Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

His group spent nearly $1 million on ads opposing Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Donald Trump’s pick to lead the nation’s health agencies. He’s delivering speeches urging the president to stand with longstanding foreign allies and lobbying members of Congress while aides write letters and opinion columns.

This weekend, he posted an article he penned more than a decade ago on the limits of presidential power after Trump claimed that, “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law.”

Mike Pence is emerging as one of the last Republicans in Washington willing to publicly criticize the new administration.

It’s an especially jarring role for the former vice president, whose refusal to break with Trump defined their time together in office until the two had a falling out over Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election and his efforts to remain in power.

When Mike Pence is the reasonable one, you know the timeline is fucked.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 72 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's how I felt about McCain and Romney during Trump 1.0.

Overton Window damn near shattered now.

[–] collapse_already@lemmy.ml 22 points 1 year ago

Pretty sure we're into the Overton Train Wreck at this point. We have destroyed normalcy so greatly that no headline is implausible and the fear of possible prosecution for any dissent is not unreasonable.

If I saw the headline, "Trump announces that the only meat that will be served in federal prisons is the flesh of his political enemies. " My reaction would be some sort of numb, "ah cannibalism, already?"

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 140 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I guess the whole "Hang Mike Pence" thing really stuck in his craw.

The old guard Republicans are just mad the power is being taken from them.

They built this fucking monster, they get to own it. So fuck you Mike Pence, own this shit.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 76 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Nah, I'll happily take a disillusioned Republican who want to fight. The more the merrier, really. They're in no position for a redemption arc but still it's good to have them on our side right now

[–] codexarcanum@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why? So they can betray you at a critical junction to claim power for themselves, or so you can betray them without feeling too guilty about it?

Because you sure as hell can't work with them on any leftist projects. They have zero desire to unconcentrate the accumulated power in Washington, only to claim it for themselves.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not interested in building a bridge here, it's too little too late for that.

But hearing the other team's fans booing their coach? I'm here for it.

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The problem is we have to build bridges. We have to get the working classes organized to stop this. We cannot afford to turn away allies.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Build bridges with the voters, not Mike Pence or any other Republican politicians who changed sides too late.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think the Democratic strategists said the same thing in 2024. And that's part of how we got here.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not advocating for parading Pence around as one of us. Any republican speaking out against Trump is a good thing, we need the party to fracture as much as possible.

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He already was essentially kicked off the party. IMO the old Republican party died with McCain.

Of course I welcome any opposition, but to MAGA Pence is perceived as another Democrat.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

True but a LOT of Trump voters aren't MAGA. They voted for him the same way I've voted since 2016 - begrudgingly.

The next election would be a really good time to campaign on ranked choice/approval voting. We're reaching fever pitch with voter disillusionment.

He’s got nothing to lose and secret service protection. And he has no power to do shit to stop Trump either. He just has some shitty podcast that not one reasonable person should have to listen to.

Edit: autocorrect is shit

That secret service protection, for one. Trump's pulled protection from John Bolton and others. Maybe because he was VP it might be harder legally for Trump to revoke it, but is there anyone still enforcing laws anymore?

[–] ATDA@lemmy.world 82 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's wild that like Pence the farmers, minorities, and other Trump supporters have to literally be threatened with their lives or livelihood to get the fucking message he doesn't fucking care about anyone but himself and those that benefit him in a given instant.

[–] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Bingo. He’s a classic paranoid narcissist.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 44 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you read the article, Pence was opposed to RFK Jr because he was previously pro-choice. Pence's priorities are still deplorable.

[–] JesusTheCarpenter@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago

Yes. Policy is something to criticize politicians for. But he at least comes across as someone that draws the line at the destruction of the rule of law in USA and I guess that's count for something.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 31 points 1 year ago

2016 me never would've believed pence would wind up adamantly the enemy of my enemy

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 30 points 1 year ago

President Hindenberg and Francis von Pappen also disavowed Hitler once they realized they were never getting power back. I'm proud of Pence for realizing he helped build a monster, I just hope the Mike Pence of 80 years from now doesn't build another.

[–] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Honestly fuck both of them. Let's not pretend that pence has the average citizens interest in mind. He's looking out for himself only

[–] kittyjynx@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

I don't agree with Mike Pence on almost anything. I don't respect much about him other than his conduct during the insurrection. He refused to get whisked away in a vehicle to god knows where and stayed in the capitol where a mob wanted to hang him to certify the election. He had physical courage at the one time he needed to and that is the one thing he has done that deserves to be recognized. Otherwise fuck him.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 year ago

But, but, but, the enemy of my enemy is... Well, at least a useful tool..

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

If that were the case, he'd just get in line to kiss the ring

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Yeah but the enemy of my enemy may not be my friend but they can be useful to ally with against our shared enemy.

Pence is awful. But I'll admit, I read him wrong a decade ago. I thought he was a Christian dominionist first and likes American democracy and the constitution if he can have it as well. But when push came to shove he turned out to actually support American democracy more than Christian dominionism, a thing he definitely still believes in. He's not a good person, but he seems to not be a fascist actually, so to him I apologize for assuming him to be one based on his prior words, actions, and general vibes.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

Fucking coward won't do shit when it matters, neither will Susan collins, murkowski or any of these fucking villains.

[–] WhatSay@slrpnk.net 17 points 1 year ago

Too little too late

[–] Tilgare@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Enough of this defeatist "too little too late" bullshit. These comments are plagued with you fucks. We need EVERY little rock we can find to get stuck in their gears. We must move forward, so we can either accept defeat or beat back the second coming of Hitler. I don't think anyone should be shamed for fighting for what's right.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Too little too late Mike. The guy tried to have you killed and you still wouldn’t campaign against him with Kamala.

[–] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

After residing in Indiana during Pence's reign, I assure you that he's no better than Trump. He's just the religious fundamentalist alternative to Trump and he's not as dumb.

[–] Digital_man@lemmy.one 13 points 1 year ago

This is like Lex Luther saying he’d challenge the Joker.

Both evil turds.

[–] chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Fuck Mike Pence. The Republicans are not going to save us. What we need is for Democrats to challenge Trump.

[–] frezik@midwest.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Democrats are failing at that, too.

Political parties of any stripe can only slow the spread of fascism, at best. Fascism found a unique vulnerability in American electoral politics, but there are plenty of right wing authoritarian parties popping up in Europe, too. Including AfD in Germany, which should theoretically be the country most inoculated against this sort of thing.

Ground up organizing of the working class is what saves us. Political parties were only ever going to be a holding action, and nothing more.

[–] chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

Apparently I wasn't clear. I think Democrats are completely feckless and failing us.

[–] Eezyville@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You think the Democrats can stand against him? They failed spectacularly during the election and many seem stubborn not wanting to change the party platform. They aren't fighting for the average person and that's why they lost.

[–] chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

I agree with you. Democrats are feckless.

[–] Slab_Bulkhead@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

this smacks of a Ringwraith showing up at Helms Deep instead of the elves.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Akctchually, it was the trees of Fangorn that showed up.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Fuck Mike Pence. He's not getting a pass because he decided to do his job for a few hours one day.

[–] averyrandomusername@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

To late. Unless I see him on every channel calling for the GOP to standup to the bully, I will continue to wish him ill

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Trump didn't quote it so he's taking full credit for the statement. That just shows you who we're dealing with. No couth
