What is geoscience?

Geoscience (also called Earth Science) is the study of Earth. Geoscience includes so much more than rocks and volcanoes, it studies the processes that form and shape Earth's surface, the natural resources we use, and how water and ecosystems are interconnected. Experts say that the devastating earthquake in Myanmar on Friday was likely the strongest to hit the country in decades, with disaster modeling suggesting thousands could be dead.

Myanmar's ruling junta said on Saturday morning that the number killed had passed 1,000, with more than 2,000 injured.

However, the USGS analysis said there was a 35% chance that possible fatalities could be in the range of 10,000-100,000 people.

The USGS offered a similar likelihood that the financial damage could total tens of thousands of millions of dollars, warning that it might exceed the GDP of Myanmar.

"tens of thousands of millions of dollars"

Gee, if only there was a way to write that slightly less idiotic.

Some countries use the long scale and thats a valid number. 1 billion for them is 1 million million, not one thousand million. It’s the same in spanish.

The article is English though. And changed that passage.

The USGS offered a similar likelihood that the financial damage could total tens of billions of dollars, warning that it might exceed the GDP of Myanmar.

(And I was cranky, because someone didn't sleep well...)

Billion is used as 1 million million in the UK. They use milliard for what we call a billion. Expand your experiences.

Bruh, it's "Milliarde" in my language. People are able to learn foreign languages.

Expand your... dunno, taste for sour gummi worms.

If you’re aware of milliard why are you complaining about someone using the long scale? It’s a perfectly valid way to describe big numbers. It was probably a translation error from someone whose mother tongue uses the long scale. You’re the one who called it idiotic, not me.

Because it's unexpected in English. Besides that, is perfectly valid to be irritated by it, are you trying to invalidate my precious feels?

I read it, felt it sounded odd, wrote a snarky comment. If you're the author and I pissed in your shoes - gee man, sorry for your wet shoes. If not... I French kissed your mother's tongue yesterday.
