The only made in us products I buy are food, and that's because I live in statesia. Also musical instruments and that's because some musical instruments are made nowhere else.

[–] RedEyeFlightControl@lemmy.world 100 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It is so incredibly frustrating and embarrassing to be a us citizen right now.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago (3 children)

It’s never not been embarrassing. As a Native American I get asked questions like “do you live in a teepee?” The portrayal by white Americans of their fellow citizens to the rest of the world has been a profound source of embarrassment for my entire life, just as one for instance.

[–] tunetardis@piefed.ca 6 points 1 day ago

Well I can say "Lake America" is not going down well with indigenous in my area…or anyone, really. The guy just doesn't know when to stop.

At least they're consistent in their cluelessnes.

Greetings from Europe, carved in stone because we don't have electricity. Or internet.

[–] SillyDude@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

...my mom lived in a teepee, but it burned down.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (2 children)

We had a brief reprieve in the Biden years, but pretty much ever since 2015 it's been this way for me.

I always knew conservatives were way worse than the likes of David Brooks like to pretend they are. I grew up in a rural area, very very red, years before donnie came along. I moved out after college. But prior to that, I lived every day, surrounded by The Tribe That Rubs Shit In Their Hair, with very few exceptions.

And even I was surprised by them going for the washed-up never-was and complete con-man that is donnie. Pretty much anyone that was paying attention at the time knew he was an asshole back in the 80s and 90s. Hell, he's featured prominently as someone to worship by the protagonist in American Psycho. That's no accident, and that book was written in 1991.

Even I thought the rubes might not go for this effete fake "businessman" that has a lengthy hair-and-makeup routine and is mostly known for trying to climb the social ladder as a Manhattanite...but nope, they were completely fooled by this guy. Probably because of the racism.

This country has gone from one embarrassment to another during his two failed terms, though.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

At this point I’ve come to understand that he enables their racism and that is all that matters to them. The world could burn, but as long as they could let their racism feel accepted they’ll do whatever it takes.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

I think you are right. I saw them absolutely besides themselves over "PC" back in the early 90s. Even with all the so-called "tyranny" of political correctness, you'd still see some dickhead say something egregiously racist, homophobic, sexist, whatever, and then say, "oops, I guess that's not PC!" and think that was delightfully cute or something.

And then I saw their bullshit grievances reach fever pitch when they bitched and whined about conservatives being "censored" or "cancelled" in more recent years - lol, yeah, right. And then they cheered when Elon bought Xitter for the "free speech", roftlmao.

But they really just want to be able to say the n-word. To tell racist jokes again, in public and without anyone giving them side-eye. I'm sure they were positively giddy when Pete Hegseth used the word tr__y.

But this really, really, really seems to be the primary motivator for them, and none of them have ever really been "censored" or "cancelled".

I’ll tell you what’s at the bottom of it. If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.

  • LBJ

Oh, it was definitely the racism and mysogeny. "He says it like it is, just like me!" While at the same time Donnie is whining about immigrants, Muslims, eating dogs and cats, etc.

The grocery stores around here rarely have produce from the US anymore - not that we were buying it. Funny thing, after they started bringing in produce from other countries, the prices came down.

Suits me just fine.

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

I've got four grocery stores in town. Two are owned by Canadian companies, two by American companies.

I shop at three of them (two US and one Canadian) but pretty much just buying the marked down 50% off meats and veggies.

When given a choice I will buy the Canadian produce even if it is more.

I won't shop at the fourth place because the markup is so high even markdown goods are more expensive. The owner is a giant asshole, I used to work for that company in my teens and avoid it as much as possible.

[–] santa@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

I hope Canada goes so far as to seeking other countries to import from and export to, where possible, as part of this uncalled for and needless trade war.

[–] discocactus@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago

Shit, I live in the US and I'm boycotting their whiskey.

[–] TheSaus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 1 day ago

As a canadian, yep. Can’t say my shopping has got any harder or more expensive because of avoiding US made products.

[–] EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I really really hope pushes like this will continue. Reading about European pushes to give up big tech also has me really hopeful.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What we saw with Israel was a bunch of Israeli firms rebranding as American companies.

I suspect any attempt to de-couple from Big Tech in Europe will go the same way. You'll have Øræcle in Sweden and µSoft in Greece and Paulintir in the UK. But the financies will all tie back to the Usual Suspects - Marc Andressen and Gary Tan and Masayoshi Son.

[–] jondale@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

It's not always about big Sometimes the little things add up. I've ditched my company's Dropbox accounts for Sync, which to the best of my knowledge is Canadian, and done away with my personal free Google drive backup storage to actually pay to use Jottacloud which is Norwegian.

No Facebook or Instagram, or Reddit now that went to shit. Just figuring out my way on here.

No more apple TV, netflix or paramount or purchases from Amazon etc. I'll go into town now and buy all the screen covers and cables and shit from actual FKN shops instead.

Stopped eating at anything American - never did Macdonald's anyway but KFC, Popeyes, and all your shite coffee chains have gone out the window.

Gone back to using cash instead of visa and MasterCard debits. Waiting for Wero to come to the UK.

So I expect it to make no difference to how many billions all the US Tech cunts have in their pockets, but at least I get to have a little, warm , fuzzy feeling every time I see a Tesla and shout 'nazi' at them, knowing I'm contributing as little as possible to the us economy.

