Great idea thanks I'm going to register this domain. I'm also in the Netherlands

This!!

It annoys me so much when people show stocks of a few wees as evidence that a company is doing bad. You should look a year back or more.

Thank you this is very useful, and sounds like a good start. I'll look into this. Cash isn't that tight, so I'll prioritise it being compact and a bit more future proof over doing it cheaply

Synology aren't Open-Source so that's a deal breaker for me.

One of the main reasons I'm getting into homelabs etc. Is to take back control of my software and data.

If Synology decides to lock away features behind a pay wall they can.

TrueNAS sounds like the way to go for me, I'm just clueless what hardware would best fit my needs.

I've recently gotten into homelabs I've got a Mini-PC running Immich and Home-Assistant

I'd like to setup a NAS for the Immich server to save media to.

I'm very new to the game and only recently started looking into this.

One requirement for me is it must be Open-Source. TrueNAS?

What hardware would you recommend? Having 2TB for now with the ability to expand it would be great, a small size would also be ideal.

Open source everything!!

It used to be true that Windows is better for gaming. That's no longer the case.

Since steam deck runs on Linux, they made a compatibility layer allowing you to play windows games on Linux.

I switched to Linux a few months ago and have been able to play all my games just fine.

(also dual boot is an option)

I still don't see how the US can stop anyone from forking Debian etc.

Worst case scenario I can see is "The US implements martial law, no more trade what so ever allowed with anyone outside of the US and they put up a fire-wall to block all internet"

In that scenario we literally just pull Debian from the European mirrors, fork it and create NewDebian.

Problem solved.

Currently we heavily rely on Microsoft, Apple etc. If the US does the same thing, we're fucked because we can't just fork MS or Apple software.

They'll stop receiving updates, but we don't have to switch over in a week right?

Ubuntu is just an example {{insert any Debian based distro here}}

Debian is open source though. So unless they make it closed source we can keep using it.

Making it closed source would probably kill it and a fork would take its place.

Can't we just keep going with Ubuntu and fork it the moment the US wants to do anything funny

You sound very confident for someone who clearly hasn't even seen half the trains Europe has to offer.

It's like confidently saying you Ford Fiesta is the best car in the world, but you've never even seen a Mercedes C63 AMG.

I'm starting to think you're just trolling at this point either that or you're extremely dense

I recently setup a immich server on a mini PC, and can access it through cloudflare etc.

It works pretty smoothly except for files bigger than 100mb (cloudflare limitation)

I have a few questions, if you can answer some please do.

  1. What's your setup like? Do you have any tips/tricks for a newbie I should know about?
  2. What's your backups like? Is your data safe if your house burns down?
  3. Is there a cloudflare alternative I can use that will handle any file size from anywhere in the world without needing to tun on/off a vpn like tailscale?

(i would like to also set it up for my family, but for that is needs to work VERY smoothly, no needing to turn on and off VPN's to sync)

Based in Switzerland and replaces many of the Goolge services, it also has a free tier if you want to check it out. I've moved over due to how dirt cheap storage is
