I clean cast iron how I want, purists be damned. If it needs seasoning again, then it’s done. That’s all there is to it. It’s cast iron ffs; you’re not gonna hurt it, it's gonna outlive you.

Removing bits of rust and re-seasoning after every dishwasher cycle is a bit more works than just cleaning by hand tho

[–] chocrates@piefed.world 7 points 6 days ago (4 children)

Does the dishwasher even ruin seasoning anymore? Since soap stopped using lye I heard it'd pretty gentle on seasoning these days

[–] dogfoodeater@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

A few years ago I had the bright idea to just use dishwasher powder for regular washing up. The cast iron pan kept needing to be reseasoned until I stopped doing that. I think that stuff might still have lye, or at least something harsh enough to mess up cast iron.

Dishwasher grit is abrasive when it it is dry. I guess I assumed it was saturated into the water before it was sprayed on dishes but I dont really know.

I use it to clean my bathtub. It works great, hope I'm not destroying anything

This. My dishwasher doesn’t seem to “strip” the pans. I rarely have to do more than heat a little oil and wipe it around the pans if they go through the dishwasher.

Yeah, let it soak! That's great for the seasoning as well.

[–] brakasha@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago

like using a wood chipper to sharpen your pencils. hot water, steel wool, and 5 minutes of your time will save you the 20 minutes per pan of removing rust and reseasoning.

bravo on the troll post, though; i’m legitimately furious

[–] rem26_art@fedia.io 17 points 6 days ago

the real gauntlet is reseasoning all of those pans and sharpening all of those knives before their owner gets home

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If mine are dirty, dishwasher wouldn't work anyway. If they aren't, why are they in there? Dishwasher works great on some things but not others, it won't remove egg, avocado, and wouldn't scrub the skillets for me.

I do use Dawn and briefly soak if necessary. Briefly. Most of my pans are older than any of my kids (so over 30 at least) and I've had to comprehensively strip and reseason two of them, once each, and reseason all of them when I let my husband wash them before he understood them. I got him a chainmail scrubber and explained no overnight soak and if you don't want to deal with it throw it in the bottom oven dirty.

They just get so so nice and nonstick when they're in good shape.

What weak ass dishwasher are you using? Normal ones will clean everything from everything.

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

This is so against my entire life of experience that I must ask you, what dishwasher do you claim cleans "everything from everything"? Because it sounds more like you don't really cook.

If you can really find me a dishwasher that will take a lasagna tray straight from the oven, and give it back to me ready for the cabinet, while also not breaking any dishes or glasses, I'll quit my job and sell them myself.

Yeah, I tried his advise and my dishwasher is a bit better but nowhere near cleaning pots properly if something was cooked onto them. We tried half a dozen different detergents (powders, pods, and liquid), putting detergent in the tub directly in addition to the little door, harsher wash cycles.

I can also smell rotting on dishes once clean but wetted if we run anything through with cat food on it (though few other people around me can smell it unless it gets really bad). I can tell a week later if we ran cat food through the dishwasher because I'll pull out a cup and fill it with water and then smell rotting halfway through my drink.
No the dishwasher doesn't have anything stuck in the filter. Yes this still happens immediately following a couple cleaning cycles according to the manual's instructions. No including vinegar in an upright cup doesn't change the behaviour but it does eat through our pot bottoms something fierce. The problem completely goes away if we soak cat food dishes beforehand and make sure there are no chunks of cat food that go through the dishwasher with no changes to anything else.

The dishes are clean enough to eat off but they are not as clean as if I washed them or paid special attention when using the dishwasher. Often the pots have residue / calcium / burnt on food bits left. Cutlery periodically comes out with dried food stuck on random parts of it even if the dishwasher wasn't very full to begin with.

Don't know what is involved in your process, but recently I made some baked vegies with cheese in a ceramic tray, and the only difference is, I had to run dishwasher on a long mode instead of regular eco mode I use. Then I wiped it with a towel and it was as clean as it was the day I bought it. I don't know what to tell you, it's a normal German dishwasher, nothing out of the ordinary. It's a new one, the house I'm renting in is like 3 years old, maybe that's the difference. But my previous one was some older model, and I also don't remember any troubles with it.

[–] Sibshops@feddit.cl 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Those cast irons don't even look like they've been through the dishwasher once.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 8 points 6 days ago

That's because you can't see the unseasoned insides.

[–] ftbd@feddit.org 2 points 4 days ago

Fine for stainless steel. If you do this to cast iron pans, though ...

Think I found it. Looks like its from the show Santa Clarita Diet.

[–] VoteNixon2016@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It is, and Netflix killed it just like that cast iron skillet

[–] TheColonel@reddthat.com 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It was a great show that used Timothy Oliphant perfectly and was cut down in its prime

[–] CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

I loved that show. Then netflix canceled it, like they cancel everything.

[–] DJKJuicy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 6 days ago

This person is a monster.

Im totally not crying right now.

[–] benderbeerman@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago

That's not a dishwasher, that's just an expensive drying rack

my parents ;-;

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 days ago

I mean it’s fine so long as you set it to a short cycle and auto dry.

[–] elevenbones@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

Ooh lookit me with my fancy dishwasher!

[–] bashibazouk@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago
