LOL! Kudos to President Zelensky. I do not know how he can hold his composure while sitting near a fucking Russian asset.

[–] pluggerslugs@piefed.social 4 points 1 hour ago

I don't see why not, once the tanks roll in to reclaim Muscovy for the new Kievan Rus'

[–] laurenceOfSuburbia@lemmy.world -5 points 26 minutes ago* (last edited 26 minutes ago)

Haha. What happened to 50% of Ukraine population funny clown man? Was it worth it?

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 47 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Fucking legend. More proof of my theory that comedians should govern.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 1 points 12 minutes ago

The USA should resurect John Belushi.

[–] abc@suppo.fi 36 points 6 hours ago

Also treating every talk with Trump like it was a standup show is a great way to deal with the dumbass.

[–] itrealgood@mander.xyz 51 points 8 hours ago

This quote is going to be in all the texts regarding the Russian invasion

[–] 3rl1k@lemmy.zip 26 points 7 hours ago

Lol, what a great line!

[–] FergleFFergleson@infosec.pub 170 points 10 hours ago (4 children)

That moment you're reminded that, oh yeah, this guy was a comedian back in simpler times.

[–] abc@suppo.fi 10 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

I imagine he had to unlearn the Biden years when he was dealing with actual world leaders. He clearly went in that mode to the first Trump meetings which didn't quite work.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 12 points 6 hours ago

His face says "why do I have to sit here and listen to this raving lunatic"

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 90 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Its not even his comedic acting background.

Zelenskyy has charisma. Contrast that with a senile lunatic who almost definitely had shit his pants by this point in the interview and...

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 16 points 6 hours ago (3 children)

Trump is crazy charismatic; that’s a big part of the problem. I don’t get it, but clearly tens of millions of people do, a whole fucking lot.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 hour ago

Other people are disagreeing, since he's not really smooth the way the term implies. But, maybe he has a different kind. Charisma is hard to define.

Trumpism predated Trump, though. He was just the first rich guy willing to openly say horrible things in the primary.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 14 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

He REALLY isn't. He can barely speak a coherent sentence and somehow the party of homophobia is cool with a guy who can only dance by miming a blowbang.

There are two big keys to his success and they are true of many populist leaders:

  1. His support base know they are as dumb as he is, if not dumber, and are glad they have a leader who won't use big words like "because".
  2. The vast majority of people never see him. They see a highly edited clip on tiktok or just hear that he said they should beat a trans person on Facebook and so forth.

Contrast that with someone like Big Daddy Z. "I would love to visit but we are too busy destroying it" really isn't anything new and there are countless quotes along those lines from WW2 and the like. But he has basic people skills, a great smile, and knows how to sound like a human being where "I might not always agree with you but I would totally share a drink". And it works. It belittles the opposition, reminds people of Ukraine's current accomplishments, and makes you like the guy.

That is charisma.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 51 minutes ago)

They’re both charismatic and if you can’t see that you aren’t equipped to confront reality and the problems we face.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It isn't charisma, it is convenience. The convenience to be an asshole without repercussion, is what Trump promises. His backers want to become Trump.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

No my dude. It’s charisma. It’s PerΓ³n and Putin and Bonaparte. It’s not the same charisma as Obama or Mamdani, but it’s charisma nonetheless.

[–] outerspace@lemmy.zip 2 points 15 minutes ago* (last edited 14 minutes ago)

Charisma at home.

Charisma for dummies.

Is this charisma? πŸ¦‹

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 3 points 7 hours ago

I reckon there's correlation there, but causation is inverse of what the the parent comment suggested:

He was a pretty good (from what I've seen) comedian because he was charismatic, not charismatic because he was a comedian

Of course I personally still can't get over the penis piano playing lmao. I wish more countries had the balls to vote for someone like that.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 46 points 10 hours ago

He had some side splitters in his interview with Letterman as well, you know someone's witty as fuck when they can make jokes not in their native language

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 63 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Once again I would like to apologize to President Zelenskyy on behalf of the 49% of my fellow voters who decided a corrupt, incompetent, demented rapist was a great idea.

Thank you for being able to roll with it while we get our #%@ s**t together.

Progressives, can you meet me on camera 3?

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

β…” of eligible US voters chose their current federal representation.

β…“ actively. β…“ passively.

It was an indisputable majority who chose this outcome. If the US wants to argue this is not who they are, then its citizenry needs to prove it.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Although, history has shown every nation isn't that far from signing up from fascism.

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 1 points 29 minutes ago

That’s just the population revealing who they truly are.

Weak communities are required for authoritarianism.

[–] desmosthenes@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

con artists be conning :/

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 71 points 10 hours ago (3 children)
[–] lurch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago

Yeah, just a joke. Unless...

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 5 points 6 hours ago

He started out as a decent comedian

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 21 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

I'm not even sure it was a joke. Didn't look like he was kidding at all.

In the words of Jeff Foxworthy, "true stuff is the funniest stuff."

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 51 points 9 hours ago (15 children)

Dry humour at its best. Delivery is king in comedy.

When did he say this? Is this real?

edit: Damn you're quick, 26 minutes ago

Donald Trump says he has pushed back on requests from Vladimir Putin to hold potential peace talks in Moscow.

"One of the things that I talked to [Putin] about was, where would you want to meet? And he said, ideally in Moscow," Trump said, adding that he rejected the idea as it "just doesn't work".

"But he'll meet and Zelenskyy is going to meet and something's going to happen," says Trump. "It's going to be positive."

The US president adds that he hopes a meeting with the two sides will happen "soon".

He then turns to Zelenskyy and asks: "Would you go to Moscow?"

"It's difficult, there's a lot of Ukrainian drones there," Zelenskyy jokes, to laughter from those in the room.

Ooooh, thanks. I thought going to Moscow meant trying to invade it... But this makes more sense.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 22 points 10 hours ago (3 children)

The cool thing about drones is they only hit enemies. Usually.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 1 points 32 minutes ago

A US destroyer in WW2 accidentally fired a torpedo and nearly hit the ship that Franklin D. Roosevelt was on.

Unlike certain air defense systems.

[Kuwaiti national anthem plays]

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 14 points 9 hours ago

Well Ukrainian drones at least.

I'd visit the flat sheet of glass that will be where Moscow is but only briefly due to exposure limits.
