Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

It's counted as a separate game from Elden Ring proper rather than another DLC part of the main game. The thing is that, the intention is built for 3 players rather than solo: but can it be played singleplayer or not? Besides that, are there any differences between this game and actual Elden Ring (apart from the UI)?

It's a very different game, not really comparable at all to Elden Ring. It's made by a different team inside of FromSoft and uses the assets of Elden Ring, but plays very differently.

For me I didn't vibe with Nightreign after having spent 1500 hours in Elden Ring. Elden Ring is all about exploration, getting to hard bosses and getting your ass beat for sometimes hours. When the game was new I liked exploring the entire world finding all of the secrets, finding all of the bosses and beating them. When I knew the game inside and out I enjoy doing challenge runs, randomizers, mods etc. Especially doing crazy dumb challenges and getting my ass handed to me, but then overcoming those challenges and getting the feeling of having done so.

Nightreign is very different. It's GO GO GO GO GO all of the time. You need split second decisions about where to go, what to prioritize and you have a ticking clock all of the time. Taking too long to do something means missing out on rewards and perhaps even losing the run. It can be done single player, but it's really focused on having a team. But a team can be hard, if there is someone much better or much worse, the team doesn't work and fails. It's also important to work together, so that usually means just following whatever the one person best at the game does. The order in which you do stuff matters a lot and you need experience to know what works best. The bosses are hard, but when you lose it's just over. You need to do a full run to get back to that boss (and it might not be the same boss, depending).

For me Elden Ring feels like dipping into a relaxing hot bath. Just enjoying the world and even when I get my ass beat by a boss for hours, it's still relaxing to me. Nightreign is the absolute opposite, it feels very stressful especially because of the go go go aspect. I also feel like when I fail I'm letting the team down and it's up to me to do better, but doing better is often more knowledge based than skill based.

In terms of combat, it feels like Nightreign is a bit simpler compared to Elden Ring, but still comparable.

A) yeah you can play solo for sure, there's scaling based on party size and some character missions make more sense to do solo anyway.

B) there are a fair number of differences but it's pretty intuitive coming from Elden Ring. Mostly changes to the game's overall speed - youre on a ticking clock in a pretty large map so youve got to make decisions about gear, pathing etc very quickly.

You want to go to churches, Evergaols once you get the relic for them, and anywhere thats gonna drop something useful for you. The map provides a lot of information once you get used to reading it quickly.

Its been a minute since I played either but thats the gist. Its a fun game if youre up for it. Definitely more of a challenge solo, if you find a group just follow them as closely as you can and you'll pick it up.

The basic gameplay loop is entirely different for these two. Whereas Elden Ring is an open-world soulslike with huge onus on exploration and lore, Nightreign is more of a rogue-like arena-fighter soulslike. Movement and traversal are a lot faster and the focus is, more or less, on fighting alone.

Nightreign is built on Elden Ring, but at their core they're two different experiences. If you've played neither, I'd suggest going for Elden Ring first, and if you like that and you also like a game to pick up and play for an hour here and there and like roguelike elements, Nightreign might be worth picking up as well.

I love all Fromsoft games but Nightreign has become my favorite. To me, the roguelite angle ‘solves’ a lot of the small issues that arpgs have. I could go on and on but there is already a lot of info out there.

All I’d recommend is to definitely play three-player runs, even with randos if you have to. That’s the best way to learn pathing and other important strategies. Of course there are plenty of shits out there but the vast majority of co-op experiences I have had in Nightreign have been great.
