A bipartisan group of six senators on Sunday called for Donald Trump’s administration to “immediately reverse course” on a plan to purchase diesel from Russia as part of an effort to lower high fuel prices.

Trump shocked lawmakers when he announced on social media Friday that he struck a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call. He said Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global market, followed by an additional 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons “immediately thereafter.” Russia will deliver an additional 3 million tons “within a short period of time” after that, he wrote.

Four Republican senators and two Democratic senators signed onto the statement released Sunday in protesting the deal. They said the administration failed to consult with Congress or submit any explanation to justify its decision as required by statute.

And bipartisan! Surely this will send a message

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Literally it was a message they sent. Next I suppose they're going to do something about it.

[–] nightwatch_admin@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Look I get it, but for the moment let’s be glad these six are doing something.. a lot more than the absolute nothing - or bootlicking - the others are doing.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm skeptical of any republican that has had the opportunity to keep Trump in check, but has not. This feels like an attempt to make them look better before rhe midterms.

[–] nightwatch_admin@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

You’re probably not wrong

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

let’s be glad these six are doing something

No. This is LITERALLY the least they can do apart from nothing. And 94 senators aren't even doing THAT much.

That's as worthy of celebration as Mitch McConnell completing a sentence without having a stroke or Hakeem Jeffries neglecting to call a common sense progressive candidate with more popular policy positions than himself "dangerous" or "extreme left".

[–] nightwatch_admin@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah it’s this bad, I know. It’s not that I disagree (although it’s probably dangerous to even do this under Trump), and I’m definitely not celebrating. Still, I believe complaining should now start with the other 94.

I sure hope it was strongly worded.

Alternative headline:

94 senators in favor of or indifferent towards heavily sponsoring the war crimes of a geopolitical adversary.

It's not as snappy but more relevant to the state of things

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

94 senators in favor of or indifferent towards heavily sponsoring the war crimes of a geopolitical adversary.

94? Dems hold 47 seats and their actions have been carte blanche in favor of Ukraine. So, their position is well known. Its 49 Republican senators that act indifferent.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

their position is well known

Yet their silence amidst the most blatant act of favoritism of the second Trump infestation is deafening.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

You think the message will have more of an effect if it's signed by 46 Dems and 4 Republicans?

There's a calculated weight to assuring that the Republican signatures outweigh Democrat ones

Syphilitic old shitstain betrayed the U.S., E.U and Ukraine in a single phone call.

six ? that's... disappointing

[–] arc99@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Imagine if he just struck a real deal with Iran. This crisis, of Trump's own making would resolve itself.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 days ago

Oh oh. trump is going to be in big trouble for not consulting congress. This is the one thing that they absolutely will not stand for. /s

[–] Shayeta@feddit.org 10 points 4 days ago

It's performative. Russia doesn't produce nearly enough disel to satisfy US needs.

This is so that when Ukraine inevitably blows up more Russian refineries Trump can withdraw whatever support is left for Ukraine.

[–] neidu4@piefed.social 14 points 5 days ago (4 children)

300k tonnes of diesel isn't that much in the grand scheme of things.

[–] thallamabond@lemmy.world 44 points 5 days ago (2 children)

In 2025, distillate (or diesel) fuel consumption (excluding biodiesel and renewable diesel) by the U.S. transportation sector was about 2.94 million barrels per day, or about 123 million gallons per day.

123,000,000 gallons per day. Diesel weighs 7 pounds per gallon so 861,000,000 pounds or 430,500 tons per day.

This first shipment will not cover 1 days fuel cost. But what it will do is give a big pile of money to Putin.

[–] Maiq@piefed.zip 13 points 5 days ago

Just bought the midterms with taxpayer money.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Wait that means...

Thats about $500m of diesel purchase.

Essentially that's a transfer of $500m cash to Putin. Putin is collecting dues.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 11 points 5 days ago

But it's enough for them to blame the Dems when things aren't magically fixed after they win in the Midterms. The idiots eat that shit up because they have absolutely no idea how a national economy works. Republican economic policies are consistently bad for everyone that's not in the 1% and yet they vote for them all the time because they're told told policies are good for them, regardless of the reality they deal with daily.

[–] tburkhol@slrpnk.net 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I feel like that's the worst part of this: he's undermined what had been a reasonably unified international campaign for what, like 2 days of diesel?

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Not even a single day's worth. It's less than the transportation sector uses in a day.

[–] PMP@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago

Even if they had it loaded it would be 3 weeks away.

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Here is my thing. How in the world is JD Vance not quietly building support for the 25th? Like that might be the only thing that could save them in the election.

But even if they still plan on cheating, Trump is literally nothing more than a liability at this point.

[–] spongebue@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I mean, if we knew he was doing it, it wouldn't be so quiet. Too much of his cabinet (which would need to vote for it) are unwavering Trump sycophants, but maybe there are enough not-Pete-Hegseths that he could pull it off.

But for Vance's own sake, he may be best off waiting until after midterms/inauguration in case he needs to cut any deals with the next Congress.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Plus if he gets in after midterms he can serve two more terms (theoretically).

Probably because Vance has to be one of the most unpopular people ever. Seriously, they're hanging on because of the cult like devotion to trump. Nix him and go to Vance? Their support drops from high 20s to sub 10s

[–] logi@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Wouldn't doing that with less than half a term left mean that he could then only be elected for one term? So to maximize his own (and Thiel's) potential power, he'd want to do it right after January 20th. IANAL and obviously IADNACL.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

If Vance was plotting this, the 25th is not the way to go. He would need to get half the Cabinet on board, and then when Trump inevitably challenges it it would take 2/3 vote in both houses to toss Trump out.

It would be much better if Vance simply built up support for an impeachment vote. Trump is doing a ton of things that would have gotten anyone else booted by now. And then all that's needed of a simple majority in the House with no Cabinet input. Still 2/3 of the Senate, but that might end up being only about 15 Republicans after the elections.
