Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Checked if I got the vaccine when I was a child, yesterday. I was vaccinated.

Get your vaccines if you can folks, not everyone can get it. Herd immunity is important for those who can't or have parents that are stupid (sorry) enough not to let their child get it.

Edit: Clarified that I was vaccinated already.

You can also check immunity if you get a blood test. As we age, some people will have less immunity. One of thesny reasons herd immunity is so important.

"Fun" story, I got my MMR 3x as a kid and another 3x as an adult because my antibody titers were and remain undetectable (i'm not immunocompromised on any level). With the current events I really hope my T-cells are ready for the heavy lifting 😅

Of course, according to RFK Genius, I'd need lower doses not higher because "race".

Did you get the vaccine when you were a child?

Oh good, can't tell if you meant you have measles now or have the vaccine.

Diseases say fuck your borders.

Its crazy how a pandemic happens every time Trump is in office. Like a cosmic warning sign.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Afghanistan I can understand. America, the home of the antivaxx idiots, too. But Europe? There is a small community of antivaxxers here, who took this crazy idea from the US antivaxxers, but with far, far less idiots than the US has. Faith-based exceptions to mandatory vaccinations are not a thing in Europe, which massively curbs this idiocity from spreading. While this does not prevent minor outbreaks, this is much smaller of a problem than in the US.

Far right groups and constant Russian lies about vaccines have made plenty of Europeans antivaxers, sadly.

31,000 cases occured in Romania alone in 2024.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

OK, Romania. Not far above Afghanistan, to be honest.

/facepalm

You know, back in the early days of the Internet, before it allowed commercial content, and before the Eternal September, I was excited at the notion of the democratization of information, and it being a multi-way conversation, not just top-down.

Say what you will about the days of having a few corporations gatekeeping virtually all info, at least back in those days I didn't see them spreading anti-vaccine horseshit.

The ruling class (billionaires and oligarchs) have weaponized people's religion, fear and ignorance into a way to keep everyone corralled and subservient. This outbreak is an unintended side effect of the manipulation.

[–] moody@lemmings.world 9 points 11 months ago (2 children)

What do you mean "side effect?" The head of the health board is telling people not to get vaccinated, and to take vitamins instead. This isn't a side effect, it's entirely intentional.

[–] SendPrudes@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago

Well the problem is the side effects are also in power now too. And so are easily manipulated by the rich but also really fucking stupid.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

That explains the US, but doesn't explain Europe or Afghanistan...

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Can you imagine travelling back a few centuries and telling people "I could protect my family from it but I choose not to"? They'd look at you like you had 2 heads

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Only have to go back a few decades on measles:

The author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory lost his daughter to measles just before it was available as a vaccine....

https://www.unmc.edu/healthsecurity/transmission/2025/03/05/roald-dahls-heartbreaking-letter-about-losing-his-daughter-in-1962/

The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was twenty-four years ago in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her.

He wrote this back in 1988 to address those that were hesitant to get vaccinated back then...I doubt he could have thought that Wakefield would come along later and help to completely fuck up everything.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 3 points 11 months ago

I know and Wakefield was struck off. STRUCK OFF. Yet people believe it

[–] zipzoopaboop@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 11 months ago

So measles vaccinations from childhood are lifetime right? Do we need boosters?
