Polish Foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorksi said a victory against Vladimir Putin’s forces would be swift due to the “overwhelming superiority” of its air forces, even without support from the United States.

“If Russia attacked us and we took our gloves off, I think we would defeat Russia quite quickly. We have overwhelming superiority over Russia in air power. General, correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s something like 2,500 aircraft,” he said during a discussion at the Yalta European Strategy meeting in Kyiv on Saturday.

“Even without the US it’s still overwhelming, and I haven’t checked recently how many F-35s and JASSMs and all the deep-strike capabilities we have.”

...

He went further to say that Poland could knock out half of Russia’s refining capacity in a matter of weeks. The comments were in relation to a potential conflict between Russia and Nato and not about the prospect of a direct war between Russia and Poland.

“But if the Ukrainians have knocked out half of Russia’s refining capacity in six months, we could do it in six weeks and take out the other half,” he continued.

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Sikorski of “Russophobia of the brain” in discussing the conflict.

Speculation has abounded that Moscow is plotting to attack Nato, claims that the country has denied.

...

Last month CIA director John Ratcliffe made a short trip to Moscow - the last time that a CIA chief visited the country personally was in the weeks before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Several sources familiar with the discussions told CBS News that Ratcliffe had made the visit to warn Russia against an attack on Nato.

Not a fan of this guy, but he's absolutely right about this one. Assuming the US wouldn't actively aid Russia, which isn't exactly guaranteed.

Russia only attacked Ukraine, because it was weak, vulnerable, and alone. None of these are true for the EU. Attacking any EU country would be suicide.

NATO is worthless, because it only does what its leader says. It's not a reliable security guarantee, and it's precisely why we're even talking about this to begin with.

As opposed to NATO Article 5 only requiring members to provide support thay they deem necessary, Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union requires all members states to 'aid and assist it by all the means in their power'.

Who's to say the US wouldn't order Lockheed Martin to stop all software updates for European F-35s, basically turning them into more expensive F-16s?

I'm just here for the tankie posts

i think Europe is about to experience what America and old colonies have been cushioning them from for 50 years. We're all gonna be struggling soon, if not economically then instead from climate-change-induced famines that wipe out entire established farming areas, we are all ignoring the long-term effects of data-centers because the short term is enough to make us all cry in rage, but eating will be difficult if we don't stop throwing electricity into the AI hole

[–] story@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 day ago

oh, i forgot the tankie part. China's recent quantization of deepseek v4 has basically made it impossible to monetize a token. they definitely have like, dozens of backdoors established in these AI companies as well as really good methods to manually scrape their weights just from clever interaction, and also just plain good scrappy techniques for utilizing old GPUs and RAM. the result? say you're a rich idiot who wants access to powerful AI. you can just run a free Chinese model on your own computer, or, if you're rich enough, your own data-center! and the AI companies get none of your money. China is undermining a critical revenue stream for AI and I'm pretty happy about it

Who wants to defeat Russia quickly?

Who wants to enlist their population into a toxic conscription environment, that will break them for decades and even the future generations will carry that pain? Who wants to spend a large amount of their GDP on a war?

[–] tardigrade@scribe.disroot.org 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

No one wants that, but as long as governments in Russia and China are doing it, the West has no alternative to protect its democracies.

Right now russia has almost no reserve left to fight the EU. We know that it won't be nato because nato would include the US which isn't interested in fighting russia.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We know that it won't be nato because nato would include the US which isn't interested in fighting russia.

This is a conversation about what Russia will choose to do. If Russia attacks NATO.

[–] abc@suppo.fi 1 points 1 day ago

The "problem" is that Russia is not going attack NATO in that classical sense. Obviously they'd be completely fucked if they did.

What they instead do is keep microescalating, like the schoolyard bully who goes to your face and says "not touching".

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah they said that about Nazi Germany as well. The world couldn't stand a United States that tried to keep to itself.

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They said that Nazi Germany had no reserve to fight WW2? Who said that?

No, they said the US had no interest to fight Nazi Germany. Because the US was trying to be isolationist at the time.

Clickbait title again! 😡

"If Russia attacked us and we took our gloves off, I think we would defeat Russia quite quickly."

Yes, agreed. There isn't even any bluster in that statement. And I think NATO agrees that this option isn't off the table.

