Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

Me when languages from different groups have different words for an object

Actually, English is a Germanic language. However, you are right that this specific word in English is not Germanic.

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 32 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Most words in English aren't.

[–] janNatan@lemmy.ml 28 points 1 year ago

Those damn French.

[–] rockerface@lemm.ee 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

English is a chimera that ate the faces of 3 other languages and wears their skins

[–] Hjalamanger@feddit.nu 81 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Handskar, I stand with the Germans on this one

[–] spankinspinach@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I know it's not likely, but I REALLY like the idea of "handcar"

[–] squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 1 year ago (3 children)

It's not exactly handcar, but "vehicle" in german is "drivething" (Fahrzeug).

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 14 points 1 year ago

I love how they jam words together to make new words. As I understand it, German is easier to learn because the bigger words are made of smaller words glued together instead of creating new words with no clues. I got this from a book on the history of the English language, which I will again promote because it was so fun to read:

Highly Irregular: Why Tough, Through, and Dough Don't Rhyme and Other Oddities of the English Language

Plane is Fly Thing (Flugzeug)

[–] spankinspinach@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You know, I know just enough German to have wondered how -zeug fit into things and now I know and I'm pretty happy about drive and fly things πŸ˜‚

Are you also happy about play things (toys), fire things (lighters), hit things (drums), work things (tools) and green things (greenery)?

[–] vonxylofon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Okay well yes when you point out the obvious and valid English word handcar I see how this is a dumb comment haha

[–] subarctictundra@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

See I'd much prefer one woth pedals, like a bike.

[–] vonxylofon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I don't think it would be very practical. It's so heavy you have to use your entire body weight to get it going.

[–] siipale@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 year ago

I didn't realize I've been saying "hand shoes" all my life. Finnish word hanskat obviously comes from Swedish handskar. Maybe I should say kΓ€sineet instead so it would have nothing to do with shoes.

[–] M137@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Har undrat vad "skar" betyder i ordet. Hand Γ€r ju sjΓ€lvklart men inte hittat nΓ₯got om vad skar menar eller brukade mena.

[–] Johandea@feddit.nu 7 points 1 year ago
[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 45 points 1 year ago

If it weren't for all that Latin and French influence, we'd still be calling them handshoes, too.

[–] ArtieShaw@fedia.io 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Once you can wrap your head around Handshuhe, Fingerhut becomes obvious. "Ah, so this is how this is going to go."

[–] JackFrostNCola@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Following that logic then how about Penis-Regenmantel?

[–] rustyricotta@lemmy.ml 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Japanese: 手蒋 = Tebukuro = Hand bag/sack

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

mittens should be handbags

handbags should be, uh, just bags?

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago

Handbags are just bags in Japanese, but a different bag word: ιž„ (kaban)

[–] fushuan@lemm.ee 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Eskularruak.

I prefer to call my gloves handfurs thankyouverymuch

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

To handle furries better, smart, I just use work gloves tho.

I mean, the German has a point

[–] Rooskie91@discuss.online 8 points 1 year ago

It's almost like they have different root languages

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

Then a wild ΠΏΠ΅Ρ€Ρ‡Π°Ρ‚ΠΊΠΈ (perchatki) appeared.
