MODERATOR OF

We are two weeks into the month of September now. I think this might be a reasonable amount of time for some readers to have completed this book if they started early this month. At least I finished it last week. I'll leave this thread pinned for the rest of the month and next weekend I'll create the poll for the next book of the month. That poll will end on the last day of the month and the cycle will continue.

Feel free to include as many spoilers as you want in your comments as the post itself is marked as containing spoilers.

I'm hoping someone else could get started or else I will have to. πŸ˜…

What does it mean to "Shout down a speaker"? What are they speaking about and what is the purpose of shouting at them?

We have re-invented trains for the 500th time. Good job world.

Bananas, potatoes, corn, oats, bread and rice are all pretty cheap. When I'm trying to not spend any money I'm fine with a bowl of oatmeal with some sliced bananas in it.

I'll let you know in 2 years when it is on sale for at least 50% off.

Aside from Project Hail Mary which I assume every /c/sciencefiction subscriber is going to read what have you been reading or plan to read?

Here is last months post. What are you Reading? (August 2023)

What is micromobility? I am unfamiliar with this term.

Book of the Month Vote Here

Hello /c/sciencefiction, it is that time of the month. Time to vote for the book of the month. The options are loosely collected from the most voted and discussed books in the "What are you Reading" thread for August.

At the end of the month the poll will be closed and the winner will be the book of the month for August 2023. Myself and hopefully some others will read this book over the following month and then near the end of the month a discussion post will be made to talk about it. Feel free to participate or not at your leisure.

Once the book is chosen it will be set to "Reading" status on the community BookWyrm account here. https://bookwyrm.social/user/ScienceFiction Feel free to follow this account with your own BookWyrm account so other members can find you. This can help people find book recommendations of like minded science fiction readers.

Here are this months selection

I wish people wouldn't use Lemmy as a "link aggregator". Instead of posting links to other peoples content how about having an original thought for once. Why is Lemmy acting as the comments section for some other website?

I'm also convinced these are really just paid for by Apple ads. I've never seen anyone care about such a thing.

I suppose this is considered science fiction. I believe it has just started airing. I've seen the comics on occasion around the internet and had no idea they were planning on adapting this into a series.

Has anyone seen the first episode yet? I'll probably check it out tonight.

I'm not a huge gamer anymore so I actually reduced my setup from 3 16:9 monitors to a single 21:9 monitor. I find myself more focused on the task I am doing when there isn't the distraction of so many open windows.

I recently got this new solid walnut tabletop which is much heavier than the old IKEA tabletop I had that could be pushed around.

Obligatory cat. 🐈

Hello everyone. I am working on reviving the /c/battlestations community which I believe has a potential to be popular. πŸ“Ί πŸ–₯️

Feel free to stop by and share your setup.

I'm pretty sure they think of the person taking care of them as some analogous of a mother. We should be careful not to anthropomorphism their emotions as they are probably not quite as complex as we would like. They certainly have some degree of emotions though.

But they have no concept of "human" or "mother" so I would guess it is more like "thing stops hunger, thing warm, thing safe". Thus they bother you when they are hungry, sit on you when they are cold and come to you when they are afraid.

Digital privacy. It should be illegal to track and store data on people without their consent.

Sounds reasonable. I hope to not accumulate books to a point where it becomes unsightly. If it can't be displayed neatly then I'm not going to. I tend to read things digitally first and if I really like the book then I buy it. Some books I just have from the past already though.
