Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

I remember our maths teacher once brought to school a mechanical calculator to impress us, and we were all like "uhh, sir? what is this even"

I can't remember his reaction to our lack of enthusiasm at the time, but I often think about that marvel of engineering and what he tried to share with us

One of my teachers brought in a slide rule but didn’t teach us how it actually worked, just talked about its history for a while. It got to me because I actually was excited, and I wanted to see it in action.

If anyone is wondering, slide rules use logarithms to turn addition into multiplication and subtraction into division. So think about how you would do addition with two rulers, if you were adding 2+3 you would line up the rulers so that the 0 on one was at the 2 on the other. Then you would see that the 3 on that one would be lined up with the 5 in the first ruler. If you follow that procedure in a slide rule then you will have done multiplication instead.

This is a great explanation for someone who hasn't used one, thank you :)

I'm just old enough that one of my high school teachers had a giant slide rule mounted at the top of the chalkboard. He was as quick with that as we were with our calculators.

He did show us how to use it, but we never practiced.

Dunno how I'd have reacted during my teenage years, but today I'd sit down and listen with full attention if he explained the inner workings of a mechanical calculator... Which I might have to watch a video of now. Fuck you for instigating my curiosity!

Looking online it looks like it might have been a Curta mechanic calculator, because I remember he said it could add, multiply, and subtract, but not divide

It really is sad I had to grow up having only the boring 7353 available as a meaningful calculator prank... :-(

EY, PASS AUF WAS DU SAGST, KOLLEGE, WIR KΓ–NNEN DAS SONST AUCH GERNE DRAUSSEN KLΓ„REN, JA?

;-)

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Halt die Klappe Alter sonst du bekommst mein knuckle sandwich!

(I forget what "knuckle" is in German. I want to say "knochen" but know it's not true)

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I think the correct German expression would be "sonst werde ich dir die Fresse polieren", which I again have no idea on how to translate to English (what's the English word for "Fresse"?? - Important stuff you don't learn in language class...).

I like "knuckle sandwich", though! :-) The word for "knuckle" would be "KnΓΆchel", but that usually is not used when talking about fighting.

But we interestingly also have a backery-themed expression for hitting someone: "ich semmel dir eine" (Semmel being the Southern German name for a kind of backed breakfast roll, and for some reason used as a verb here...)

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Fresse polieren

had to look that up: 'polish your mouth'
which is pretty colorful hahaha

I'll update my threat to a bread-based one, since bread is life

"Ich fuetter dir ein Knoechel Broetchen!" (yep, common expression, yep....)

That's quite the... "friendly" translation. I'd translate it as "polish your fucking mouth" instead.

You will likely get your mouth polished if you call someone's mouth a "Fresse".

[–] GandalftheBlack@feddit.org 3 points 2 weeks ago

I think gob is a decent translation for Fresse

That one used to be Dutch only, as 'lol' meant 'funny' long before the internet.

But had since become useable worldwide, in the anglosphere at least

Apparently "4" is a stand-in for "h", but it's hard to tell with a lot of fonts.

That beins said, I don't get why the name of an oil company is supposed to be funny

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Shouldn't there just be one 5 at the end?

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Nah, I mean I wrote the number backwards for the ease of reading but if you must see the math

6922251x8= 55378008

Edit: fat fingers

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But mirrored that would spell "boobiess" with an extra S at the end.

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] GJdan@programming.dev 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I read that as an insult. "You boobless man!"

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Lol not my intention, but still funny

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

We always just wrote 8008E15 or straight up 80085

[–] SLVRDRGN@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Where'd you get an E from? And why is it before the 1?

E is just the exponential marker (80081 x 10^5), placing it before the 1 is a typo

Real life calculators are, what, 50 years old? They're just as much a relic of our time as the abacus was once.

[–] mriormro@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

You probably live inside of and use buildings that are just as old or older.

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What are you talking about, I have two calculators...

[–] Randelung@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

my point is, things pass. they fade out over time. i used to program TI Voyage 200 in class, too, but it's naive to think the separate calculator will stick around forever.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I only have one abacus. Not even sure if it's the latest version, as I haven't been keeping up with abacus advancements lately.

[–] rounding_error@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

I remember using the alpha button in my calculator to type β€œ9 + 10 = [newline]21”
