I always thought you were supposed to row your boat GENTLY down the stream.

[โ€“] LongDickJonsson@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago (2 children)

๐ŸŽถ...belts off, pants down, isn't life a scream, uh!

[โ€“] WormEmperor@sopuli.xyz 10 points 3 days ago

Tally-ho, yippety-dip, and zing zang spillip.

[โ€“] tetris11@feddit.uk 2 points 3 days ago

thanks, LongDickJonsson

[โ€“] Glytch@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And feathering

[โ€“] ladicius@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yep, that's what rowing does to your hands.

[โ€“] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Do they not know about gloves?

[โ€“] monsieur_hackerman@programming.dev 17 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Those can make it worse, might depend on the glove though. Pulling fibers out of shredded skin hurts way more and you don't get as much feedback on the oar.

This only really happens when you first start, once you're grip isn't strangling the oar cuz the boat isn't set and your calluses develop, you're fine

[โ€“] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No wonder they invented sails

[โ€“] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Honestly pulling ropes isn't any better on the hands. If the wind is steady and you're going with it sure you can relax but the wind is rarely steady for that long.

[โ€“] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No wonder they invented propellers

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Honestly shovelling coal all day in a steam engine isn't great for neither your hands or lungs.

[โ€“] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.social 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's why they invented diesel.

[โ€“] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Honestly diesel fumes are terrible for health and the environment.

But you don't get calluses.

[โ€“] Kanda@reddthat.com 1 points 3 days ago

But you only need one ~~slave~~ engineer to do it

[โ€“] TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They have gloves specifically meant for rowing, though just like with other sports avoiding pain or bodily damage makes you less masculine.

Hehe I'm sure there's some of that too. For me that would just be one more thing for me to (mis) manage, which wasn't worth it since my body would figure out these new requirements every year at the beginning of water season anyway. Plus I would have a valid excuse to not do dishes by hand for like a week

One of my kids crewed in high school, so I can confirm.

[โ€“] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 38 points 3 days ago (4 children)

How about stop posting poorly cropped memes.

This trend is as annoying as poorly censored words.

[โ€“] puz@piefed.social 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm not much on mainstream social media anymore. But what is it with all this censoring bullshit?

[โ€“] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Years of social media conditioning. People are scared to post what they want lest they be de-platformed. That's where "unalived" and "grape" come from.

[โ€“] puz@piefed.social 6 points 3 days ago

yea ok. then i'm again at a point where I don't get censoring at all. We all know that "to unalive" means "kill" and even a kid would get that. We all know when a person on TV says FUCK when they put a little beep over the U but we still hear the F and CK sound.

So if we all keep doing/saying ""bad"" things but now in badly cropped memes or barely censored, then who are we doing this for? For the algorithm which would flag this automatically?

[โ€“] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I agree with you that self censoring by way of developing algo-safe speak... is very fucking silly to do in places where that actual censoring doesn't exist.

But!

In at least this case, I think the shitty crop makes it funnier, in the way a badly shot or framed picture can imply hurriedness or lack of skill or care.

I would agree, except I see it over and over again. It feels more like someone just trying to generate content without caring. More Algo-behavior.

[โ€“] sukhmel@programming.dev 7 points 3 days ago

I guess it's poorly cropped as a way of poorly censoring, so two-in-one

jerking off horses for sure

[โ€“] jerkface@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Rock climbing. Rock climbers can JACK it, man.

[โ€“] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Those couple of Mario Party minigames they had to stop putting in the games after MP2?

[โ€“] DrBob@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

Is it his first day?

[โ€“] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[โ€“] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

climbing would be a lot more fingertips and less middle of the finger

[โ€“] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Well for me it was different but I wasn't sure if different climbing styles might lead to this. The image on the left isn't too different from what I experienced at times with bouldering

Gravedigging?

[โ€“] monketman82@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Really bad sushi chef?

[โ€“] tetris11@feddit.uk 4 points 3 days ago

Speed boarding?
