I've been posting quite a bit to !science@mander.xyz instead of !science@lemmy.world as well

Edit:

Oh and sometimes I post to !moviesandtv@lemmy.film because I like the domain for that instance LMAO

Sorry, but it's the same than for feddit.org, they went down like 2 years ago...

I even posted about it 4 months ago! https://lemmy.world/post/20273021

[–] m_f@discuss.online 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Lemmy could do a lot better job of showing that a community is on a dead instance. Here's an issue about warning when posting to defederated instances, which could be considered the same issue: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/2680

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 10 months ago (2 children)

It definitely could. Can instances lock down remote communities?

@kersploosh@lemmy.world maybe?

[–] m_f@discuss.online 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I don't see a way to simply lock it down as an admin. I see "Remove" and "Purge community" which both seem to be too nuclear, I assume they'd delete the comm history too.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 months ago

That's unfortunate

[–] Nothing4You@programming.dev 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure it's doable but it might be necessary to become a mod first, which admins should be able to in remote communities as well iirc. it's just that their mod actions won't federate.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 months ago

Would probably be enough

[–] pseudo@jlai.lu 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I really need to tell you how much I like your profile picture. Does Lemmy allow the use of GIF?

[–] m_f@discuss.online 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Thanks! Yeah, Lemmy allows for GIFs. Maybe they shouldn't, because of people like me :)

[–] pseudo@jlai.lu 2 points 10 months ago

Oh no! They should. It is so cool. You stand out in conversation, not just because it is moving but because that is a very nice profil picture.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Oh got dammit! Are there any other instances you know of that's down for the count?

Also, fucking fuck GoDaddy, almost 5 grand now‽ Effectively ensures no one else can start an instance at that domain either >:(

[–] Nothing4You@programming.dev 2 points 10 months ago

you shouldn't reuse domains on the fediverse for a new instance anyway, subdomains are fine though: https://programming.dev/comment/14173239

Are there any other instances you know of that’s down for the count?

For a while people were still posting to the lemmy.world copy of synthwave@waveform.social even though waveform.social died. So someone just made a "this community is dead" post.

https://lemmy.world/c/synthwave@waveform.social

edit: there used to be a lemmy.villa-straylight.social instance as well which had a cyberpunk community on it. The corpse: https://lemmy.world/c/cyberpunk@lemmy.villa-straylight.social

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Well, yiffit and Lemmy.autism.place are going out soon, but that should be it. Maybe we should have a community with archived instances

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

While scrolling to find my posts on lemmy.film to crosspost elsewhere I checked in on some posts on !startrek@possumpat.io and apparently possumpat.io is shutting down soon to :(

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 months ago

It is indeed

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 months ago

I can't believe we missed your content on !showsandmovies@lemm.ee because you thought !moviesandtv@lemmy.film was still online 😔

[–] coacoamelky@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Hey I'm new here but what's the problem with lemmy.worls?

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

lemmy.world is the largest Lemmy instance by far and is causing growing concern that it's causing the Lemmy-verse to become too centralized and strangling out smaller instances either intentionally (if .world defed's from your instance you immediately start losing out on a ton of content/traffic) or unintentionally (people just post there by default leaving little content for other instances)

So now there's ongoing efforts to try to balance things out a bit

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

First of all, welcome!

There are a few main issues:

  1. Slowness for some users: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/36299751

  2. Lack of updates on LW. At this moment, LW users still can't delete media they uploaded. That was a big deal in March 2024: https://tech.michaelaltfield.net/2024/03/04/lemmy-fediverse-gdpr/. Since then, Lemmy allows it since 0.19.4, but LW still runs 0.19.3 (there are plans to update, but at the moment we're speaking, it's still not the case)

  3. Power tripping of some LW mods. You can have a look at !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com , with one example: https://lemm.ee/post/49988344/17418849?sort=New

  4. Smaller instances can have issues to keep up with LW due to its size: https://lemm.ee/post/28755787 . Again, those issues were fixed in 0.19.6, but LW is still on 0.19.3.

  5. LW tend to take some debatable policies (https://lemm.ee/post/30444527), the last one being about allowing flat-earthers in the debates: https://lemm.ee/post/52282379. Due to their size, this impacts basically the whole platform.

[–] Nothing4You@programming.dev 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

that post on lemm.ee in your first point is dead

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 months ago

Yes, because the !asklemmy@lemmy.world mod removed it as a "support question".

Pasting the content here:

Most recent example:

the site (or at least lemmy.world) is sooo slooow. Basic functions like loading images take me back to the dial-up era of “click the image then do something else while it loads,” which is downright ridiculous in the 2020s. Again I’ve stuck with it because I want to support the fediverse, but 99% of users won’t.

https://lemmy.world/comment/14645438

Additional example

It also doesn’t help that it’s slow as fuck on desktop compared to the others I tried.

Is lemm.ee much faster than lemmy.world for you?

Yes, MUCH. Sh.itjust.works is much faster as well. I don’t know if it’s because LW is still on 0.19.3 or what, but it’s a very significant difference.

So slow unfortunately

How would one pull and pool all of these communities into a given feed? Bonus if you can filter dupes.

[–] Letstakealook@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

I blocked world awhile back due to their abusive "power mods," so I like to see this recent push to distribute content among other instances.

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The moral panic about tankies is a waste of time that distracts from focusing on the elites destroying our planet and emiserating the lives of disadvantaged communities.

Ignore the tankies, mock the fascists.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Ignore the tankies, mock the fascists.

Part of that is not contributing to the growth of their spaces and/or calling for the Fediverse at large to defed from them

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Creating memes mocking them is not ignoring. Encourage people not to buy from amazon or post on facebook instead.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

While that's admirable, you gotta tailor your "calls to action"s (ig is what they're called") to where you're at.

Here on Lemmy the biggest issues are the tankies, posting about people not buying from Amazon or posting on FB on Lemmy isn't really effective because most of the people here already likely do that. Those kinda posts would be more effective in someplace like Reddit where that's far more common and Tankies are far less common

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club -3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It really is just one person screaming this divisive BS over and over huh

[–] Comment105@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago

Nope, a lot of us have issues with Putin defending Tienanmen Square Massacre loving Stalin stans.

As a Norwegian I've always hated Americans who see our country and our neighbors and think "We'd rather go Soviet, go farther, be stricter, be more violent. We'd rather learn from Marx than you. We don't want socialism unless it feels like a cult, and disowns questioning heretics like a cult"