I get that someone, somewhere, up the chain from whatever I buy is a US conglomerate or whatever, but the less I feed in at the bottom the less they get out at the top.

So yh. 'Big' tech probably won't notice. Not for a while anyway. But the shift began when Trump started to wave his fists around and stain the US in his orange shit. And then they voted him in for a second term. So fk 'em.

Reap what you sow.

[–] Hakuso@scribe.disroot.org 4 points 1 day ago

As an American I draw the line at US corporations.

Great stuff by great people here, but all small scale, and often local.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Its the absolute least you can do. Everyone can atleast avoid some US products.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait until donnie the dotard gets a load of this. He's gonna get out his sharpie and scribble more shit on maps and executive orders about how he's "renaming" things.

Maybe he'll threaten sending ICE into Canada to tackle and kidnap people who aren't buying American goods.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They can try... but the only thing they're gonna accomplish is a whole new list of no-no's added to the Geneva convention.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You mean the Geneva to-do list?

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago

The Geneva Suggestion

[–] Canajan@piefed.ca 6 points 1 day ago

It needs refreshing anyhow, there are so many new ways to cause harm to our enemies these days. It’s not a war crime the first time.

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Meanwhile all the apps and subscriptions Canadian pay for goes into the pockets of U.S. executives and shareholders.

[–] YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 day ago (3 children)

That’s a much harder thing to boycott.

[–] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Harder, but not impossible. I canceled apple music, Amazon prime, Netfilx, audible, and Youtube premium. The hardest thing to replace has been audible, but I go to the library more.

Edit: i also canceled NYTimes for the Guardian and the Atlantic for the Walrus.

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know where it's operated out of, but I use libro.fm instead of audible. You can download the audiobooks you purchase so you get a drm free copy, but they do also have a subscription model. An added bonus is that some of the profits are donated to libraries. I believe you maybe can specify which library your money goes to.

Even if it's US based, at least there's that benefit.

[–] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Libro.me is dope! When signing up see if your local ~~library~~ bookstore is an affiliate - that way they will get a small cut of all your purchases and subs 😁

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

One option is for something like Plex + Prologue for audiobooks...also, as you point out, libraries (often) have options.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 day ago

Arrr… what matey?

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Far more of us than you realise, have never touched that shit to begin with. I have exactly 0 subscription services and the only apps I've ever paid for was to directly support independent developers (some of that's been facilitated by google play, but even that's been less and less over the years).

That was before we collectively said 'fuck America' and started actively seeking non-american solutions.

[–] Medic8eme@piefed.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Our house gave them all up.even socials for our small buisness. Fuck em. We will find another way.

[–] eurodyne@piefed.world 6 points 1 day ago

Oh, great. Fuck you, Trump

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

It sucks that it took Trump's shenanigans to do this, but Canada is a big place and should be reasonably self-sufficient. Someone else already said tech is going to be hard to source. I thought I heard that Canada was dealing with China for some tech, so you could build a computer and put Linux on it. While the Linux distro might be built by an American or a European, it's not sold for profit, so you'd just be using it. If there's a Canadian distro, I don't know. Sorry, I'm a Mac user and quite happy with my Macs. But if I were forced to use an Intel/AMD machine, I would 100% be a Linux user. I don't care for Microsoft at all (except for gaming, they're the slightly lesser evil between them and Sony).

[–] imvii@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember Microsoft giving Trump chunks of gold as a gift and flowing a ton of money his way like Apple has. Apple has been pretty blatant with their Trump bribes.

Yeah, Tim Cook has made a lot of questionable choices over the last year or two. It's speculated that they are necessary for Apple and he's just taking the heat so the next guy, John Ternus, looks better. Ternus takes over as CEO on 1 September. Tuesday.

Doesn't excuse much. Meanwhile insert whataboutism with Microsoft and Google here (I mean really, no one is good here).

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 5 points 1 day ago

OpenBSD is Canadian, but it also isn't Linux.

[–] golinux@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Quite a bit to choose from: Arch is Canadian, and two very nice and user-friendly derivatives are Dutch and German, respectively: EndeavourOS and Cachy. Debian is “global” - no headquarters, with contributors from all around the world. Ubuntu is backed by British-based company. OpenSuSE is German, with Swedish financial backing.

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think the takeaway here is that Linux isn't the work of just one person, even Linus Torvalds. So to expect an entirely Canadian Linux isn't really the goal — it should be enough that Canadians are working on Linux, it's being contributed to by lots of people.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to move goalposts or seem like I'm pulling the football out from Charlie Brown's kick... I suppose I was wrong to ask after a "Canadian Linux" in the first place, when the point of Linux is international collaboration without a mega corp in any one region profiting. Though, some companies do profit from Linux (e.g. Red Hat, I think that's American), the end-user doesn't pay for it.

[–] golinux@fedia.io 1 points 18 hours ago

Having a huge variety of distributions does allow you to be more selective though, based on whatever criteria is important to you. Re: RedHat - they are now an IBM subsidiary, so yeah- rather US-based.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I wouldn't buy it either, if it had a 50% tariff slapped on it

[–] TwinTitans@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

And PlayStation.
