Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

They quit after a considerable effort by a central authority to communicate and educate. That's where the parallel breaks down. I don't see that in the near future.

I guess at some point in history regulation of cigarette companies felt impossible, so maybe if you extend the thought to include an unprecedented shift in policy it tracks.

Not smoking when you haven't started is really easy, because it smells awful

Until they made the nicotine taste like Monster Energy drinks, anyway. Don't look at zyns.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

they already using vapes, e -cigs.

Yep, that's what I was referring to. Monster vape juice was the moment I thought "whelp, big tobacco got them again"

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 44 points 1 week ago

An entire generation has not rejected smoking.

They replaced smoking with vaping and other ROAs. I'm pretty sure the past decade+, % of teens addicted to nicotine would be far greater than teen smokers in the 90s.

I'm in my mid 40s and I'm constantly bombarded with Vaping PSA ads on Reddit. I don't vape.

Source? Because no way that can be true

A Millennials' feelings (of superiority)

Ya but what pisses me off is that vaping ≠ nicotine. Secondhand vapour is far less of a problem than secondhand tobacco smoke, and that's before factoring in nicotine-free flavours. Banning it everywhere in the same thread as cigarettes is ridiculous and shouldn't be respected.

[–] pishadoot@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ok... But most people aren't vaping non-nicotine juice. You're technically correct that it exists, but who cares? That's not the issue, the issue is that it has hooked a new generation of smokers.

[–] DrunkenDuckling@lemmus.org 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Ok… But most people aren’t vaping non-nicotine juice

You'd be surprised... Nicotine salts are pretty controlled in much of the world so many teenagers are just vaping flavour. Vaping with nicotine was more a thing among recovering smokers.

Zynns are a different story.... Those are stupid amounts of Nicotine and pretty popular.

[–] pishadoot@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

No, I really wouldn't be surprised because I've been vaping for a decade, starting from enthusiast roots with high end mods and coil builds and then settling down into refillable tanks and off the shelf atomizers and juice.

As a former smoker I used ecigs to get off of nicotine by tapering down my nic content until I'm vaping 0 nic, which is HARD TO FIND on the shelf because nobody wants it. A lot of time the juice flavors are off/spoiled because they're sitting for so long.

It's NOT very common. Does it happen? Yes. But the whole thing is a pain in the ass and it doesn't "look cool" like smoking did at one point, so kids aren't just doing it for style points.

i'm gen z and like 80% of my friends smoke and ~95% vape

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm a millennial and went from all my friends smoked to everyone quit smoking to now everyone smokes. About 90% of gils i met on tinder in tge past 5 years smoked. Someone asked me why i didn't filter out smokers. Well, not really a whole lot left tbh.

[–] thenoirwolfess@fedinsfw.app 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ya i didn't quit smoking because of hygiene or health reasons, I quit because I was told it would impede the effects of feminising HRT. If i wasn't a girl I would be smoking rn

The same generation that smokes fewer cigarettes also consumes more vapes, so... 🤷‍♂️

The habit hasn't gone away; it merely evolved.

[–] Daft_ish@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wouldn't it be difficult to vape when vape didnt exsist.....

[–] Sludgeyy@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I was building my own mods and coils and juice before vaping took off.

It's just a battery in a tube with a coil as a resistor that heats up with battery contact and you squirt juice on it.

Even if they banned vapes tomorrow, I'd still vape.

The only way they could stop me is if I couldn't buy nicotine solution.

But I'd still probably vape non nicotine stuff for a while. It really is the act that's the most addictive part. Like I think someone could placebo me with switching my juice with no nicotine.

Everytime I make a new batch of juice I put less nicotine in it. I'm probably at like 8% of the nicotine I use to put in it after all these years.

[–] wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

That is what I did. Eventually there was no nicotine in the juice at all. But it's like you said, it's the act of it that was addictive, not the drug. To be quite honest, it didn't feel any different without the nicotine.

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

This is not entirely correct for reasons already cited, but I'll add this:

Government and healthcare providers have been driving anti-smoking campaigns for a looong time to the point that all cigarette packages are now olive green with gigantic content warnings and pictures of dead babies, and are prohibitively expensive. Also you won't get some medical treatment if you admit that you smoke or, to a lesser degree, ingest nicotine in other ways.

It's a bit short-sighted to say that the generations that grow up in this athmosphere performed an "insane feat of strength" instead of just growing up in a reality that makes it much harder to fall for cigarettes/nicotine.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's not exactly olive green IIRC, but some other shade that is scientifically proven to be one of the most disgusting colors to the average person

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's a pretty standard type of military green.

But yeah, they probably did a totally insane amount of research on that.

PS: I used to joke about collecting the different messages and pictures like football cards. The website this pic is from seems to be doing it in earnest...

[–] boredsquirrel@slrpnk.net 17 points 1 week ago

Lol at least here they are all smoking again. Or vaping, in vanilla-strawberry flavor with vapes that can be recharged but not refilled and are then discarded

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 11 points 1 week ago

Forever is a pretty long time. Can't say I've ever heard anyone make a bold statement like that.

[–] Thorry@feddit.org 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Meh, where I live few people smoke, but I still see people that smoke every other day. There's still cig butts everywhere. I was hiking in the forest and this dude walking his dog was smoking, I saw him flick his butt right into the nature he was enjoying. And the number of people vaping is huge, even very young folk who walk around with vapes.

I was in France recently and everyone smoked there, it was like going back in time 20 years. Ashtrays everywhere, everything stank and people were chain smoking non stop.

Just because something has gotten less popular locally, doesn't mean an entire generation has given it up. It's just a fad not to smoke cigarettes right now, a fad that might change in the future, given how addictive it is.

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Same in Germany. People don't even seem to realise the dangers of it, or how they're harming others. They just think it's their "right" and the government agrees.

[–] remon@ani.social 1 points 1 week ago

People don’t even seem to realise the dangers of it

Please ... we've had warnings and graphic images on the boxes for decades now, people do realise. They just accept these dangers or don't care.

[–] Admetus@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

Loads of people have given up smoking through sheer willpower. Some people just didn't start smoking straight away in the morning, so the giving up isn't a big deal to them.

Following a couple of years starting from those COVID days sitting for a morning smoke on the balcony, I gave up smoking by vaping, and gave up vaping via a change in scenery, change in routine and you know, just by being on holiday. At least two times.

When I got back, I got whacked by what I call triggers...a huge number of them nearly every hour. Previously I gave in to these, but I've learned the stupid way that nicotine psychology is madly powerful, and once you start to recognise you're just getting triggered for the hundredth time, you just get on with it.

Nicotine is pretty demonic when you think about it.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

quitting/NOT drinking alcohol is a bigger feat.

[–] areakode@riskeratspizza.com 1 points 6 days ago

Society turned its back on the smoking industry. But they BATHE in alcohol. Social pressure certainly adds a layer of difficulty.
