Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s former opponent in the U.S. Senate primary, Haley Stevens, stunned party officials Sunday by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers after Democratic tensions boiled over days before the election that could determine the balance of power on Capitol Hill.

Stevens endorsed Rogers after attending a Detroit church service with him. The remarkable show of support for Donald Trump’s backed candidate in the tightly contested race comes after she was uninvited to a joint event the same day with El-Sayed, who defeated the congresswoman by a slim margin in the August primary.

“Our Democratic nominee for Senate said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Stevens said video announcing the endorsement. “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”

Already kicked out of the party.

This is the chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 39 points 5 days ago

The video on that article had a great response from El-Sayed at the end, when the press was asking about his response to questions about Stevens and if he knew about her endorsement ahead of time. He basically said he understands that getting answers like that it what drives clicks but ultimately it doesn't matter at all, and that he wished the press would focus on issues the local electorate cares about like prices and wages.

This should be top. Already rightfully expelled.

All the people bellyaching at the top should take note- blue no matter who and proven.

[–] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 23 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I don't know that I've personally been bellyaching about the top, but as someone who refuses to donate to the Dem party and only donates to candidates directly, this is really great to see. I've been disappointed in the past by the party's behavior, and this is the kind of behavior I need to see in order to be brought back into the fold.

So basically what the establishment democrats did to Mamdani here in NYC. Gotcha.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 121 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Democrats would rather dance with Nazis than back progressives in their own party

[–] spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.works 75 points 5 days ago (9 children)

You know who dances with Nazis?

Nazis.

They know how the saying goes, if they sit at that table with the Nazis, they're Nazis, and we'll remember that when the dust settles.

The DNC/establishment democrats need to go, they do not form coalitions in good faith.

edit obviously vote for al-sayed regardless

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 18 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Man, you guys are trying real fucking hard. Known shitbag has sour grapes and turns and suddenly she represents 85% of the democratic party.

  1. Get Republicans and Neo-Nazis out.
  2. Fix Citizens United
  3. Fix the Neolib/Corporate part of the Democratic Party.

One comes first. Haley Stevens being a shitbag doesn't change that.

I would love nothing more than for Republicans to be rendered irrelevant and for the two parties to be replaced by the DSA and the neolibs. Just be a little strategic in how you go about that. (I worry you are being strategic, and it's not for the benefit of DSA.)

You are right. We have to get the Neo Nazis out. But how many of todayz Democrats are pro-ICE, pro-genocide?

We have to recognize that we got to this point by compromising. Compromising with Reagan. Compromising with corporations. Compromising with genocide. "A fundamental restructuring of economic, political, social and religious institutions" is long overdue. If it is relegated to low priority, even for a 'short term', things will not get better.

No endorsement from Gov. Hochel.

No endorsement from either NY Senator.

Disgraced former Govener Andrew Cuomo running as a spoiler candidate.

Andrew Cuomo being endorsed by Trump in the 11th hour of the election over the Republican candidate.

Yep.

That should make everyone who voted for El-Sayed positively sure that they made the right choice. A vote for Stevens would have accomplished fucking NOTHING. She is one of those greaseball representatives who does not represent her constituents, but acts solely in her own best interests. (Bribes)

I don't live in Michigan, but I donate $10-15 a month to the competitive Democrats running for Senate. I usually hate those fundraising emails and prefer to donate on my own.

But I got one from El-Sayed after this bullshit and sent him $50. Fuck Stevens. Apparently helping Israel bomb children is more important than keeping Donald Trump from destroying our democracy. And she has the gall to say after her endorsement, "I'm still a proud Democrat." Go fuck yourself.

Democrats need to take some responsibility for the perception that they are not meaningfully different from nazis.

Haley Stevens may as well be working out of a GRU information warfare center in moscow, since she's basically russian propaganda in action.

[–] supersquirrel@lemmy.ca 42 points 5 days ago

Especially because leftists and progressives have been pointing this out over and over again while centrist establishment democrats condescended us.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 29 points 5 days ago (2 children)

My friend if you think Russia is behind Haley Stevens wait until you hear about this country called Israel and the money they’ve been openly throwing around this election.

Saying "Democrats" as a blanket statement isn't fair. Mahmdani and El Sayed are both democrats. How about holding the individuals responsible.

[–] Cheese_man@lemmy.world 20 points 5 days ago (1 children)

They're democrats by necessity, though, and not embraced by or representative of the party establishment.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 21 points 5 days ago (5 children)

The party is changing, and these types of candidates are evidence of that.

Wow what a shitty reason to endorse someone.

Childish as fuck.

