Last year I got a mix of mostly chocolates, and some other candies I considered filler. When I let the kids choose I noticed they didn't choose the chocolate, but I don't remember what they chose.
I probably gained three pounds.
Please, what should I buy that the kids will like?
I mean, it doesnβt really matter as long as you can still fit the razor blades and hypodermic needles in them, right?
A true Halloween veteran. Us old-timers know a candied apple can hold way more rusty razor blades than a fun size candy bar.

It's not justified, but I have an instant irrational dislike of anyone who says/thinks this, or who treats fruit as "dessert"...

We give out juice boxes. Theyβre surprisingly popular. Trick-or-treating is thirsty work. Sometimes, even the adults who are with the kids ask for a few.
We donβt have too many kids come by, so this doesnβt bankrupt us.
I hand out pop.
The person who did this every year where I'm from was an absolute legend to the kids.
My friend and her husband gave out Ramen last year, and they were so popular they feel like they have to do it every year now π
I give out toys and stickers, but I gotta find something for the littlest kids bc choking hazard on some of the small toys.
Ramen!? Okay. I'll try it.
Small/cheap coloring books perhaps? Some are tiny and have a small package of 4 crayons included.
The unhealthy alternative to candy
Kids will eat just about anything sweet or trade it in school if they are picky.
Buy the candy you don't like let the playground black-market figure the rest out.

Candy is expensive this year. We just went with most weight and pieces with the lowest price. BA ha ha ha

Not familiar with but it sounds scary.
Candies are basically divided into 2 categories: chocolate and fruit. I know there are some exceptions but in reality most candy can be placed in one of 2. Sounds like your neighborhood likes fruit based so skittles, gummy worms, stuff like that.
Also consider avoiding peanut/nut based candies since lots of kids are allergic. If you live in a hot climate chocolate might not be popular cause it melts. M&M's are your go-to if you need a choco option.
Me, I like chocolate over fruit snacks. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy some quality artificially flavored fruit chewies but I'll always grab M&M's over skittles.
Don't forget the bastard candies: twizzlers, wax lips and smarties.
I didn't think about the nut allergy thing. Maybe that's why some of them rejected the Snicker's bars and Reeses Cups. M&Ms are probably a better choice. And, Skittles, which I hate, but that was the point of asking.

Skittles are gross but some people like them.
I 3D print toys and then just buy whatever chocolate type candy bag at the store. We usually have a ton of kids and have become the popular house

I bought a bunch of little Mesh treat bags on Amazon and I put a candy and a toy in each. Basically a homemade blind bag. All in all each bag with toy and candy comes out to just under a buck

Holy crap. That's gonna be more than a dollar.
Little bit, Iβm printing it at 5% infill and Iβm at 20 rolls of filament so far - had two sections that were 3 day long prints fail which sucked reeeeeaaaallllu bad. I have a large format printer but it kinda sucks, I should have printed it in one of my smaller printers but Iβm too far in now
Off and on, I've been working on a talking skull design. Nothing elaborate, just eyes and mouth, two skulls wise-cracking. I haven't gotten past the Blender models and looking at animation software, though. It's been three years.
Maybe next year.

I agree with the other poster who said candy basically breaks down into fruity or chocolatey. Nerds and Starburst have been wildly popular in my neighborhood. This is also going to depend a lot on local tastes.
