Good on her. I have kids, but if I haven't booked a window seat for my rugrats, why should I get a window seat for them.

[–] espentan@lemmy.world 41 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

It's really hard for me to fathom that people can straight up harass someone like this and somehow feel they're in the right. Holy cow. Poor woman. Fingers crossed she wins.

Hope she wins.

I’ve traveled with our kids when they were little. It sucks. Sometimes we’d have to beg a passenger if they would mind swapping…90% did, they didn’t want to be next to a kid, and we always offered to buy them drinks, snack boxes or whatever as thanks.

Sometimes we just had to suck it up and deal with being where the seats were. That’s how it goes when you can only afford the cheap seats that don’t let you pick the seat (fuck unbundling) thanks to the fare class.

Shaming a passenger out of a seat they paid for? IDK how that’s even on anyone’s radar. Slander, libel, defamation, whatever, hope she shuts down the fools that filmed her.

Someone posted a Brazilian article about it higher up, evidently it went her way but I haven't read it yet.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, children are an annoying menace to everyone. They cry loudly in public, have no care for social norms, take a lot of resources, are entitled, and grow up to take your job.

You aren't entitled to children, and if you make them then they are your problem. We should make having children illegal!

This was written as satire, but looking back...maybe yeah.

[–] caboose2006@lemmy.world 21 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Your choice to have a child does not mean I have to give up my comfort, or my anything really. That's your obligation you chose, not me.

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 16 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

So a little context. As far as a very shallow search revealed, the mother of the child didn't ask the young woman to change seats and she didn't record the video. The flight attendant asked and a bystander filmed it and posted it online. If those facts are true the mother didn't do anything wrong, she was trying to calm her child without making it another person's problem. Someone else got involved in a situation that didn't involve them, recorded it and put it online.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Because the mother choose to have the child? See the problem?

/s

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

now now, the child could have chosen to spontaneously erupt out of the mother. through jesus all things are possible

[–] Crozekiel@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 hours ago

So jot that down.

[–] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

That's not how it works. You put up with children because society put up with YOU as a child.

Like sure you don't have to give up your seat, you could, it might be nice, but you don't by any means have to. I'm just tired of /c/childfree bullshit like complaining there are children playing outside and it's intruding on their desire for silence.

"There was a baby on three plane" shut the fuck up, sounds like there were two babies in the plane.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Skill issue just don't cry and annoy people as a child

[–] Crozekiel@lemmy.zip 0 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Literally no one is saying any of that. The post is about not giving up a thing you literally paid for just to placate a stranger's crying baby (apparently not even at the behest of said stranger, but another unrelated stranger). It is absurd, and your leap of logic to "we all hate to see children playing outside" is just as absurd.

[–] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

your choice to have a child doesn't mean I have to give up my comfort, or my anything really

[–] Crozekiel@lemmy.zip 0 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

Yes, like this specific seat I paid for. Or my time or energy even. I do not have to give that up for a stranger's kids. "Putting up with" the fact that kids exist is not the same as being expected to bend over backwards to parent a stranger's child.

People like you are why "/c/childfree bullshit" exists. You think that "it takes a village" means that if someone mixes their DNA with someone else's, suddenly that is the "Village's" problem and not the parents.

[–] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 0 points 3 hours ago

[–] tyranny@crazypeople.online 51 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

filming strangers without asking isn't cool

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 5 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Neither is posting those stolen images after on Lemmy.

[–] tyranny@crazypeople.online 3 points 5 hours ago

fair point. they didn't ask to have their face plastered on social media, even by those who agree with their actions

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 0 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

In places with expected privacy. A plane has no expectation of privacy.

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 hours ago

The law in many countries is actually pretty complicated.

It's usually legal to film in public and to get people in your scene as long as they are incidental to the filming - they can't expect total privacy as it's public.

But if someone is aggressively recording, or doing so when it's clear the person does not want to be recorded, that may be considered as harassment or otherwise illegal.

[–] onnekas@sopuli.xyz 10 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

I think filming individual people and then uploading it isn't even legal in Europe?

[–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 15 points 9 hours ago

Most European carriers (including KLM, Lufthansa, Air France, Transavia, and Ryanair) explicitly state in their conditions of carriage or safety announcements that capturing other passengers or crew members on video without consent is forbidden. One instance they actually used the PA system to say to not record other passengers. As far as I've seen, it's not heavily enforced as long as you're doing holiday pics but the moment somebody starts harassing someone else with recording they turn on the harasser.

[–] Markus29@lemmy.today 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

It's a bit of a grey area. Filming in public places is generally allowed, but an airplane isn't really a public space in the same sense, since you need a ticket to enter. I guess it would also depend on the airline's terms and conditions.

[–] onnekas@sopuli.xyz 6 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

In Germany it is also allowed to film. However, if you directly film individual people then you are not allowed to publish that without consent. And I'd think that applies anywhere.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 84 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

Why in the hell didn't the parents pay for a window seat if it was that important? The fuq

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 hours ago

People do this shit and expect you to be too embarrassed to argue and therefore strong arm you out of the more expensive seat.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 19 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Because some parents turn into complete entitled assholes when they hit an airport.

I never travelled with my kids when they were babies, or even small children. You're welcome.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

I had to go to a funeral with an autistic toddler, it was hell but we got through it by preparing for it. Toys he'd never seen before helped the most. We also got treats and apologies for the seats near us and the crew. People are a lot more likely to help you if you're nice about it.

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

The entitlement starts long before they arrive at the airport.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

Yup. These are the parents who demand a meeting with the teacher because their kids are shit students.

[–] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

Why do that when you could bully someone out of their seat?

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 235 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

If "no" is an unacceptable response, then it wasn't a question.

[–] Kushan@lemmy.world 11 points 8 hours ago

Bold of you to assume they didn't just outright demand the seat for their darling angel child.

[–] sartalon@lemmy.world 166 points 21 hours ago (9 children)

It doesn't bother me at all, if someone asks for a seat, for any reason.

But it should also be understood that they have a right to say no, and you have no right to bitch about it.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 hours ago

Exactly. Although I'm reserving judgement all around because I have no idea what happened. Why was the child crying? Did they offer to pay the difference in fare? Why is this woman the only one that can switch? There are very few situations in which the woman would be judged inappropriate though.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

I was that way over a decade ago when seat selection didn't require extra payment. Nowadays, nope, if I paid extra for a aisle or window seat, you're not getting it without a equivalent trade.
