Holy shit is that a punchable face

[–] Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 49 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Looking at EA's executive page I think that's a requirement.

[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fucker looks like an opponent in the NES version of Mike Tyson’s punch out

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 2 points 2 weeks ago

I would play that ROM hack.

[–] cholesterol@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

It's not a face. It's just another thing he bought.

[–] Sineljora@sh.itjust.works 77 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

EA is owned by the Saudis and Jared Kushner right?

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 56 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It is now. Used to be owned by a constellation of private equity firms from BlackRock to Capital International Investors to The Vanguard Group. Just different flavors of evil.

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Wow, that's horrible.

[–] officermike@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

AFAIK, the deal is still in the process of clearing regulatory hurdles. I don't think they are effectively the owners just yet.

[–] Dequei@piefed.social 9 points 2 weeks ago

It's approved.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

Sadly that's probably an improvement given EA's history.

[–] Madnessx9@lemmy.world 40 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Criminal, the game was a great success thanks to those devs, he is just a greedy cunt and sacked them so they dont have to share the money.

$30 million could've paid the salaries of 300 developers, assuming each one is paid roughly market wages of $100,000.

"We have greately reduced the weight of the car by removing its engine."

[–] MrRandom@lemmy.zip 26 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

people are still buying shot from EA?

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You have to remember that there's a lot of braindead folk out there.

The ones who buy every sports game. The one who just pick up a yearly shooter. To them, it's like buying a pay-per-view match or a concert ticket. $70 for a couple hours of joy.

They walk among us. If anything, we are the minority.

I forgot they even make games still. I haven't ever bought a FIFA and the last Need For Speed I played was...Shift 2. And I'm a car guy.

After they ended the Mass Effect trilogy, I've not seen many compelling releases from them.

[–] HaroldBaws@lemmy.zip 23 points 2 weeks ago

Don’t buy anything from EA. Ever. For any reason.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Laid off the devs and achieved their goals in the same year. I wonder if the future games those devs were working on will continue to be successful.

The next release might be good but the following one is the one to watch.

[–] urushitan@kakera.kintsugi.moe 15 points 2 weeks ago

That's next CEOs problem, system working as intended

[–] AChiTenshi@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Unfortunately the industry has a ha it of doing this. A project finishes and they let go of a bunch of the staff, this means quite a few good developers are looking for work. Since this happens so often when they staff back up for the next project there is plenty of good talent to pick up.

There is the major downside of loss of institutional knowledge, but its the price they are willing to pay I guess.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Why not just get them working on a new game? This way don't they have months/years of zero development towards the next release?

Why delay?

If they don't want it to compete with the fresh release too soon just get them working on a different genre that won't overlap. Instead of battlefield 7 get them working on something like Spore 3 or whatever.

[–] Squirrelanna@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 weeks ago

Why do that when you can cut raises and hire new people cheaper so that the greedy fuckers at the top can pocket it?

[–] AChiTenshi@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

These are great questions but it often boils down to a few factors. One is do they have the money put aside yet for a new project. Especially larger companies funding has to be secured per project, which means pitching an idea potentially doing a prototype etc.

The other is you generally don't need as much staff in the pre production stage of a project. Your trying to figure out what technologies you'll use, what style of art etc. Once you move into full blown production then you end up ramping up on developers, artists, etc.

And that's if you have an idea ready to go.

Basically to maintain everyone or even a large number of them you'd have to have multiple projects on the go to be able to shift everyone around.

Some studios handle this better then others. And I'm sure there are some higher level executives who don't really care. It's beneficial for some of them to save the studio the money between projects I'm sure that reflects in thier bonuses, which sucks.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ironically EA is one of the companies that has more to lose from loss of institutional knowledge because they have an in-house engine.

If you're running Unreal Engine, you can always find devs, that's why CD Projekt Red made (or is making) the switch for example.

[–] AChiTenshi@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Even with Unreal Engine studios will build custom systems and tools for it. So you still lose a bunch of knowledge.

[–] 777Prawn@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I think players got hyped for the beta and then the game was no good; classic beta and switch.

No surprise from scum EA. Sad for these people's jobs though.

[–] ViscloReader@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck this guy

[–] VirtuePacket@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 weeks ago

EA and Ubisoft are on my blacklist. I will never purchase another game published by them ever again. And haven't for years.

Nothing of value lost.

[–] UselessAsshole@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

EA has sucked terribly for at least 30 years running. I ragequit EA after they bought the James Bond franchise immediately after goldeneye and made "the world is not enough (money)".

[–] Radical_Socialist_t00t@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

Isn't capitalism great? Aren't you thankful devs?

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Lol, visit the EA BF6 forums. That’ll tell a different story. Plus they probably count player numbers on “free weekends”, too. Nothing but a crapload of cheats showing up on free days and making new accounts a week later, a common complaint in the forums along with menu problems, weapon balance issues, and people abusing aim assist with devices like the Cronus. It’s a dumb stat-padder laden arcade shooter now. Honestly the worst player experience in the BF series, and I owned/played them all.

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Shareholders don’t care about forums, they don’t care about critical reception, they care about money and unfortunately, for some fucking reason, people keep spending money on that stupid fucking series.

Of course, we’re only about t-3 years until we get the “was Battlefield 6 an underrated classic?” articles and videos start getting made.

Probably the most masochist fanbase out there. Series hasn’t been good since at least 2 but they keep coming back for more..

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

Shareholders could have more money, by cutting CEO bonuses.

[–] man_wtfhappenedtoyou@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why would anyone wanna be a game dev anymore? Maybe someone should start a union for those guys.

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Game dev isn't bad to get into. Working for those companies is the problem. It's why we see the rise of small studios and independent projects.

[–] Kurtismayfield@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

People bought BF 6?? After the last few games??

[–] Codilingus@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I did, no regrets. It's a good ol' blasty blast.

I did the beta tests and it was obvious it had a solid foundation to be one of the most fun BF games in the franchise.

Keeping up with the patch notes, they're doing a decent job fixing problems and listening to large concerns.

For reference I bought 2042 on sale for like $20 and for the most part that wasn't even worth it. And I also think BF5 wasn't worth it either.

[–] dogs0n@sh.itjust.works -4 points 2 weeks ago

You don't make any sense

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 4 points 2 weeks ago

Whew, I was worried that Andrew Wilson and company wouldn't get bonuses this year. Thank god, all those plebs got fired. /s

[–] Philharmonic3@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Dear Luigi, Saint of righteous comeuppance, hear our prayer. Let Andrew Wilson get what he deserves. Amen.

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Is that Robbie Rotten?

[–] fraksken@infosec.pub 2 points 2 weeks ago

Utter bastards! Decision makers should be fined and jailed.

[–] SkabySkalywag@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Oh shit. Before reading the article I saw the dude's face and thought "Oh shit, that's that Vernacular? Clavicular? That looks maxing douche bag."

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 2 points 2 weeks ago

Why is privacy bad for devs again?

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No one needs that much money.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

It hasn't been about need for a long time.
