The math makes the issue clear: There is no universal "right" number of clothes.

Saved you a click.

The EU came up with number of wears needed to offset the impact of an article of clothing. They suggest 40-45 for tops and 70 for bottoms. The article seems to suggest that these are perceived as high numbers, but I've had clothes for years that I've worn way more than that and so have most people I know. I may on occasion get a top for an event that I will likely not wear often, like for a themed party, and I have some formal wear I've maybe worn 10 times over the years, but who regularly buys a shirt they don't plan to wear at least that often?

I'm saying Trump should be held accountable. I already called this a witch hunt.

Your original comment can apply equally to them both. That's the problem. Why do we care how old someone is? Either the investigation politically motivated therefore wrong regardless of his age, or it's justified and we should seek justice regardless of people's age.

[–] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago (5 children)

So once Trump leaves office he should not face accountability? Age and health are irrelevant. They are targeting Biden because they are lying idiots who can't get over the fact Trump lost, but Bidens age has nothing to do with that. If Biden were 40 it'd still be a problem.

I'm not both sidesing anything. I said it was a witch hunt. I'm just saying that his age and health are irrelevant. I want Trump investigated for his crimes and the idea that someone thinks he'd be too old or sick to face justice is ridiculous. The issue with this investigation is that it's a political farce, not that Biden is old.

I said it was a witch hunt. I don't think a crime was actually committed, but this line of thinking is why Weinstein went to court with a walker. I do not care how old or sick or frail someone is. Acting like that's at all relevant seems to completely miss the point. My point is that if they did this to Biden or Obama it makes no difference because the issue isn't age or health, it's the nature of the investigation.

Trump is 80 and clearly unwell. Being old and sick is not a reason to escape accountability. This seems like a pretty obvious witch hunt, but I'm just as happy to hold someone accountable who has lived a long life getting away with a crime than someone who just recently committed one.

Wonder what people think of:

“We have no ideological agenda,” reads the document shared with WIRED by a past participant. “Dialog is nonpartisan and nonpolitical. We want all participants to come away with a better understanding of the truth—but we don’t presume to know what the truth is. We simply believe that when we bring together open-minded people who are at the top of their fields, with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, they will learn new things.”

I have definitely been to events with people who have a variety of political opinions, but I'm not sure I want to be in any Thiel backed group. I certainly wouldn't pay to attend a social gathering where prominent people that I think are basically evil will be.

Eric Taylor, the city manager, refused to turn the water on to this location. Yes, there was community involvement, but one person was able to stand up and make the right decision. Once that decision was made, others were able to support it. Local officials really matter and can make a huge impact.

They never said "the best we can do is offer you stuff targeted at girls because, you know, you're essentially a girl anyway", you did. If you think there should be more stuff for certain men, you're free to make it. If not all men relate to that content, I hope they are more capable of nuance than you seem to be. The idea that relating to the experience of another group somehow takes away from your actual identity is not how someone who has a normal relationship with their identity would work.

I date women as a woman and sometimes men will be talking specifically to other men about dating women and I will find what they say relatable. It does not make me question my gender or sexuality. I just think "wow! So true!" and move on with my day.

It's ok to have a similar experience or understanding of the world as someone else, even if they are not talking directly to or about your personal experience.

They are not drawing a line. You're welcome to comment what you like, but this is straight "so you hate waffles?" level of reasoning.

I wouldn't recommend the read.

The writer seems to want to come across as hesitantly drawn in, but ultimately seeking more. What it actually comes across as is a bit of a glaze tempered by a writer who knows what they're doing. It feels like a testament to their ability and makes it clear how/why they profile celebrities for a living.

She mentions the AI had a visual glitch of an inflating head which makes her seem like an impartial reporter, only to bring attention to how that was fixed within a day. Maybe I'm not accustomed to someone being so forgiving with AI, and I'm not familiar with celeb profiles in general, but this gives "apolitical" vibes. She ends it with a little tribute to art from real people, but the interview basically skirts around this even though the creator is there the whole time also involved in the interview.

