And we nearly forgot New Zealand again

[–] phil@openmic.social 3 points 5 hours ago

Man those were the days. When I only had to travel a few hours from Florida to get good ethnic food!

[–] phtheven@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Having South Africa that close to Argentina seems like a bad idea. I reckon they would both turn out somehow even more racist.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 3 minutes ago* (last edited 3 minutes ago)

South africa is basically spooning brazil.

[–] saimen@feddit.org 4 points 9 hours ago

So Canada joining the EU does actually make sense

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Weird thing for a currently landlocked country to have a beach there.

[–] RunawayFixer@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

The following site has a similar setup: earth at different times with modern borders marked at their approximate locations. https://dinosaurpictures.org/ancient-earth#400

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Brazil now has at least 16 more countries on their border, and none of them speak Portuguese.

[–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 10 hours ago

And somehow Chile didn't lose any of its coastline.

[–] PrimeMinisterKeyes@leminal.space 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

I guess that would make Brazil the country with the most land borders shared with other countries.

Sing it back

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 58 points 1 day ago

Imagine the fucking train network we could have had!

[–] alpine_jim@piefed.social 33 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Iceland shouldn't be on this, it didn't exist until ~20 million years ago. Pangaea broke up ~200 million years ago.

Probably lots of others, like most of Japan shouldn't be labelled either.

[–] onlyhalfminotaur@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

NEERRRRRRRRD

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know my time lines, but I thought the Great Lakes where relatively newer.

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The Great Lakes were filled up by the retreating glaciers of the most recent ice age but most of the deep parts are hundreds of millions years old.

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 5 hours ago

There were ancient oceans there right?

We used to collect neat fossils along Lake Michigan as kids.

[–] northertech@fedia.io 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Spain and Portugal are way off. The Appalachians extend to the British Isles and are much older than the mountains in the Iberian peninsula.

Yeah, this appears to be for entertainment purposes only.

USA if suddenly in this scenario seeing so many "brown" countries so close:

[–] lime@feddit.nu 24 points 1 day ago

everyone if suddenly in this scenario:

[–] m4ylame0wecm@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah all those poor Floridians

[–] jaaake@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (6 children)

Every time I see Pangea, I have the same thought. Before I say it, I should preface that I know nothing about plate tectonics or geology or planetary physics or any other related science.

Are we sure that's how it was? I mean the whole one continent and the rest of the globe is ocean. Is there a chance that in addition to the super continent, the planet was also way smaller? Like maybe that continent wrapped around the majority of a smaller sphere instead of just one clump on one side of the current size of the sphere.

[–] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

Yes, they have a very good idea on accuracy. For the record, I was originally a young earth creationist but curiosity got the better of me. Geologists are very obsessive about rocks so it’s just a case of puzzling out what rocks match perfectly despite distance, accounting for things like erosion or volcanoes, and lining up the various ages of rocks for when they were made and when other rocks filled in. Then add fossils to check connections and weather conditions. There is obviously more than this, but it’s something a person can get real deep into.

The planet would not be noticeably different in size. The last time the earth got a noticeable rise in mass we ended up with a moon. There is evidence of objects in the lower mantle that are most likely old sunken tectonic plates, but I don’t recall details.

Today: Nothing but ocean in front of the US west coast.

Back then: Nothing but ocean in front of the US west coast.

[–] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 6 points 1 day ago

I'm actually pretty sure the west coast wouldn't exist, didn't the Rockies get formed by the pacific plate hitting the North American plate while pangea was unforming?

[–] 9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Is the other half of earth just a big ocean? Or what?

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

No, thats where the giants live.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 16 points 1 day ago

Yeah. Just a single vast expanse of ocean that makes the modern-day Pacific look small and cramped. Just think how lonely it would be in a boat on the other side of the earth...

Oh, and the hurricanes will be absolutely gargantuan sometimes, having such a large ocean to strengthen over before finally hitting land.

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 8 points 1 day ago

I mean, the Earth currently is 71% ocean.

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] nodiratime@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No thanks, the americans are way too close.

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We're even closer. I'm in your walls.

[–] nodiratime@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

East Africa splitting from the continent and the resulting strip of lakes is a relatively recent phenomenon.

Imagine the railroads

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 23 hours ago

Wow! So THAT'S what it looked like.

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 2 points 1 day ago

I find it a bit surprising that almost every major country is mapped to Pangea. Notably Iran is split down the Zagros mountain range.

[–] justOnePersistentKbinPlease@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Serious question, what would BC through to Colorado look like during Pangea as when work was like this the Rocky Mountains weren't mountains yet.

I've seen a gif of this and it's funny how India just floats its way to China.

[–] db_null@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

Proof it was flat then too!!1

[–] xSikes@feddit.online 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The toll prices through Spain and France would be nuts.

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

But it's easier to avoid Switzerland, so that evens out.

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Hey, my favorite fishing spot survived!

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 2 points 1 day ago

Finally a solution to the continent loneliness crisis.
