A community for your defence shitposting needs

Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.

AI slop aside I am seeing a band of black on the lower jaw lip into lighter color at the teeth. That's not a Chinook salmon, that's a Coho.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

But an LLM ingested a website with pictures of both Coho and Chinook salmon on it so the weights in the algorithm are the same. This is why we can’t trust a single thing that comes out of these bullshit machines. /s

Edit: Forgot about Poe’s? Law.

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

As an LLM is told to do. And then it was told to make a cartoon by a person who, like most people, can't identify salmon species well enough to know if it is accurate.

An LLM is dumb, yes, we should all know that. But the people building and using them are too.

this could've been an easy photoshop job, but nope AI slop

[–] sepi@piefed.social 1 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

I even left the watermark in, not hiding that I generated this with craiyon. Did you have to do detective work to figure it out?

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 1 points 25 seconds ago

and you assume wveryone knows what that is? i had no idea what that little icon meant

[–] fourtonetiger@lemmy.ca 6 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

You're missing the point. Fuck AI.

[–] sepi@piefed.social 0 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

I hate the oligarchbros that are pulling some financial stunts and fucking up the world. They're not my friends. We don't need all the datacenters these clowns are building, destroying the environment, because we were pretty appropriately sized before for shiz like inage generation.

The financial games will come to a head in some sort of financial catastrophe that will hurt everybody.

But the real secret is that this image generation shtuff and text generation stuff is just computer code that we'll still be using years from now, like one uses a hash to verify the contents of a file or a dht.

I run models on my macbook in my bathroom, using only 55 watts max on the gpu there. That's what "AI" is. Just some code and shit.

What the assholes are doing in the big companies is fraud, abusing people, beeaking laws, etc. None of that is necessary. This is entirely the choice of some weirdos that think they can build a god cos they have a cluster of mental illnesses. This is what everybody is reacting to. Stealing intelectual property, building datacenters where people don't want them, polluting the environment: these are all choices that the people building the companies have made. Many of them intentionally make cruel choices.

That's not what I did. I asked for a picture of a fish with a rotor cos I have had this idea in my head and I have thought this is the funniest thing. I am not advocating for the jerks that are destroying the planet.

I saw the watermark and I decided to leave it in, so that nobody could be confused as to the provenance of the thing. My photoshop/gimp days on somethingawful are long past me, and I just wanted to make a quick joke.

I feel anger, like you do, towards the thing that the jerks are doing with money and computers. I've gone out to protest against the capture of our state by assholes with money. My anger is pointed at the people.

[–] fourtonetiger@lemmy.ca 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Okay, calm down now. I'm not reading a wall of slop justification unless it includes the words, "I am physically incapable of putting a picture of a fish over a helicopter".

'I didn't read that, you're just lazy, slop slop slop ha ha.'

Yes it fucking is. What you're doing is shitty and you need to be better. You can't claim to care oh-so-deeply about true human effort, then brush aside when someone tries explaining their position on the issue you hassled them about.

[–] fourtonetiger@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 minutes ago

Nice strawman btw. You can't completely change what I said and go, "look how shitty that was!"

[–] fourtonetiger@lemmy.ca 1 points 19 minutes ago

Calling that abuse or trolling is such a stretch it's disrespectful to actual victims of online abuse and trolling.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

We goons seem distinctly realistic about this tech, because we did this shit the hard way, and that was much closer to theft. The shrill insistence 'it's only combining images!' has to be met with (1) nah we know what looks like and it's never this clean or bespoke, and (2) the alternative is literally combining images. Those photos of an elephant hunt, Ted Nugent, and Snuffleupagus had identifiable authorship, and their union involved neither permission not attribution.

What bugs me most is people asserting, 'models don't understand what they're showing.' They don't have to? The user understands those concepts, which is why they asked for them. A human being is using the tool's ability to show those things to express an idea. Even if that idea is really really stupid.

[–] BoneheadBruin@pawb.social -2 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

See? You managed to take "My plagiarism machine produces only the most ethical slop because it runs on a Macbook" and blow it out to 8 paragraphs presumably without using AI to write it for you. The creative energy was within you all along.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

The nature of bad faith is that there is no right answer.

You didn't read any of that - you just sneered harder than the first guy. Most of y'all do not seem to care which complaints you pick, except for where they point toward. They are not addressable. They are pretense.

That's why grabbing whole photographs off Google Images and slapping them together in Photoshop is lauded as good-old-days shitposting, but you still posture about "plagiarism."

[–] BoneheadBruin@pawb.social -2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

I know we already lost both of y'all to the psychosis but for what it's worth I hope some day you realize making those pictures by hand is both a personalized and transformative expression of yourself and your skills as a human being, even when shitposting -- while the AI route is just gambling at the slop-machine illegally trained on all of human creation until it produces something vaguely similar to thing you (or rather OP) admit to not even caring about.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago

Shitposts being deep expressions of the soul, apparently. News to me after several Photoshop Phridays selected my hard work of maybe half an hour. News also to the photographers whose images I stole and illegally combined. Images picked from the few relevant examples, when I'd search for a specific reference and cross my fingers.

These contradictions don't phase you. You're not listening. Any disagreement gets labeled as brain damage, and then the same complaints get parroted anew. As if people who pirated Photoshop will be swayed by copyright law.

My guy: the personalized aspect of a gag image for strangers is the quality of the idea, not the tedious skill of rotoscoping low-quality inputs. Effort can be part of the joke, but there's entire subcultures for text over stolen frames from Spongebob. Now eight gigs of linear algebra will let your computer render bespoke images on command. In what reality will people politely abandon that and pretend it never happened?

Would a model trained only on licensed work change how you talk about this, at all?

[–] sepi@piefed.social 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

So I gotta make effort to entertain you? Why? You're not paying me.

[–] BoneheadBruin@pawb.social -2 points 16 hours ago

By your own admission you're creating content with little to no effort using AI? I think there's a word for that.

Vote. Is this

A) a helifish B) a fishopter

[–] zakobjoa@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago

This is slop.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 5 points 23 hours ago

You need a defense from a SAM man.

[–] TargaryenTKE@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago

Okay you see those shiny bits? They're called scales. Remove all of them and replace each one with a new gun

[–] Morphit@feddit.uk 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

The lack of tandem rotors is offensive.

[–] sepi@piefed.social 1 points 2 hours ago

I couldn't find a spot to put the second one on. Maybe on the bottom?
