I hope this is not a spoiler:
From the manga what I can tell is that there is a repetitive pattern of exciting few chapters followed by not so exciting new chapters.

Stick with the story, it will be worth it.

I wish I could hide anything with a spoiler tag. I mostly read the manga, and anything I say will be a huge spoiler for the anime folks.

There is a hacky way to turn the background pitch black using css. There used to be an app that I think could change the background. https://github.com/GradienceTeam/Gradience
