You have ads on Lemmy? yuck

None here using all open source means to access.

To my knowledge lemmy.world doesn't have personalized algorithms. just some odd people, like everywhere

He's using Boost, so it's his own fault. It's just your standard ad network crap.

I'm using boost, I've not got any ads?

Looking trough the settings, there's no way to turn ads off or on, and no payment for them. Just a voluntary donate button.

Did you pay for it? Or it could be regional

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Looks like there's no option to pay to remove ads, just a donation button.

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I believe there's a donation button after paying for it. If you didn't pay for boost then there are ads inter-stitched.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Then I must've paid, thanks for figuring that out!

Same. I don't remember paying for it, but I know donated through the Reddit version, so it would make sense that I would have also purchased the lemmy version if I was given the option.

I just like using Boost because I can have the exact same interface between both Reddit and Lemmy. The Reddit version was removed from the Play store, though, so I needed to side-load it when I switched to this new phone. Still works, though.

It was removed because the dev has to pay for your use of the api. And I think reddit also just removed a bunch of api endpoints.

I don't know, how can I check?

[–] Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Do you have dns-based adblock? That reliably stops boost from fetching and displaying those.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago

I use cloudlfare dns, those dns blockers break some websites

I don't understand why people use apps instead of web interface...

That the apps serve ads makes it even more confusing

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Because the web ui sucks, imo

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

“Sucks” is generous. Maybe it’s passable on desktop?

Also there are apps without ads.
In fact I didn’t know there were apps with ads before this post.

[–] momocchi@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I use an app (Voyager) and have no ads, they just chose one with ads for some reason

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Im just used to it from reddit. Its comfy

[–] jasep@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

If you're interested in trying an app with no ads, I'm using Thunder and it's great. Cross platform for Android and iOS.

[–] PlantJam@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The ad free upgrade for boost is only a few dollars. I don't remember if it's done through the app or the play store, though.

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I might. Ads are pretty unintrusive on lemmy, but these caught my eye

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 year ago

Jerboa, Raccoon etc dont do ads(get them.from F sroid) . Boost does if you don't buy it.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Nah the ad solution being utilized by the Boost app thinks that. Not Lemmy.

Could be you're using a VPN throwing off where it thinks you're located, you have some specific intersection of browsing history and interests, your search history, some other criteria I probably don't know because I don't actually work in that industry.

Anyways, usually there is a reason even if it's silly.

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is a targeted ad based on your browsing history from your IP address. You may read or search a lot of things related to Israel, which could be why this shows up.

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't though that's the thing. I have no interest in current affairs.

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Maybe then some weird algorithm is pushing some weird stuff onto people who have no special interests?

[–] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

I’ve blocked ads for so long that I don’t recognize the logo in the corner anymore, but that’s the ad provider for the app you’re using. It probably has a profile of you based on what’s going on around every place their ads are shown and on other trackery things. So not just your activity in one app.

Advertising seems to be against the spirit of Lemmy in general, I’d be upset even if the ad wasn’t this gross. I’m using Voyager and I’ve never seen an ad.
