1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

Freaking love looking at other people's books (or board games for that matter). Allways so fun to find something you recognize or something new that sparks your interest.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

board games

But I didn't organize them

[–] MarcomachtKuchen@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Fuck yeah Gloomhaven. Also splendor, dominion and Scythe I guess

I have a feeling we would be friends

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

can be too! who's your favorite author?

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Of all time? … gees it would be hard to pick. I’m really enjoying DCC now so Dinniman is up there. Also enjoy Andy Weir. But in the past I would have said Arthur C Clarke or maybe Douglas Adams. Orson Scott Card, William Gibson, Asimov, Bradbury…. It really depends on my mood. But sci-fi and now litrpg are my go to genres.

In the pic it’s kinda hard to read the titles of some of the books (likely because I’m on my phone) but if you haven’t checked out He Who Fights with Monsters it is also a very good series. And you absolutely have to check out the audiobook for DCC. Jeff Hays is a god. I read the first book and then found the audiobook. It takes it to a different level.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

lemmy downsampled the photo anyway, so the details are a bit hard to see. I love the Clarke books! There was one about moon dust, i forgot the name, but it was very impactful when i read it as a kid. . I don't know Gibson i'll look them up. I think Bradbury is my favorite of all, small short stories but plenty of "quiet" ideas that sit with you. I think Asmiov really shines in short stories, i found the foundation series went on a bit too long and kinda repeated the same gimmick over and over.

I'll take a look at He Who Fight with Monsters as well.

The original hitchhikers bbc radio radio dramas sit well with me more than the books, i will check out the DCC audiobooks for that reason alone, thanks for the pointer.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A Fall of Moondust maybe? thats the only one I can think of about moon dust. My favorite Clarke was probably the Rama series and of course 2001, 2010, 2061, and 3001. Honestly I liked the Rama series more but don't tell anyone. So many Bradbury stories I read when I was younger (high school, college) but my two favorites are probably A Sound of Thunder and The Martian. I was so psyched about the movie for A Sound of Thunder (yes they made a movie) but it was just ok.

And speaking of impactful, have you ever read the short story “Think Like a Dinosaur” by James Patrick Kelly. Pretty sure I read this for a college class but I still think about that story to this day. And The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. Also think about this book a lot. No idea way. I guess I was impressionable at the time :)

You should make a list instead of just the pic. I'd love to see what else is there.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There is a list! the spoilers in the post expand to the book list with links (well, mostly, some of the books didn't get scanned, but its mostly complete)

Yes - A fall of moondust! Rama was really a great story both about meta-structures where we are not the main character, and how human colonies morph over time - it wet my appetite for Ringworld - which i cannot recommend enough.

I'm partial to Bradbury's "There will come soft rains", mostly because a civilization has echo's through time and even if ours falls we are not totally gone.

I have not had the pleasure of reading Think Like a Dinosaur yet, but i will soon!

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

One of these days I’m gonna dive into Ringworld…

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 1 points 1 month ago

I think Niven is my favorite author, if you enjoy ringworld you will enjoy his other books as well, but he has a huge collection of short stories you can get a taste with first.

Goddamn it Donut! The top two rows are nearly identical to mine (the ikea black shelfs). I didn't go through the rest. Great collection.

Also, sorry about the name of the wind, he may have wrote himself into a corner or such. I was hoping he finished, but I doubt it

I wish I lived close by, so I could borrow these and not return them

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Sorry, that's way too orderly and neat /s

Not saying my kalax redditor shelf is a mess but it's certainly not as organised.

[–] goldenquetzal@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

GLURP GLURP

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I like the cut of your jib.

You seem to missing an Argonath, however.

[–] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 month ago

Great taste in books. Very nice.

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not familiar with those MZCO books.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 6 points 1 month ago

Took me a second to figure it out. Yeah, I see it now

mzco

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

dune being a different size and position on every book absolutely murders me

[–] Acid_Burn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Great collection! No William Gibson though? I think you might enjoy some of Neal Stephenson's other books too.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

i'm always open to good options! i'll lookup william gibson!

[–] Acid_Burn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey are also amazing and would be right up your alley.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 3 points 1 month ago

oh great, i love hard science fiction - bend one rule, but follow it to its logical conclusion!

[–] vext01@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] jet@hackertalks.com 3 points 1 month ago

And the supplements!

[–] ExhaleSmile@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Where's the second argonath?

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I recommend "Last chance to see" by Douglas Adams. He himself considered it to be his best book.

Also recommend looking into Jasper Ffordes works. Fantastic fantastic ideas, sometimes silly, sometimes dark.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

My shelves are organized by color.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

That's so much better than organized by height!

before

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 2 points 1 month ago

I don't see The Expanse series here, I'd highly recommend it if you haven't read it already!

[–] darkmogool@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

nice! perfect fit for 2-3 book nooks in it :)

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Nice mat dinamin!

[–] Erusset@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Love it and thanks for all the linking too.

Is there a reason you don't have the hobbit or LotR along with your other JRRT books?

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They are there just hard to see, Lemmy downsampled the photo.

hobbit

[–] Erusset@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Cool. Looks like a nice set

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

yeah, i really like it! leather bound, feels good in the hands.

[–] Erusset@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

Maybe if my set needs replacing or I gift one to my kids I'll look at that.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 1 points 1 month ago

I thought i could do better, moved some shelves around! but since the books were already sorted it took no time at all to move them.

[–] thenextguy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You should organize them by color.

[–] black0ut@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago

You should organize them by taste
