This is my Halloween costume. I'm going as Flavaflock, the specter of mass surveillance, all 3D printed and painted by myself. Its art... ish

[–] whyderrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

It's ART! Thanks for sharing! It's fucking awesome.

[–] Rockrolito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yo! I can post here a little thing I did

[–] whyderrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

lovely! thanks for sharing :)

I'll be honest-- if you posted more classic fine arts, then I'd be more motivated. Look at the earlier posts here by Snoken to see examples of what that looks like.

I don't have a problem with anyone posting amateur doodles here from time to time, but when that's all you're posting, then it's pretty hard to care about this sub, as awesome as the premise was. I don't know where Snoken is this days, but I presume busy.

Me, I actually have posted here in the past, but I'm not sure how to look those posts up.

art is not a zero sum game, and you don't lose anything by sharing a forum. you lose a lot by outing yourself as a snob though. sorry for calling you a snob but you'll get no flowers for calling me an amateur. you may not appreciate the depth of my work, that's on you, unfortunately.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 3 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Amateur as in not a professional, correct? If so, then that would be the same as me... i.e. not a professional. So, no-- by the same token, if I wanted to share my art here, I'd only do it sparingly, in the spirit of which this sub was established. Does that make me a "snob" against my own art? According to you, I guess it does.

you may not appreciate the depth of my work

It's not about that. It's about the frequency of the shares, as I explained above.

Sorry you took my feedback so hard, but it was constructively intended. You seemed to make this post in order to get responses, and there's my response-- if you posted more in the spirit of the sub, then I'd be willing to start posting again. Simple.

I made this post to incite artists to share their work. You took it as a chance to.. assume i'm looking for responses. You shared no work, took your chance to call me an amateur and ask for me to post less. On a budding community. You come here to the people contributing and tell them to go elsewhere, and then have the gall to talk about "having no engagement". Connect two.

I made this post to incite artists to share their work. You took it as a chance to.. assume i’m looking for responses.

Unless you're very, very new to the internet, then you should know that anything shared is liable to get any kind of response, and it's often not going to be quite what you want. You can't herd cats, so to speak.

You shared no work, took your chance to call me an amateur and ask for me to post less.

Like I said, I have indeed shared my work here and would be willing to do so again if more fine art was posted here. At no point did I ask you to post less, but I did mention that if the spirit of the sub was once again adhered to, then I'd be willing to contribute more.

You come here to the people contributing and tell them to go elsewhere, and then have the gall to talk about “having no engagement”.

If you go back to my original comment I'm saying no so things. This all seems to be about you feeling personally attacked even though I didn't pitch it that way. What do you mean "having no engagement," anyway?

I’m not keen to be called an amateur. By your definition I’m a professional. By mine I’m an artist.

If you're selling your art on a regular basis, then yeah... I'd call you a professional by definition. If not, then an amateur. And we're all artists, either way.

I don’t see why my sharing generously makes any impact on how you share

Well, I can only explain it so many times. I'm making no demands and not judging anyone. You'll notice I didn't judge any of your previous art contributions, and I will make sure not to do so in future, since you seem to feel very attacked.

And I can find other art communities to share to, so that's me sorted. No worries, no fuss... you just keep right on doing what you're doing, since it seems to make you happy. 👍

Hey dude. Your art is still welcome. Me no words for you anymore. Only art. IF art, I respond, else, Ignore. HAve a good one.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Well, thank you very much for the kind offer!

I do remember sharing a page on the Fediverse a couple years ago. There were these kids who would visit our cafe and doodle things in my sketchbook, and later I'd try to riff on that, turning them it in to different art-styles. You can see one half-finished example of that here:

Me no words for you anymore.

As someone with a Cookie Monster hand puppet, me will always have words for you... especially if you have cookie to donate?

(hahaha...one of favorite things is walking around the local farmer's market, working the puppet and doing the voice XD)

Thanks for answering the summons. I am an art anarchist (you can tell from my work). Everyone can make great art in my book, and it very rarely has to do with technique or style (in my world) it's always about ecspressivity. More so, in my opinion, technique is more often an obstacle than anything else. Not because it's without value, but because I've seen it cut the wings off too many artists.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The 'anarchist' part seems to jibe. And I'm personally on board with your art philosophies to a certain extent.

That said, it does seem like there was a certain breakdown of logic and self-awareness when it came to your initial reaction.

I mean, you're posting (some may say "spamming") your personal stuff in a sub with a well-established backstory and tradition of examining fine art and classical art with great respectfulness. You then put out a general call for others and clearly get upset when I describe your stuff as being "amateur doodles."

Buddumpity-bump!

Now for sure, I wish I'd chosen my words better, as they were clearly unhelpful. At the same time, I can almost *guarantee* you that many folks won't really understand what you're trying to aim for exactly, and will pretty much think of your stuff in those exact same terms.

That said, even if one's art is universally slick and 99% impressive to general audiences, I still don't think it's great to share that and nothing more to a sub like this. To me it's almost like saying "I don't really give a shit about other artists or what came before. It's just all about me." Which I'm guessing isn't really how you personally feel, but impressions can nevertheless be a motherfucker.

[–] whyderrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sure thing. Thanks for clarifying. Since I make a lot of art and like to share it, instead of sharing less, i tried to prompt the community to share more. I don't want to stop neither sharing nor producing.

I shared at the same frequency over at reddit with.. no issue (other than.. well.. reddit), mostly since a lot of people post everyday. I want a fediverse where my frequency isn't spamming, and that's what i'm trying to build.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sure, that's understandable.
And the more I respond to these issues, the more I feel like a gatekeeping-shithead, in general. And no question about it-- I find that your graphics / photo mashups are pretty cool IMO!

I shared at the same frequency over at reddit with.. no issue

Right, but it comes down to specific communities. Just as always, and across specific platforms. That's just how THAT works, for better or wurst.

For example, there are some subs that are all about original art, and some which attempt to (mostly) summon up the fascinating history of art... like this one.

'Snoken' isn't here these days for whatever reasons, but I feel like he'd want to help you share more classical art, if he was. Not just our own homegrown art, which for sure is legit art as well. But more like what I'm saying.

I'm going to shut up now, since I feel like a total asshole. I've said whatever constructively-intended things I aimed for, totally bumbling the message, most likely.

Good luck, and ciao, baby.

[–] whyderrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Hey.. uh.. .. you made me reconsider.. Maybe I'm harming this community.

I don't know of the history of art, nor anything about fine arts. So.. perhaps i should go elsewhere. Thanks for showing me the door. I'm out.

[–] whyderrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

off you go sweetie.

[–] whyderrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 days ago

I'm not keen to be called an amateur. By your definition I'm a professional. By mine I'm an artist. My art confronts people with the need for usefulness and the value of "academic" art. I got sick of the assholes over at reddit so i took down all my art and sought another community to share. I like to share my art. I don't see why my sharing generously makes any impact on how you share, but I will not stop sharing just because you don't like my frequency of sharing or whatever.

[–] whyderrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

sorry that my capacity to create shitty art impacts your capacity to create and share "good" art. the amateur doodle. so powerful it eclipses the real talent. a shame.

[–] WhatISawInTheForest@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Ok I'll bite. But it's something i already posted in another sub. Later I'll look through some old sketchbooks and find something worth posting.

[–] WhatISawInTheForest@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Whelp, my image isn't playing nice in a new post. I'll ask one of the younger folks for some help later. Mibby it will work here.

[–] whyderrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago

Thanks for sharing! I really really like it.. it'.. ecsactly my kinda art (sorry ecs key broke) To me it screams .... war / atomic bomb / comic aesthetic. I really like the whiplash.