I can't copy/paste off the site, but there are occasions where the AI provides a response that doesn't really make sense but the writer refers to like it does. I'm struggling to identify if this is a covert dig at the AIs ability to understand context, if I am not understanding, or the writer is not communicating well.

All in all it's a well written piece with nothing to say and likely only serves to get the name circulating. Not quite a fluff piece, but it's what I imagine a smart writer would suggest as a fluff piece.

You not understanding the sentence makes sense if you are not familiar with the way people speak about it day-to-day. It would be like asking what the point of a no kings protest is, considering America doesn't actually have a king. It's OK to not understand or ask the question, but people locally understand what they are saying. It's not a failing of the original commenter that an international audience doesn't follow their complaint about local politics.

I'm not asking or expecting you to keep up with all the acronyms, but accusing someone of lying about being American because you don't understand what they are talking about as a non American is just a weird thing to do.

When they are talking about the electoral college in that sense, they are likely talking about the fact that in Trump's first run if we did not have the electoral college he would have lost. He lost the popular vote, and the distribution of those votes via the electoral college is what actually caused the win. Again, this is a pretty common talking point in the United States.

[–] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I think when they mean "the land" they are referring to a pretty common argument about how not all votes count equally because of the way states are populated and congresspeople are appointed. Someone living in a city in California has diluted voting power compared to someone in Alaska because of population density. This is often reduced to a pithy refrain about "the land" getting votes.

I do agree that being upset that stupid people get to vote is not pro democracy.

"Convicted felon" is something Trump is. That term has nothing to do with serving time, despite the word "convict" sometimes meaning that. People would often type out "convicted felon Donald Trump" and this was shortened. Clearly you were able to deduce from context clues what they were talking about.

EC is a pretty common abbreviation for "electoral college" when already talking about politics.

The fact you're unfamiliar with the landmass argument and EC and they are casually using them seems to indicate that they are more familiar with US political culture and contributes to the idea they are not lying about their location.

I don't know where you're from, but if you're keen on protecting trumps image I'd do some introspection.

For context, Ashley is one of the women who had a baby with Elon and who wrote an anti-trans children's book. I'm not a religious watcher, but I'll occasionally watch one of Taylor's videos. This one had me on the fence for the first 20 minutes, but the latter half made me a bit more accepting of a possible change in Ashley. I don't think the change was prompted by a desire within herself, and she clearly has a lot more work to do, but I'm open to see her change. I'm mostly seeing lip service in this interview and would have preferred a more "hard hitting" approach, but I don't think that's what Taylor really does. The comments seem pretty mixed on the interview and Ashley overall.

I'm not really into flowers, so I'm looking for some advice. I have grocery store orchids from two years ago that are always in bloom. They have 3-7 flowers each basically nonstop. Unfortunately they have far outgrown the 17" stakes I put in their very small original pots and I don't know what my best option would be. I water them with two ice cubes once a week and I'm not looking to really increase the level of investment I'm putting in. I know I'm not doing a lot, but I've not had to feed them or mist them or any of the other things I keep reading online and I'd like to not have to worry about that. My main issue is that they are getting way too tall. I read that you can cut the stems, but I'm worried that any cutting will prompt additional flowering and maybe a need for more water or food or something that I likely won't be able to recognize causing them to die. I also keep seeing people talk about pots with holes and special airable soil, but they are in little plastic cups and I can lift them straight up and the soil is basically a solid almost styrofoam-like consistency so I'm not sure I believe what I'm reading. Any advice or suggestions to preserve the low maintenance aspect while trimming and possibly repotting would be greatly appreciated. I looked online and this post is my exact same experience to a T: https://www.reddit.com/r/orchids/comments/1igq42f/my_orchid_is_over_3_feet_tall_and_not_sure_what/

Most comments there say to cut the spikes so it focuses on leaves and roots, but I really don't think they have enough space for more leaves or roots, and I'm worried that repotting will ruin whatever my streak is with keeping them alive on just ice cubes since that seems uncommon. I've never kept a flowering plant alive for this long, despite a thriving vegetable and herb garden, so I'm a bit attached. If I cut just the ends of the spikes will it still flower? Should I cut the whole spike and just hope it doesn't get too big for the pot? Is repotting really as care intensive as the comments suggest?

