But why? It looks ugly af.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 31 points 4 days ago (2 children)

also uncomfortable as fuck.

I'm just surprised they didn't slap some LEDs in the eyes...

that would almost justify half the price

[–] ReluctantMuskrat@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

Way to ruin this for me. Now I'm not buying it until they give me LED eyes.

[–] ghen@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I dunno, I kinda like the audacity of it not fitting anything else on my desk. If it were $10 and still as well shaded it could be my print screen key or something

You could probably get someone to print one for not much money.

There are a lot of cheap third party manufacturers out there. Lots of small producers to support as well.

It costs $90 to recoup the R&D expenses incurred from developing a way to make a plastic keycap with no moving parts or electronic components mysteriously stop working three months after purchase, so we can deny your warranty claim on it. That was a very difficult feature to add, we'll have you know.

With 3D printers in play, how is stuff like this still a thing?

[–] makeshift0546@lemmy.today 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Because the quality is garbage unless you're fucking with resin.

[–] Bohne93@feddit.org 6 points 4 days ago

Because we just aren't a serious species

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Because the quality you get with 3D printers is still far below what is produced with injection molding or pressure cast resin, really. 3D printing is great, but there's still huge advances to be made in both FDM and the various SLA-like systems. Oh that and razer fanboys are all fundementally broken.

Can you get the kind of detail shown in the pic? At that granularity? How much post print sanding is needed?

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

Good luck selling 5 of those.

[–] tea_n_typewriters@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

“The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment…” vibes.

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 16 points 4 days ago

Even games workshop would be impressed at that level of overpriced plastic

[–] kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 4 days ago

PR nonsense? It sounds like complete honesty to me. It's difficult to imagine a way to pay $90 for a single keycap without allegiance to a cult.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Guys, peeps, dudes...there's a lot of negative speak in these comments. It's like you don't want to wildly overpay for a bit of plastic that cost almost nothing to design and make? It's even like you don't want to be in a cult!!
Come on, join the cult. Buy the overpriced piece of shit and only then you'll be able to look down on the paupers!!

Repeat after me:
Buy the tat, join the cult.
Buy the tat, join the cult.
Buy the tat, join the cult!!!
Nanananana Razer
NANANANANA RAZER!!

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 4 points 4 days ago

that cost almost nothing to design and make?

It says they're hand-painted. So it probably cost 10 bucks to make, actually.

[–] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago

It should launch the Python IDE whenever pressed. Similar keycap for Rust developers comes with a tetanus vaccine at a whooping $299 a piece.

[–] Arcane2077@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago

Brand allegiance might be stupid on its face, but dig a little deeper, and brand allegiance to Razer specifically is even dumber.

When I was young a stupid, I bought razer stuff and most of it has broke by now. Within 2-3 years the battery bloated and it was a known common issue in the community. I replaced the battery and the new one also bloated. For the mouse, the outer construction was trash so the grips and paint peeled off, the keyboard just refused to work reliably iirc.

Terrible terrible company

[–] RedGreenBlue@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago

I'm amazed Razer is still around.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Where does razer place on the pyramid of companies that should be burnt down and its ashes collectively pissed in?

I would say its probably.. just below ubisoft, who is tied with EA, both of whom are just beloe nvidia.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 3 points 4 days ago

Artisan key caps can be cool, fuck Razer and their shitty overpriced peripherals though.

[–] Wooki@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Surprised it doesn't come with mandatory spyware before it works

[–] Gumus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Presumably, you're putting this on a Razer keyboard and you already have the spyware running.

Or you're putting it on a non-Razer keyboard, then... why??

Althoug I could imagine a scenario of a cultist running Linux, which Razer obviously doesn't support.

[–] Wooki@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Someone could be both a masochist and in house Slytherin.... we don't kink shame here.

(don't read too deep into the potter reference)

JFC that site is cancer.