Edit: also, am I crazy or is El-Sayed not even a leftist? Dude is literally a landlord. So much of this is just veiled racism.

The Overton Window in this country is so fucked.

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 days ago

He has clarified when asked that he is a capitalist. But there's a solid enough contingent of the American electorate that thinks tax systems are a leftwing policy.

church service with him.

uninvited to a joint event

defeated the congresswoman ... in primary.

Sounds like sour grapes and othering.

[–] nomoredreaddit@lemmy.world 20 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Yes, I was curious to how much was 'sour grapes'' -that she did not have the maturity, or dedication to democracy, to at the very least just shut her stupid mouth- or she is simply pro radical Zionist. It could be a combination of both. I hope the democratic party permanently 86's her from the party, as there is plenty of room in the republican party for fragile ego's; egos that prefer retribution for bring defeated, to the good of the people of their own country. She is a spectacular, POS.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 23 points 4 days ago

She says she is doing it for "country". Everyone thinks that country is Israel.

When I stopped laughing because El-Sayed has inadvertently flushed out another pretender just by being himself, I realized I wasn't surprised.

Stevens' fiance has been stumping for Mike Rogers all along, and while people of differing politics can and do get married, it takes a LOT of passion to go out and actually work for a candidate, which he did and still is. For me, it's not so much a red flag as a question mark.

But then there was the ad that attacked her own side, and its follow-up of her desperately trying to make something out of nothing, low-key harassing El-Sayed until he simply disinvited her to his upcoming event.

And now, the day of his event and standing outside, she's thrown off her cloak and shown her real allegiance.

If you look at what she has said and what she has brought, it's pretty clear she was only ever a Republican in a Dem suit anyway.

tensions boiled over days before the election

Yeah, no. That's a very fact neutral, implied "both sides" way of saying she kept trying to throw El-Sayed off his game until he threw her out, and now she's just attacking openly. Not a lot has really changed here.

Now I'm wondering how much cash I'd bet on finding out her campaign was planned to this end all along: to either win and then switch sides, or to lose explosively before the election in such a way that it cratered her opponent's chances.

In the end it doesn't look like she's succeeded in anything at all, beyond showing her own true colors.

Wow, she might have either fucked over her own party out of spite or fucked over her own political career.

[–] trevor@lemmy.blahaj.zone 54 points 5 days ago (1 children)

She'll have a consulting job on the reich-wing media circuit in no time. Her career will be fine.

[–] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 30 points 5 days ago

"I was a Democrat unti those antisemites pushed me out! That's why I support our Fuhrer now!"

[–] mpa92643@lemmy.world 34 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I get it was a bitter primary. I get she has strong feelings about certain foreign policy issues.

But holy shit, she will be unwelcomed anywhere in Democratic politics forever with this BS. If El-Sayed wins, maybe people will forget in a few years. But if he narrowly loses, she will be a pariah forever. Has she deluded herself into thinking everyone will still talk to her and this will be just a minor point of disagreement they just avoid in their chats?

And it will surprise nobody that she'll go independent and make friends with all the right wing fascists just like John Fetterman. It's all about her and the attention she's going to get from it.

I'm very confused on what's happening here. Not that another establishment not-Democrat went full mask off, but of the odd timeline of this.

So this woman lost the primary months ago to Abdul El-Sayed. She stays quiet and/or pushes milquetoast support for the progressive Democrat for those months, even though it's clear she's full on AIPAC supported and has a conservative husband.

Then these last few days, well after a lot of Michigan already voted with early polls, she decides "fuck it we ball" and outwardly and directly decides to endorse the GOP candidate on the ballot? Did something happen behind the scenes? Did she have a mental break? The strategy makes no sense from a sabetour perspectives behind the scenes (she went mask off too early... 2 days too early) nor from a campaign perspective (she went mask off WAY too late for it to matter for the GOP candidate). This can't have been strategic.

Zionist occupation of the Democratic party has a long history that does not seem to be very well understood by the general public.

Remember, this is not real news. She's a loser. She lost. She means nothing, and her opinion means nothing. And that's OK, no worries, it happens in politics... But the pundits want to make it an issue so voters forget about the issues that matter (health care, education, clean water, ending wars, etc.).

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

She's sadly not nothing (yet). She still has 2 months in House and there can potentially be some last minute bills she screws over.

in 2 months, sure. She's nothing and she can fade into history as yet another turncoat in America's descent into fascism.

I will never understand how, so called, Americans will unabashedly suck up to Israel this hard.
Killing Jews is wrong.
Killing Palestinians is equally wrong.
Knowing how Israel has been mistreating Palestinians for years makes me wonder how any government would continue to support Israel with anything beyond food and medicine?