But a cornered animal will do weird pointless self-destructive things, and it's possible it still has one or two functioning nukes...

edit:

I'm getting replies that seem to assume that I just dismissed Russia as toothless. I haven't said that.

I had a closer look at some articles about all that, and while most stick to the "official" numbers, and while it can be said with certainty that Russia has and is actively developing some nuclear weapons, there is no definity about how many there actually are or if they are deployable or even working. Careful phrasing like "it is generally estimated" or "Moscow claimed" is prevalent.

And that's the problem. As long as Russia is what it is we will never know. But they're not doing well and I think it's fair to speculate that the "official" numbers might not reflect reality anymore.

In war you can have all the advantages you can think about and still lose. Overconfidence about military supremacy has a huge cost if the war proceeds.

Germany in WW1 entered it avoiding attempts at deescalation, because it was overconfident it would overwhelm France and Russia. Both France and later USA had to withdraw from Vietnam. For recent example Russo-Ukranian war had Russia at clear advantage in manpower and industry, but we know now in retrospect, that it was not a couple of week pacification campaign as even myself was convinced it would be.

I guess that statement was likely a diplomatic posturing, but keep in mind that military conflicts very rarely go according to plan. The only certain thing that happens is human suffering inherent to military conflicts.

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Give me a break. Explain how Russia would defeat all of NATO after depleting their military for the past decade.

It's one thing to be overconfident, it's another to say vacuous contrarianisms like this.

[–] freshfusion@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

NATO losing is not necessary Russia winning. Vietnam did not really defeat NATO in conventional sense. Afghanistan neither did defeat NATO nor USSR. Algeria successfully resisted against France. Ethiopia pushed back Italians in their first war. The weaker countries did not occupy the stronger ones nor destroy their military. Hovewer these conflicts impacted deeply the stronger countries, and not for the best and they are still considered losers by history. Also Russia is way stronger proportionally than those previous examples and in same way to defeat NATO they would not necessary need to obliterate their military or even occupy much territory. Actually it can also work the opposite way, NATO itself could win in a similar way, but war politics as always are unpredicted, aside from death and destruction of course.

So, let's speculate on a full scale conflict if it goes to that. First, the most obvious: nukes. You will kill millions at minimum (in practice mostly civilians) Russians. Same will happen to westeners, the devastation would be massive if not apocalyptic.

But let's imagine nukes do not exist or are not used. What makes you so sure a large bombing campaign would make Russia surrender (they historically sustained having cities destroyed to dust and rebuilt them later) or an advance deep into Russian territory would be successful? What if military demands are not accepted, what if the population and government resists. What if men from central and western Europe massively dodge draft? I would avoid going to die thousands of kilometers away personally, would you? What if USA/Canada/Australia, other NATO countries... abstain from conflict? What if Russia also launches a massive bombing campaign and Europeans pressure their governments to sue for peace rather than hiding underground counting their dead and without electricity? It can go either way, you can never now.

Russians advancing deep into European territory is extremely unlikely, yes, but what makes you think the advance into Russia would be so different? Would you call a "frozen for years" conventional conflict with enormous economic damages, poverty and hundreds of thousands or millions of your fellow countrymen dying there, a win?

Then imagine all goes perfectly, you push all the way to the Siberia or whatever (no one in history has accomplished this before), you bomb the factories (and inevitably schools and hospitals). Guerilla warfare will be present, that will be a black hole for military personell and finances. Russia has way more territory and population than Vietnam or Afganistan. Russians, even liberally minded ones will rightfully mostly see westerners as occupiers. And all for what? So you can leave a failed state there later.

Maybe my response was not wholly coherent (English not my first language) and is too long, however my point is than especially in 21 century soft economical and cultural power is what makes your country or alliance strong and prosperous, it is how true geopolitical victory is archieved.

The EU could increase its chances by applying a Cuba-style embargo on Russia but then Germany couldn't buy Russian gas...

[–] roserose56@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, but declare where we getting gas from?

Is Poland ready for fracking?

[–] Waterpumpee@lemmus.org 14 points 3 days ago (15 children)

The problem isnt defeating russia or pushing it back. It it doing so while not triggering a nuclear response. So salami tactics it is. Currently russia loses entire generations on foreign battlefield. Signs of internal collapse are there.

I just feel like we should investigate russias sponsors like china and stop or threaten to stop trade with them plus finance their antagonists like pakistan (eww) or taiwan or whatever group gives them trouble.
