You didn't have to pay if the GPU came with a hardware decoder. But the HEVC patent owners have been infighting over royalties. So some hardware isn't shipping with the codec anymore or have it disabled.

Lately I'm seeing this more and more where posts have comments that will refuse to load. It seems like the issue is getting progressively worse. Right now, I'm using the Alexandrite front end but the default has the same issue where comments don't load.

I'm not going to link it here. But there's a recent article on Streaming Media dot com proclaiming that there is some 3rd parties claiming that AV1 infringes patents. And some how Sisvel conned 51 outfits out of licensing royalties. Some how this big vapor legal battle is supposed to unfold that never came.
