Recently saw an old video of Adam Lanza (school shooter) playing dance dance revolution really well. I had seen it forever ago but recently stumbled on it again. Without context it's just some skinny kid crushing it at DDR. But, with hindsight its one of the most uncomfortable videos to watch I can think of. So, media of any kind that isn't inherently a problem but with additional context becomes freaky.

Alter your perspective a bit. That video shows the duality of the human condition. Everybody has multiple sides. Wife beaters can be wonderful to their dogs, or excellent mentors at work. We are all capable of incredible charity and cruelty at the same time.
Look at it not as a creepy video of someone that did something wrong, but instead a sad video showing the lost human potential that was corrupted by some force in his life.

Yes... that's exactly why it makes me so uncomfortable.

Being comfortable with ambiguity is a life skill

lol people downvoting reality. Sorry life is ambiguous and the sooner you figure that out and learn to cope the easier it gets

Evil is banal. And, actually, good tends to be quiet, as well.

"Skyrim in Real Life" series by JinnKid

The guy shot his his wife and her friend, murder. The wife is heard filming the videos, the gun he used is sometimes visible in the videos.

[–] saaaaagard@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 days ago

No shit. I used to love his videos back when he was first getting big. Freaaaaky....

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 13 points 6 days ago

Crime zone has a whole series on exactly this. Some innocent looking footage like a guy closing his garage door, and then with further context it takes on a whole different meaning.

A whole lot of normal, popular media ends up having pretty disturbing messages and biases baked in.

For example, most historical fiction is going to whitewash the past in order to have likeable (to a modern audience) characters. Another one: movies about authority figures tend to have them causally doing crimes, or war crimes.

It's not even a deliberate propaganda thing (with a few notable exceptions). Entertainment and pandering is the main business, whatever message comes second. And, producers come from a certain background with certain biases, which is why realistic depictions of poverty, or even lower middle class life, are super rare.

Two female, a fecal matter, and a large mug

Not sure you're understanding the question unless your definition of innocuous is wildly different then mine.

[–] Pika@hikki.team 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Well, the original name is "Two Girls One Cup"

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

We know but like that wasn't innocent or anything at first watch. You can't see it, think its fine/normal/cute/whatever and then find out more information and be kinda disgusted.

Think like seeing Hitlers paintings and thinking they're pretty, then finding out who made them.

A man standing over a jar

Not something I've read personally, but I imagine there's someone out there who's read the Unabomber's mathematics work without Realizing

[–] noobface@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Anything on the BBC in the 70s and 80s.

[–] EponymousBosh@feddit.online 5 points 6 days ago

I guess on a similar note, anything from Nickelodeon in the 90s.

The Wizard of Oz, because of what the actors, especially Judy Garland, went through.

The Shining, because of how Kubrick treated Shelley Duvall.

Powder and Jeepers Creepers, because of how Victor Salva emphatically put his own predilections into his work.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ha! Some dumbass jumped in the tiger enclosure! Get mauled, nerd!

Learns context... Oh. Fuck... Damn.

[–] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

OK, you gotta elaborate on this one.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Senior coroner Nicola Mundy said he had a history of mental illness, a diagnosis of schizophrenia and had suffered previous bouts of psychosis. His family had raised concerns about his contact with Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Trust, the hearing was told.

[–] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 days ago

So buddy had a bunch of mental health issues and committed accidental suicide by big cat in a psychotic episode? If so, damn, that's a gnarly way to go out.

[–] PragmaticOne@lemmy.world -5 points 6 days ago

Look on the BBC website.

watched a video of a man butchering a pig while naked.

it wasn't a pig...

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Not sure that's innocuous to start with. I mean, I'd expect at the very least you need to wear a hairnet.

[–] Octavio@piefed.social 3 points 6 days ago

Pretty sure there's surveillance video of a guy in Boston forgetting his backpack in 2013. Minutes later, three people were dead and hundreds injured in the Boston Marathon bombing.

The earlier videos from Ember's Ghost Squad on YouTube. Largely innocuous videos from a fan of a Danny Phantom character who would end up committing a mass shooting at their job.

Yoteslaya as well. Didn't commit a mass shooting, but suddenly stopped uploading, and it came out that they ended up playing chicken with a train, and losing. Iirc there were 4 people in the car?
