Just a thought about emotions tonight (lemm.ee)

This relationship between Burt and Irving had me in tears tonight. Not because of gay representation, not because of a cute old couple. But because the writing for these characters has been so great that someone that is relatively young and straight could feel such a strong connection with this. Meaning, I have almost no connection with them on the stereotypes or identities we define, however, they are still the most relatable in this show. Their relationship is so human and so connected.

I don't feel like this is even just good LGBTQ representation (it is don't get me wrong) but it's just such well acted and written that it just representing that on such a human level that I'm just balling my eyes out paused at 35:14.

This show has some flaws but scenes like this just really make me look forward to every week. This was the peak of this season for me.

These two "side" characters have become the most interesting relationship with so much authenticity.

Not sure if anyone is active much here. But just wanted to type some thoughts out into the ether.

Edit: Not directly related to this but you can quote me. "Burt is not severed"

Edit2: I guess the "Burt isn't severed" theory is pretty well thought through after some googling.

I loved this entire episode and really love this show. Your take is spot on. Two amazing actors portraying a scene with such subtlety but also such vibrancy.

You can't help but feel the wave of emotions that John Turturro and Christopher Walkin evoke throughout the show, but especially in this heartbreaking scene (amongst heartbreaking scenes! I mean, Dylan's storyline this episode! OMG!).

I also feel it was such an evocative scene because much of the fan theories around Burt revolved around the possibility he would betray or hurt Irving. They even played the heartstrings a bit on the car ride to the train station, right up until this scene! Ultimately I'm very happy the writers chose not to go down that narrative route.

Glad to see another fan of the show here on Lemmy. Enjoy next week's finale! 🙂

if Burt isn’t severed, that's even more heartbreaking, since he did experience their relationship and still sent Irving away. Does that mean Burt has lied to his husband about being severed this whole time, or his husband was ok with him (not his innie) falling in love with someone else?

Something definitely doesn't add up about Burt's severance. Remember during the dinner conversation Burt's husband(?) said that he had been severed 20 years ago, but then Irving pointed out that severance had only started 10 years ago. Either he isn't severed and has lied to his husband like you said or he was an early test subject years before the procedure became generally available (if so, what kinds of issues may that lead to? incomplete severance?). Why would his husband have said 20 years and then try to cover it up as a simple mistake?

I feel similar. Their love story is by far one of the most heartwarming, heartbreaking and emotional I have seen on screen. Recreating the scene, head to head from season one, this time Irv being ready was such a good throwback.

I have written it under the 209 discussion and say it again: I want to explore Irvs storyline more!

Outie Burt is creepy. For what reason did he break into Irving's house and snoop around? During the whole car drive I was afraid he's about to terminate Irving. It was heartbreaking to see Irving trying to reach, to get the love he never had and Burt fighting himself not to react. I wonder why it was necessary to smuggle Irving out of town, unless Burt is more connected than we currently know.
