To know enough about copyright to be concerned about it using a character IP in your works but to know so little about it as to think maybe SpongeBob has entered the public domain by now is a very very narrow subsection of people.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

1999, it's been around for longer than a lot of people's lives.

[–] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

Don't say 1999 like that is ancient. Also, there's only like 30 people that were alive when most things finally entering the public domain came out. If anyone over the age of 7 thinks that Steamboat Willie and SpongeBob are remotely comparable in age, they have no sense at all.

[–] MyVeryRealName@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

To be pedantic, I can see an 8 year old thinking that.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 129 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

It's still a silly question because who would even think SpongeBob would be close to public domain anyway. It's the lifetime of the creator plus 70 years. Were no where close to this ever happening and the only stuff we are even seeing now are crazy old.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 80 points 1 day ago (2 children)

“public domain” sounds naughty, too, though

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 76 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The next time my best friend calls me a slut (fairly common occurrence), I'll be informing him that I am Public Domain.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 51 points 1 day ago

OpenOrifice

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You're just licensed under the GNU General Public License, it's not your fault you get passed around!

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 5 points 22 hours ago

MIT so you're not transmitting anything.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 30 points 1 day ago

Even "fair use" is on the borderline.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 35 points 1 day ago

If not free use, why all the holes?

[–] spacegoat@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Nubile twink opens all his holes

[–] JustTheWind@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Is SpongeBob freeuse? Link him the MeatCanyon video. You know the one.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 43 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Stop shaming the rest of us for not knowing your kinks.

Let us be vanilla as fuck in peace.

[–] Squirrelanna@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 11 hours ago

I didn't see much shaming going on, just confusion.

[–] TwistedTurtle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But my kink is sharing my kinks. Stop kink shaming.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I didn’t give consent to be a part of your kink

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

You’re the one calling yourself an “object” …

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

No, it’s a verb! Like I object!

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Nobody who's not looking for a licking calls themselves vanilla imo. 👅🍦

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yet you knew that "freeuse" can refer to a kink. A vanilla person would have assumed they were talking about copyright.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

He knows it now

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 22 points 1 day ago (3 children)

What is misleading about this. Someone spell it out for me.

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 48 points 1 day ago

anyways, freeuse is kinda what it says on the tin. "Free" to "use" the person wherever, whenever. if they're relaxig in bed, while they are doing the dishes, outside gardening the plants,, while asleep. Usually has some overlap with the ignoring kink where they try to just go about their day and pretend they aren't being railed ruthlessly.

[–] banause@feddit.org 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Free use is a kink. And "old enough" is like they are asking whether they can expand rule 34.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Neither are the 500 year old dragons that look like human children. And yet

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

That would make weird for the 500 year old dragons that look like children. They're clearly violating the "half your age plus seven" rule, when they're having sex with 45 year old overweight and balding Japanese businessmen in all those hentai manga.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Right, and therefore those aren't and could never be free-use lol

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

And yet the dragons are free-use in every fanfiction I've ever written? And they love it, by the way. I write mostly Star Trek stuff.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you usually have to clarify that you're not talking about copyright law? lol

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think it's generally understood that Picard Breeds the Free Use Dragon Brood and similar works are protected under Fair Use.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, absolutely! Just like how if someone asked if an IP was free use in a public space you wouldn't assume they're referring to kink culture.

Because they're 500 year old dragons, or because they look like children?

[–] some_random_nick@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Freeuse is a porn category

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 29 points 1 day ago

I mean it only sounds nasty if you’re a fucking degen. But with that many holes, it’s still a question worth asking.

Reminder that Steamboat Willie (1928) was scheduled to enter public domain in 1986 (or 1955 if not renewed)

[–] davetortoise@reddthat.com 9 points 1 day ago (4 children)

AI slop. Look at the names

[–] vantablack@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

ugh fuck

this exchange is so funny. i wanted to repost it to my mastodon instance. but i'm not reposting fucking AI slop. we have rules against that

what the fuck was even the point of bothering to mangle this image in that way? how is feeding it through an LLM somehow EASIER than drawing black squares in MS paint? it didn't need censored in the first place! who the fuck cares!!!

fuck! i fucking hate this shit

[–] fracture@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

https://imgh.in/host/8si6pj

gotchu, i also wanted to share it lol

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The post is real. I think they Ai slop was just a weird censorship technique.

Now, whether or not the users on Reddit are bots getting freaky on main is a different question altogether...

[–] AliOski@feddit.nl 1 points 21 hours ago

Interesting

[–] originaltnavn@lemmy.zip 29 points 1 day ago

This mostly looks like the AI-powered remove/redact tool in preview on macos. It is actually quite good when used correctly, I have good experience blurring screens in photos with it.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Every fucking post someone has to chime in.

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Is it misleading though? He didn't say what kind of movie it was going to be.

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

He's got enough holes for everyone
