If it makes you feel better, grammatical genders in Norwegian are arbitrary too. There are no rules or tricks to help you figure out if a noun is masculine, feminine or neuter. :S

Hilariously enough, just today I read a blog post about a service where the client interacts with the database directly - https://clickhouse.com/blog/building-a-paste-service-with-clickhouse. While it's not your traditional OLTP database, it still kinda fits.

I'm gonna refrain from commenting on the "spyware" accusation, but it is a fact that the company is founded by (ethnic) Russians and the majority of their employees are Russian.

I assume, decoding it on the fly? It's possible to encode a JPEG as a JPEG XL losslessly.
