On one hand, yes this was terribly stupid.

One the other, I understand why people are forced to drive under desperate circumstances to get to work, doctors appointments, etc. because public transit in most places is so bad it’s worthless.

There’s a reason that your instance (and others) has defederated from hexbear.

i don't think hexbear is a good sample group for the average lemmy user nor representative of lemmy users a whole. you might do better sampling lemmy.world, or assembling a meta poll from the top 5 or top 10 instances.

And exactly what is that red line?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 10 months ago

Your argument is ridiculous.

You asked me why I don’t want multiplayer Fallout, and I told you. If you don’t like it, that’s your problem.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Fallout should only ever be a single-player game. The whole point is that you’re going it solo. That’s where it shines.

But more than that, I have never had a gaming experience that wasn’t made worse with other players.

as long as you still vote for biden. hold your nose if you must. i know i will be...

and, so, it is critical that we vote

I found this very interesting:

Persuading the BBC not to describe sperm whale clicks as “language” in their Blue Planet II series was the highlight of my science communication career. Why?

A lot of complex communication is going on in cetaceans, much of which we still don’t understand. However, I am convinced that we should drop the stifling and anthropocentric focus on language. It crowds out other perspectives on what is going on – for example, the relationship between rhythm-based communication and music might be a better way to understand the bonding function of coda synchrony in sperm whales.

We should be wary of ranking species on a single dimension relative to humans, as if all evolution is a path to something like us (much like early anthropologists ranked societies by their progress toward western “perfection”). Instead, let’s take ourselves off the top of the ladder and see other animals as distinct branches of an evolutionary tree.

I find great logic in the argument of understanding animal communications in relation to the animals themselves rather than their relation to us.

exactly. i understand that doing bad things is bad because i feel guilt and shame when i do bad things. conversely, i feel good when i do good things. I also understand the broader implications of both-- not to mention that i have empathy and can see the impact of my actions upon others while caring as well.

i don't need a fairy tale to threaten me with eternal torture in order to not be a sociopath.

This person is openly telling you that the only thing stopping them from being a shitty person is some myth about otherworldly punishment after they die.

Which, of course, means they’ll be juuuust as shitty as they believe they can get away with.

Edit 2: to everyone suggesting an SDD: i know. Look, if this guy had enough $$$ for an SSD, he could buy a used lappy less than half the age of this one that has an ssd and 2-3x the memory.

Currently, my buddy has a budget of $0, and, if he ever has money to spend, it will be on a newer computer, not upgrading this one. Thx!

My buddy’s old laptop was useless running Windows 7. I wiped it, put on Linux Mint (MATE), and it’s humming along just fine.

Edit: I really love helping people out like this. This guy is in his late 60s and has no other computer. He told me he hasn’t been able to use it in years (I believe it!), so I told him I could wipe it and make it usable again. He was thrilled!

After trying LM Cinnamon, I found it was a bit too much for this machine (Core 2 Duo “Penryn” @ 2.3GHz, 2.77GB Memory, Intel Series 4 Integrated Graphics). I reinstalled with LM MATE, and found it more responsive. I did the standard secondary installation of all the goodies like multimedia codecs, TTF support, battery tweaks, etc. I set up snapshots and the firewall, and installed UBlock Origin in Firefox. I updated everything. Shockingly, the battery still gets about 90-120 minutes, which blows my mind. The damn thing is 18 years old!

So, it’s still slow to launch stuff, as it’s running off of a slow HDD, but it manages to run most things just fine. It’s certainly far more responsive than Win7, and it enables my buddy to enjoy safe, secure, and modern web browsing (which is pretty much all he uses it for).

First of all, the show is very good. I’m extremely impressed with how remarkably “Fallout” the world is and how so very good every single visual is. It really IS real-world Fallout brought to life. From the sets, to the costumes, to the set design… every tiny minuscule detail is perfect! The dialogue, the tone, even the weird sense of dark humor; it’s all there. And the trailers hid a lot, which I’m so grateful for!

But it feels like the narrative of a full-on Fallout game (which, I suppose, it should). It takes place (minor spoilers) in LA, about 10 years after Fallout 4. From what I can tell so far, it’s probably the narrative they would have used for FO5. It’s very good, and would have made for a spectacular game I would have spent another 13,000 hours paying over the better part of a decade, but I reeeaaally wish we could have gotten FO5 instead. Or, ya know, also.

He also called on Israel to take immediate steps “to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers” and “made clear that U.S. policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps,” according to the White House statement.

After scuttling a months-long search for a new host, the Paramount Global network said it had enlisted Jon Stewart, who presided over the late-night mainstay’s most popular era, to serve as its host on Monday nights throughout the 2024 election cycle and to run the program. He is expected to oversee the program through 2025. Various “Daily Show” correspondents will host the program Tuesday through Thursday nights, and Jen Flanz, the current executive producer, will continue her duties on the show.
