He lies on his back and has a polished spot at the surprisingly featureless crotch. It's just statue pants. He's also had the high spots of his face polished.

So it would be be less costly to just leave it? I swear, this subject is not indecent enough to warrant this amount of attention, resources, nor effort. Please work on something else.
What costly repairs would a bronze that's touched more require?
Skin oils alone will corrode various metals over years. Also, lots of touching will basically erode it, hence the "polished" look on the statue's entire cleavage

There's a dog statue somewhere that's polished like this too because people pet the dog.
I think there’s one in Tokyo. A famous dog who kept going back to the train station everyday waiting for his master who had died iirc.
