This image captures the moment a former high school football star breaks down in court when his rape charge is dismissed. The dismissal occurred after the 16-year-old accuser admitted that the alleged incident never happened, concluding six years he spent in prison.

https://www.nsvrc.org/statistics/

"One in five women in the United States experienced completed or attempted rape during their lifetime"

"Nearly a quarter (24.8%) of men in the U.S. experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime."

"Nationwide, 81% of women and 43% of men reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime."

"One in three female victims of completed or attempted rape experienced it for the first time between the ages of 11 and 17"

And

"The prevalence of false reporting for sexual assault crimes is low — between two percent and 10 percent."

Sources for all this are linked in the site above.

I think it says a lot that some folks downvoted this despite it just being sourced stats of the level of sexual violence experienced by both men and women and the rarity of false reports. OP chose to post info about a case from more than 15yrs ago and didn't even bother posting sources (probably because the age of the case would have tipped off how rare these types of situations are). Yes, these types of false reports are awful but the sheer number of incidents of rape against both men and women are staggering.

I upvoted it because it should be said, but to play devil's advocate in regards to why people might be downvoting it: On threads about sexual assault, people discussing false accusations is generally discouraged, not because false accusations aren't a problem in theory, but because it distracts from and to a point dismisses the discussion about the injustice of sexual assault currently being presented. This is essentially the same thing; if people truly believed that these issues should be discussed separately, then this is as much a breach of that rule as discussing false accusations on a post about a sexual assault incident is.

If as few as 2% of reported rapes are false accusations but as recently as 2018, it was estimated that only 25% of rapes were reported to police, I think the argument that stuff like this "should be said" falls apart. When looking at false reports, you're looking at essentially a statistical anomaly when looking at the total number of incidents of rape. Yes, it can be said to happen, but focusing on false reports actively discourages both men and women from reporting acts of sexual violence. The problem of people not feeling safe to report or that they wouldn't be believed is a problem orders of magnitude greater in size than false reports.

stating the real issue.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm not sure you read what I thought "should be said" correctly-- my comment agrees with this point.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

(not the person who you replied to) I thought your comment was well-reasoned and easy to understand. I had those feelings about it but didn't have the words to describe it. It's kind of like putting crime statistics under an article about a murderer who is black because you're expecting racism. Kinda. Your breakdown was more accurate.

Thank you! :)

thanks for these statistics. Very useful for reasonable discourse on the topic!

Came here for the rage, stayed for the sensibility.

This image is from 2012. I am not sure why it is interesting (i.e. how it is nearly as interesting as anything else in this commag) nor why it is being dug up and posted now. It isn't even a good photo.

[–] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 66 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (3 children)

OP shows why here. This is because he believes false accusations are a bigger problem than actual rape, and is trying to craft the narrative that women don't get raped as much as they claim.

This is an incel post.

[–] CorrectAlias@piefed.blahaj.zone 16 points 5 days ago

Not only is this an incel post, it's a reddit repost, ripped word for word: https://redlib.privadency.com/r/interesting/comments/1wxvfr1/this_is_the_moment_captured_when_former_high/

So, OP was so stricken with this reddit post, they decided to post it here. And then make their terrible comment linked by you. That's how big of an incel they are.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

Oh wow they're just a straight up bad person ok

[–] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 1 points 3 days ago

A reminder that blocking on Lemmy is super easy. Blocking the incel weirdo.

Because there’s a lot of discourse around the Cornell gang rape and people have a vested interest in making others disbelieve the Jane Doe in that case.

You know exactly why it is being posted now.

  • Nationwide, 81% of women and 43% of men reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime.
  • Forty percent of rapes and sexual assaults were reported to police in 2017, but only about 25% were reported to police in 2018.
  • The prevalence of false reporting for sexual assault crimes is low — between two percent and 10 percent.

So she ruined a man's life, stole 6 years from him, made it so much harder for other woman to be believed....

And her punishment will be?.......

[–] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Finally someone said it succinctly.

[–] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I think we would all agree she deserves some form of punishment but I think we would also agree we don't want to scare off other false accusers from rescinding their lies. That makes figuring out what to do a lot less black and white.

[–] neatchee@piefed.social 11 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Genuine question: why would we prioritize avoiding deterrence of rescinding false accusations over deterrence of the false accusation itself?

[–] Bread@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Genuine Answer: While it may deter new instances, it comes at the cost of potentially harming the currently falsely accused by never letting them get justice because the fake accuser decides the cost is too high to come clean. The most precious thing we have is our time and freedom. What decision would you prefer if you were in the shoes of the falsely accused?

Its not ideal, but it is something that requires a little more consideration.

[–] neatchee@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

tbh I would want to see numbers on % of false accusations resolved through admission vs litigation to make this call. If the actual rate of admission is incredibly low already then the value would be negligible. And you have to weigh that against the deterrence value, and the value punishment provides in emotional restitution to the victims.

[–] Bread@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

Fair point. Perhaps a grandfather clause of sorts then to cover both instances?

[–] Jorn@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I think it's also worth adding, the justice system failed this man as well.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

It's news from 2012, you could probably dig and find out what happened to her.

Upvoted on the title but after reading the comments it seems like this is a decade old story being used for narrative purposes. So i changed it to a down vote.

Now if only incels could learn to change and grow and correct mistakes maybe they wouldn't be incels anymore.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

These one in a thousand stories when the other 999 were legitimate are always used like this to help vindicate the narrative that women make it up

The problem is those thousand cases represent a fraction of the around one hundred thousand victims that will never get justice.

[–] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

my grandpa always said that 100 attaboys will always get canceled out by only one "Aw shit"
