Fun fact: some of these are made specifically for US prisons because you can't hide contraband in them.

Welp, that's enough dystopian reality for me today. I was actually hoping to have these for repairability and easier chip identification, but nope, built for prisons you say...

[–] jaark@infosec.pub 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yeah. They are often very locked down and lack features you would normally expect - especially connectivity and configurability. There's a Youtube vid where a guy gets hold of one and the hoops he had to go through to install his own OS and get it to run some games... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRoRPiDOtUg

Bringus mentioned let's go

I love the idea that a product was created to prevent prisoners from smuggling heroin, but then someone said "You know, I bet that would sell great at Sharper Image."

Transparent plastics are the tastiest!

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 2 points 9 months ago

They're also the most brittle which I think is a reason for their dissapearance

I had an atomic purple gameboy at one point and I miss that thing dearly.

I really enjoy seeing the components of a thing and most of my mechanical keyboards have translucent or semi-translucent cases.

They’re not high-tech, but “demonstrator” editions of fountain pens also hit this vibe.

And if anyone is curious, I’m pretty sure the watch in this image is a Swatch JellyFish (or an imitation). Swatch still makes watches like this, but this style is called Clearly Gent now.

Most clear things will look bad after a short time of use, if you have to touch them. They will get scratched or greasy and dirt will become visible in hard to clean areas.

Had none of that with my clear gameboy pocket, that boy was plugged into a wall socket most of the time because of how much pokemon i played on it.

But tbh i wasn't really a greasy kid, i remember friends controllers which were sticky af and made me not want to play because of how gross it made me feel.

That watch is a Swatch and they still make new transparent models, I got one a few months back and posted it to the watch sub.

I would love one of those coloful macbooks from the 90s with current technology.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 9 months ago

My missus got a set of Slime VR trackers and they're all transparent purple plastic. Very 90s.

Prison commissary type beat

Truly. But I can't guess why.

[–] monkinto@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Because if the cover is transparent you have to spend extra money to make sure the internals look good.

[–] Diurnambule@jlai.lu 2 points 9 months ago

Yeah can imagine that. But the free cable era seem finished. Now every cable is printed on a board

[–] gazby@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 months ago

Anbernic does a lot of this for retro consoles these days!

There's also some modders who make transparent aftermarket housings.

Bad news… there’s an Instagram account for JNCO that is back on their bullshit!

Full disclosure, I was a big pants rave kid and def owned JNCOs
