surveying their community", great argument.

Have you read the article? These are old bot accounts that have been disabled for almost a decade. It's in the very first line.

Microblogging has always sucked IMO. It's always been more geared towards shouting your opinion and leaving, and it actively discourages any discussion by hiding reply threads and making it a nightmare to follow. Most people aren't ready for this take, though...

I don't know what weird-ass stawman you built, but it's obviously not from anything I said

your position seems to be “we won, everybody drop your weapons and party, google is good again”

No?

and you follow by bashing linux phones in your subsequent comments…

"Bashing" Linux phones by saying they're buggy and won't be ready soon, which is literally true. Even PostMarketOS says the same thing on their website. I guess you'd prefer I gaslight people by saying Linux phones are awesome, let's all switch to phones that barely work, lack any phone apps, have a terrible battery life, etc.

Deluded or in bad faith for sharing official news?

[–] popcar2@programming.dev 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

The Linux phones that exist today (including Pine Phone) are more like early dev kits. They have really weak specs, are incredibly buggy, lack all sorts of features you'd expect, and I'm not totally sure if you can even make calls through them because phone carriers require a verified device and proprietary tech to work.

There are efforts to get things in order but these will take maybe 10 years at this rate.

[–] popcar2@programming.dev 44 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm guessing they're going to hide it in developer tools with a bunch of warnings and no explanation on how to get there so regular users don't turn it on by accident.

That'd be nice, but Linux on phones is still a pipe dream.

You don't have to use NTFS. In fact, it's not recommended, but the biggest reason you'd want to is if you were dual-booting Windows and wanted to access the same files from both operating systems.

This is good info, thanks! I'll add it to the fstab entry in a bit.

Edit: I've tested it for a bit and made sure the symlinks still work with non-Windows characters. Added it to the guide :)

Help you how...? If you want to make a game, learn game development.

Lovely to see the pace is getting back up after a long time in feature freeze for 4.5, there are a few PRs I really want to be merged.

I'm currently running CachyOS (arch-based) and am looking for a good app to download flatpaks easily. I previously used Discover but it was really slow. What's a good program everyone uses for getting and managing Flatpaks now?

We couldn't possibly be more excited to announce that we've completed the Early Access development of Hades II, and officially launched v1.0 of the game!! Whether you've been playing all through Early Access or this will be your very first foray into our take on the Underworld of Greek myth, we welcome you and thank you for joining us!

I'm playing it right now after a year of not playing early access (I decided to wait until full release). It's so much more polished and I'm glad I waited, from the get-go I noticed combat is a lot smoother, and all the menus and art have been improved.

Anybody playing it here? What're your impressions?

Saw this today and thought it was interesting.

Most surprising was ESRB claiming 78% of parents regularly use ESRB ratings and 86% use parental controls on their kid's console.

Maybe it's just that parents have gotten more technical and aware of bad content but it felt like every single child was playing mature games like GTA V back in the early 2010s. Nobody cared what kids were playing.

Another shocking stat was Dragon Ball Sparking Zero being the #5 top grossing PC/Console game in 2024. I know that series is popular but... How? There's been very little buzz around it.

Not mentioned in the patch notes is that they apparently made many environmental hazards deal 1 damage instead of 2, including the worms at Blasted Steps and the cogs in act 2. In classic Team Cherry communication, they just didn't include it in the patch notes!

programming.dev has been having some server issues lately. I've also occasionally been getting REALLY slow response times, waiting 5+ seconds to refresh the page.

This RC2 fixes the last of the critical regressions that we are aware of. Unless someone reports a new regression coming from the changes made in RC1 or RC2, we should be on track to release 4.5 stable soon.

Fiiiinally. Hopefully everything is patched up because 4.5 has been in feature freeze for a while now.

4.5 release is imminent!
