Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

One of my favorite Simpsons jokes is when bart refers to the "Fe-mailman" and lisa corrects him with "fe-mail carrier".

Surely it's fish fighter? Fisher fighter should be someone who fights people who are fishing.

[–] [email protected] 38 points 2 months ago (3 children)

The correct term is fishmonger. Like a war monger of fish, playing both sides of the battle for profit.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Doesn’t a fishmonger sell fish?

I never thought of it from that angler

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

I thought a fishmonger just sells fish?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

should be someone who fights people who are fishing.

So my mom before her and my dad divorced?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

We can't use that, viking-hippiedadfighter is too much of a mouthfull

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

That would be the life

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

No, no, a fish fighter would be just a fisher. A fisherman is a fisher fighter according to pure logic. What you are talking about is a fishman, not a fisherman.

Policemen aren't bootlickers! They wear the boot! Better call them class traitors.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 2 months ago (1 children)

i call them domestic terrorists

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago

I don't call them at all.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

They're just lost call them a cab.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This is clever as fuck and I'm stealing it

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I've been waiting 5 years for a good opportunity to use it. Feeling smug af 🤣

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

5 years well spent!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Like, as in "Hello Taxi, my wallet's been stolen"?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Oh god no, do not talk to cops.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

autobootlick

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Make the term 'man' gender neutral and make 'maleman' the new word for male humans. Then we can have 'mailmaleman'.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

but could female humans be called femaleman?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

That's more or less what it historically was

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Or just use ‘person’ instead of ‘man’. Then it doesn’t matter if someone is a person or a woperson.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 months ago (2 children)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Why not "gender neutrule"?

Is that too obvious? Is that a rule?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

seriously it was right there

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I mean, policemen being bootlickers completely breaks the pattern.

Shouldn't it be minorityfighter?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

Justicefighter.

You know, they fight justice.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago
[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago

See also, Garbage fighter: The brothers (Jake and Logan) Paul

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Garbageman is also narrow/outdated imo. Municipal worker is more accurate (but can we still have municipalfighter?)

Bloom County was so great.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Aww, now I miss this. Our last local paper that printed comics when I was a kid reran bloom county comics after they ended but they stopped when I was maybe 15 or 16.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Municipal worker just means you work for a municipality (i.e. a city/town that has its own local government). Waste management, city hall workers, people that maintain local parks etc could all be municipal workers.

You could call them wastefighters?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

I'm on board with wastefighters, somehow it gives me similar vibes to Ghostbusters lol!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago

Harvey birdfighter, lawfighter at law

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

Mailman should be fighterfighter

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I guess Femailman isn't exactly gender neutral but it always makes me laugh

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Well he’s not wearing iron chainmail.
