Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Summary

Trump tried to fire Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chair Ellen Weintraub, but she is refusing to leave, arguing the move is legally invalid.

Weintraub, a Democrat and frequent Trump critic, has served since 2002 and can remain until a replacement is confirmed.

Six commissioners run the FEC, with no more than three from a single party allowed to serve at one time.

Democrats condemned the action, calling it an attack on the FEC, which is currently reviewing complaints against Trump.

The commission, often deadlocked, oversees federal election compliance.

The article is misleadingly phrased.

He “tried to fire” her. She’s obeying the law by not leaving, since he had the exact same authority to fire her that my nieces do. And there’s no “arguing” about it. She’s not arguing, she’s just ignoring his invalid order.

More federal employees should do this. Don’t just go along with his random illegal bullshit.

"Thank you Mr. Trump but as of today, your term as President is terminated."

Okay. I fired Trump. I'm just a rando from Canada, but all Trump has to do now is leave for it to work.

Thank you for your service!

This is EXACTLY how you fight fascism. You just refuse to do what they say (even when it's 'legal' what they're asking) and resist. I'm so happy and proud of Ellen Weintraub.

Resist, follow this guide (yes it's dated, you can adapt it I believe in you), refuse to go along with them.

There are two ways to help fascists: Directly, and by passively following their new laws. Don't do either.

[–] Guy6758@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Yeah fuck trump. People should just ignore him and Musk like they ignore the law

[–] errer@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

I’m curious to see how it plays out. Does he sick his corrupt justice system on her now? Forcibly bar her from the building? I mean who will stop him?

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

The news has to be extremely careful with accuracy, or they can be held liable.

Oh wait. That's just for Nazi salutes and rape. If Trump "fires" President Macron tomorrow, the news can just print "Trump fires President of France".

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

To bad that he will have security walk her out and remove her. Illegal or not, Congress is jackshit to stop him. It's fucking infuriating.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

He can't do that either, but you're right.

[–] LavaPlanet@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, there's a line being held by fed employees, they aren't moving. Bit cringe of me to refer to reddit, but there's a thread over there, for fed employees and they're talking about how to fight, they're being offered (pressured into) redundancy packages that they aren't allowed to see, until they agree to take them, but they're holding out and not taking them.

[–] coyootje@lemmy.world 194 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Lol maybe all the people he's trying to get rid of should do this, just say "no lol" and stay. Let's see what happens then.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 225 points 1 year ago (5 children)

that's literally what you're supposed to do in a situation like this. force the person breaking the system to work for it. i've been infuriated how many upper management types in the federal government have just been rolling along with the shit

[–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org 54 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I've been infuriated how many upper management types in the federal government have just been rolling along with the shit

A lot of people think we are still doing business as usual as a country, and expect there to be another election in 4 years. These kind of people don't think too deep about politics and their consequences. "Can never happen here" syndrome. They're all used to the United States just being as solid and stable as a rock, because that's what it's been all their lives. Completely unaware they are laying out a red carpet for fascism, because "fascism is just that thing we all fought in WW2 and there's no possible way we can become that too."

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 17 points 1 year ago

yup. the infuriation is… embarrassment. it's all embarrassing

Belief in American Exceptionalism runs deep

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 28 points 1 year ago

Correct.

Their goal is to, right now, move fast and break things.

You wanna be glue. Netting in their axles. Quicksand. Civil, disobedient.

"______ Resigns Under Pressure From Trump"

Fuck you, make him work for it! Make him fire you, then sue for wrongful termination! Don't just politely get out of the way so you can be replaced by some goon who will happily do the horrible thing you're resigning in protest of!

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 11 points 1 year ago

handcuff yourself to an expensive piece of office equipment if you have to

[–] whalebiologist@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

they did this last time trump was elected

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

This is different and much worse.

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I just imagine my kid telling me some crazy rule is how we do it now and me being like "aderp.. uhh. Okay cool. We stay up until 1am eating junk food playing video games and don't go to school anymore. Got it boss!"

[–] flop_leash_973@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Yeah, that sort of thinking is how they do things to boot. You aren't going to come out on top as long as you are trying to play ball with the guy that broke into your house

[–] Kalysta@lemm.ee 68 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What if, and hear me out, everyone just ignores trump. He signs his little orders and the rest of the government says “lol that’s nice” and then continues functioning as usual. Isn’t that the point of having a deep state?

Also those techbros can’t weigh more than 120 lbs. pick their bitch asses up and toss them out of the building through the nearest window.

[–] SeaJ@lemm.ee 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That is literally what many of his advisors did the first term. He would order something absolutely batshit and they knew he has the memory of a goldfish so they would ignore it.

[–] Kalysta@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

If only he were still surrounded by people who had an ounce of sanity

[–] bassomitron@lemmy.world 42 points 1 year ago

This is the type of gangster shit I like to see, versus the unpatriotic thugs that Musk's mafia have roaming around.

[–] foofiepie@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

What a perfect expression she has in that thumbnail.