As more comes out about the new Harry Potter TV show, I see people say that the child actors are not responsible for their participation. I want to make it extremely clear that is the correct take and no hate or ill will should be directed at the children, but I would like to add that they are not entitled to your financial support either. They have family and a management team that decided this would be a good project for them. Boycotting the child actors as well as the adults is the best way to show that this is a sinking ship of a franchise. The children may not be responsible, but family and management teams around the world need to see that attaching the name of a child actor to a project filled with hate will stain their reputation before they are able to make one. Their management team should be fired and should garner a reputation for making bad decisions regarding projects. Their family should feel as though this was a big misstep in their child's career. Just because they did not make the decision doesn't mean that they won't be profiting from it. Please do not let this boost them to stardom the way it did with the original cast. All that does is demonstrate that it actually does pay to work with hateful bigots so long as you can shift the blame. It's unfortunate, but this should follow them until it's clear that there is no excuse to work with people like JKR and that it will never benefit you. Obviously, I do not condone hate or harassment towards anyone. I think it's ok to express dissatisfaction or disappointment, but in the case of the kids that should be directed at the people making the decision for them, not the children themselves.

Was looking at .world while logged out to find some communities to sub to, and noticed that aljazeera@rss.ponder.cat is not coming up while logged in. I can see bbc@rss.ponder.cat, but I can't find the aljazeera community and if I go to a profile that posts on it I see other posts, just not posts in that community. I have not blocked any users or communities. Is this possibly a reddthat thing? This does not appear to be an issue on non-reddthat accounts.

Thank you!

I was a big fan of the previous fruit smoothie, and would sometimes stop at Costco just for that if I was already in the area shopping, or had a rough day and wanted a pick me up. Recently had a rough day and went to Costco on my lunch break. I noticed they didn't have the fruit smoothie anymore and instead had a new strawberry banana one. I was a bit disappointed, but I was there so I ordered it anyway. I didn't finish it and offered the rest to a coworker once I got back to work. I had one sip and it was just too sweet, in a bad way. I looked it up and apparently it has more servings of fruit, but somehow it tastes extremely artificial. If I end up at McDonalds I will sometimes order their strawberry banana smoothie, and this was similar, but somehow much worse? I'm not sure if I was just expecting better and it was so disappointing that maybe I didn't give it a chance, but I will not be ordering it again. Just letting you all know in case you get curious. I enjoy the food and the prices are great, but I don't think I'll be going there as a treat anymore. Will probably just limit it to when I happen to get hungry while shopping there. Unfortunate, because I would probably make a special trip basically just for the smoothie about once a month. I know it's not enough to single-handedly keep it on the menu, but still.

I'm seeing games (CK3/The Sims/Cities skylines) release DLC done by popular content creators or modders, and I'm not really sure how I feel about it. On the one hand I'm glad they are being recognized for their work and getting paid, on the other hand, it kinda feels like it's turning the already unstable game dev career into an gig economy? Obviously, there are reasons why these studios can't have every creative and talented person working for them all the time, but if they keep going like this, what's to stop them from making larger and larger core mechanic DLCs more like gig work? Maybe that works for these modders/creators, but I worry about the industry in the long run. I'm sure most of the deals are under NDA, so how do they know what they're getting paid is more/less than what someone else did (and yes that matters imho, just because someone undervalued their work doesn't make it ok to pay them less - hence why salary transparency is important and the law in a lot of places)? I also feel like it encourages people to do free work (legit love modders, so no hate here) for the potential chance at getting a larger gig, which is common in the dev space, but I'd like to see that go away completely. I'm conflicted, and I keep hearing people say that it "supports modders" but it feels like in the long run, a stable core team of devs with job security helps everyone more. Like sure, donate to the wildfire victims, but what if the money ends up passing through a bunch of for profit companies who are actively hurting the environment? Just kinda feels off to me. Would love some other perspectives.
