Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

MODERATORS

The Federal Communications Commission is considering a request by a conservative group to loosen rules on political robocalls, including those with artificial intelligence-generated voices, before November’s midterm elections.

Federal law currently bans most robocalls to cellphones unless the caller gets consent beforehand. The petition calls for a waiver that would allow political groups to use artificial or prerecorded voices in unsolicited wireless calls.

The Republican-led FCC advanced the request for public comment and could rule on it as soon as late October.

I've always assumed the Republican party's primary goal was self-enrichment. But at this point this is all so absurd it's starting to feel like their primary objective is simply to do whatever is worst for Americans based off of some internal bet they've made with themselves.

It's all just so comically detrimental to our nation. Literally every single move they make. It's almost like they're America's enemy or something. I can't think of another enemy that's doing more harm to us.

I feel like I would go absolutely insane and needed to end myself if I spent just 2 hours in the US during election time.

Anybody can add his number a few hundred thousand time to robo call lists?

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I imagine he’d be interested in joining the log cabin call trees. The, uh, special one, too. With the information on the after-convention party.

Just another reason to vote for Democrats people!!! GO VOTE!!!

They're so unbelievably less shitty than Republicans I really don't see how people are confused. The differences are so stark I can only assume the "both sides" assholes are foreign agents and/or bots and/or severely brain damaged.

Why is it when we pay for a phone, people (or AI entities) feel entitled to call us to sell us trinkets or give us messages? If we have a front door, the same thing happens, people we don't know feel entitled to knock and attempt to sell us something.

We pay a lot of money for phones, even more for residence doors. Others view those as opportunities to harass. We're on the Do Not Call list. Phone rings multiple times per day, robocallers who refuse to leave messages. We cannot answer the telephone any longer. Why are we paying monthly for the phone when we can no longer answer it?

Perhaps our system of trespass laws are not properly protecting us?

I thought political calls were excluded from rules already.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think I might just disable the phone app until after the election. Only get spam calls as it is.

[–] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 days ago

If it wasn’t for sms two factor and banks requiring a phone number, we could all basically just use iPads with cellular connectivity these days.

There are so many robocalls now, the emergency phone in our elevator is getting called. Multiple times a day it gets calls for Medicare, extended car insurance, and stuff like that.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Lmao that is so unbelievably cyberpunk/dystopic.

[–] AgentSeven@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 days ago

Since I get multiple robocalls every single day, it appears that nobody gives a fuck about the law, so who cares what the FCC says? It won't make one whit of difference, they do what they want anyway.

All Republicans can die now

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Last minute change, you say? Right when desperate MAGAs are shooting their wad and dumping tons of money into advertising to try to limit the damage, you say?

Huh.

[–] BigTrout75@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Joke is in them, I stopped answering unknown phone numbers because it's shit.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wait? Those robocalls are illegal?

Huh. Somebody tell the GOP that?

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Let's tell the criminals that criming is bad.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I am shocked that they are being limited now

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Thanks Biden (like actually).

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

More calls I won’t answer
