Still find it weird you guys have adverts on tv for medication.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I went to a hotel and watched cable recently and it's, no joke, 85%+ drug commercials. Just endless ads with disgusting side effects read over happy images.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There's basically two side effect profiles:

  1. It makes you fat, sleepy, confused, constipated / diarrhea / both, and your genitals stop working, but possibly in a different way than your usual everyday hell so maybe it'll be a little better?

  2. It only has one side effect that only happens 0.00001% of the time: instant horrifyingly painful death.

Either way, sales are going to top 6.8 billion trillion dollars next year, among infants alone

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You mean prescription medication? I saw in Europe they still have tons of advertisements for OTC medication and a lot of them are snake oil.

[–] Technoworcester@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Prescription yes. OTC is more lax but (from what I have seen though of course could be wrong) still more tightly controlled than in the USA.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Even living in the US (but being on Lemmy and therefore knowing computers and hating advertising) getting stuck watching cable TV at a relative's house can be a real "boring dystopia" experience.

It can be genuinely disturbing when you realize the majority of the ads you've seen were for ONLY medication and gambling.

It's fucking wild that seeing a car commercial is refreshing in that it's just an actual product.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Apparently car commercials aren't even really meant to sell cars. Their main purpose is to make people feel good about the car they just bought (and are making enormous monthly payments on) so that they buy the same make of car next time.

[–] Logarrhythmia@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

We really need to find our way back to win on sunday sell on monday.

[–] postcapitalism@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago

This statement is not remotely true

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

There are radio ads too. Every single one is either "buy a car", "You have low-T and need to come get shots to be a Real Man™", or "Buy these boner pills for your sad limp dick"

Imagine Dragons - Radioactive playing in an ad for an X-ray clinic

A: Imagine dragon deez nuts across your face.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 5 points 2 days ago

I'm waiting for Firestarter to be used to sell me a cremation in 12 easy installments.

I saw Tony Hawk in an ad for arthritis medication a while back. I turned to my dad and said "I cannot overstate how cool this guy used to be."

[–] Shrubbery@piefed.social 7 points 2 days ago

"I cannot understate how cool this guy used to be."

I can: Tony Hawk was just a little cool. There, understated, 🎵 doing everything I can 🎵.

I thought I was losing my mind when I heard Run The Jewels in a fucking SUV commercial (sans lyrics though).

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's because it was DJ Shadow (who did the music) selling out, not Run The Jewels.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Still crazy to me. I've been a DJ Shadow fan since the 90s.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Maybe he gave the song to Run The Jewels because he regretted that commercial.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 2 points 2 days ago

I don't remember seeing it until after their song, but maybe.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

By the way, is your username a Kids in the Hall reference?

"Hearing a beloved song used in a late stage capitalism commercial for prescription drugs may cause moderate to severe emotional damage. If ear bleeding continues, call your doctor."

[–] SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

When your favorite club song happens to be by Partiboi69

[–] hypeerror@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Technotronic got their name by combining the word “techno” meaning a sort of dance music, and “tronic” meaning “tronic”.

[–] idegenszavak@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

The original 12-inch release of “Pump Up The Jam” came with a free horse.

tronic” meaning “tronic”

No, "tronic" means somebody addicted to '80s animated movies.

[–] Generica@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

You've got to lick it before you stick it might work well for diabetic testing strips

[–] nullspace@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hearing a song in a car commercial is what does it for me.

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

or hearing soulless corporate covers of songs i love - it makes me want to fucking die

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

The darude vs blade Remix was a banger

[–] Gork@sopuli.xyz 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I like it when those commercials says to tell your doctor if you have a parasitic infection. Pretty sure the ones who have it don't know it lol.

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (2 children)

You never know. I knew a dude who kept a tick on him to see how big it got. Folks fuck animals. Wouldn't surprise me if someone has parasite and kept it for some looney toons reason.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

"Im going to see how drunk I can get this tick"

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

People used to give themselves tapeworms to get/stay skinny

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

Look at it this way.. the band's getting royalties.

Good ones.

What frustrates me is that it doesn't have to be this way. They could just start using better original music. Consider what Game Grumps and Sbassbear did for Lipitor.

Meanwhile, they're also responsible for the best cover of Sandstorm.

Diamonds and Guns by the Transplants became the "woohoo" shampoo song and went downhill from there 😭
