But does that make them an American company even though they maybe mostly are based outside of the US?
Ask yourself is Amazon an American company even though they operate everywhere in the world?
The answer is yes.
I think comparing Amazon, a trillion dollar company owned by one of the richest person in the world who's done untold damage to people and communities, to a FOSS company - who make a point to stand by good principles and is not a massive damaging entity - is unfair.
Maybe the only thing that matters is if a company is founded, owned, and operated exclusively or primarily within the EU borders - but I'd wager there is value in this group including some instances of non-EU companies that are good services, not-evil, and don't have EU alternatives that are at least not-evil.
I don't feel like the purpose of this movement is to punish FOSS software providers simply because they are based in the US.
Ente is a FOSS provider that does good work as far as I can tell. In my opinion, they should be supported and grouped together with the "good guys" category (as of today and right now, excluding any future bootlicking tweets their CEO may post).
There's an argument that this group is truly focused only one European alternatives, but I believe in the absence of one (and personally when there only bad/significantly-worse alternatives) some non-EU companies should be listed and supported.
This is not what this sub is about. I feel like some people abuse this sub to advertise FOSS projects. It's about buying European.
Ente is not European. Period.
My personal motivation is to stop buying US products and services. BuyEU is a tool for this
I think that's completely fair. Ente is not European.
I will say, that makes this community far less useful for me but I guess that's a community choice. The most valuable thing for me in product choices is a list of options with high quality reviews and a list of meaningful and well sourced traits. Being European made is one of those traits, but it's not the end all or be all. If there was a trillion dollar Amazon equivalent in Europe it would still be an evil company.
But you're right, that's a philosophical point about the community that is not the stated purpose - a far simpler and (I would argue) far less useful binary check. Don't know what I'll do with that information except unsubscribe I guess? Idk if that's a good action on my part. ๐ค
Is there value in following a news feed full of things that may or may not be good but do for sure have a trait that is meaningful but not paramount? Feels like the hit rate on useful suggestions or discussions would be rather slim.
